What do you do for WoW Insider?

I am very happy to say that I’ve been working at WoW Insider for a while now, though what I do here has [hide]changed over the years[/hide]. Currently, I am one of the [hide]Drama Mamas[/hide], along with Lisa Poisso. I also adventure according to your whim every week on [hide]Choose My Adventure Live[/hide]. And I am GM of the [hide]It came from the Blog[/hide] family of guilds, which includes organizing monthly events like the [hide]haunting of Stormwind[/hide]. One of my favorite non-column-related posts I wrote a couple of years ago is my [hide]interview with a scammer[/hide]. My previous [hide]About the Bloggers post from 2008[/hide] describes what I’ve done here in the past and also includes a picture of me in the back of a pickup truck fondling Tarzan — if you’re into that kind of thing.[hide]Continue reading About the Bloggers: Robin Torres[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide][hide]About the Bloggers: Robin Torres[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. Know Your Lore: Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Azeroth (part 1)

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Anduin Lothar made the supreme sacrifice for his people. He lived for them, and he died for them, at the end of a long life dedicated to their welfare. He lived his entire life in the saddle, riding from adventure to duty, fighting first for himself and then for everyone he loved. Last of a bloodline that could claim to be the kings of all humanity, Lothar died not as a king but as a soldier fighting to save his world from those who had willingly sold their souls, their children’s lives, and their world to the bloodlust of demons. In life, he had repeatedly balked their victory. In death, he secured his people’s future.

There will never be a warrior as great as Lothar. No one, no man, no orc, no one can ever exceed his accomplishment. Uncompromising, he brought forth a compromise that welded together disparate races in a union to defend themselves and their world. Stern, he managed to nurture a band of heroes who would stride forth with his name on their lips and his example in their hearts to plant it as a standard on a foreign world. Aged and weary, he carried his best friend’s nation and his best friend’s treasured son to safety and brought both through the terrible storm to be returned to their rightful home.

Without Lothar, there would be no humanity left. Without Lothar, orc slaves to the Burning Legion would have destroyed all of the Eastern Kingdoms and, in thrall to their demon masters, laid waste to a second world. Without Lothar, everything changes. This is the life of the Lion of Azeroth.[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Azeroth (part 1)[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Azeroth (part 1)[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. Spiritual Guidance: A shadow priest’s guide to Alysrazor

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Spiritual Guidance[/hide] for [hide]discipline[/hide], [hide]holy[/hide] and [hide]shadow[/hide] priests. On Wednesdays, shadow priesting expert [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide]’s steals all your feathers to become a soaring blur of purple. Fox encourages all potential prey to [hide]follow him on Twitter[/hide].

Last week, I talked about the gimmickry involved in the Lord Rhyolith fight. It’s interesting and unique, but for us shadow priests, largely irrelevant. If only there were a fight with a super-cool gimmick that puts shadow priests on center stage and …

… oh, wait, there totally is a fight like that: [hide]Alysrazor[/hide]!

The fight against Alysrazor is absolutely hectic, but in a fun way. Shadow priests get a stacking haste buff that will have you frantically mashing keys to maximize your DPS. We get a crit buff that guarantees near 100% Shadowfiend uptime. And, oh yeah — we friggin’ fly through the air.

That’s right, Alysrazor is all about the z-axis. It’s time to go grab your Super Nintendo out of the attic, shadow priests, because it’s about to get all Pilotwings up in here.[hide]Continue reading Spiritual Guidance: A shadow priest’s guide to Alysrazor[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Priest[/hide], [hide](Priest) Spiritual Guidance[/hide][hide]Spiritual Guidance: A shadow priest’s guide to Alysrazor[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. The Daily Quest: Learning step-by-step

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

I’m done with the Molten Front — finished all the dailies, got the hippogryph, finally got the title the other night after finishing the last achievement I needed, and managed to snag the [hide]Searing Scorchling[/hide] pet while I was at it. Now that I’m done with all that nonsense, I suppose I should resume work on archaeology, the profession in which you supposedly learn things about history. So far, the only thing I’ve learned has been that archaeology is incredibly boring. But I suppose if I want those pets, I better suck it up!

Today we’ve got a collection of posts from around the blogosphere concerning the subject of learning.

[hide]Bible of Dreams[/hide] teaches us about getting organized to create [hide]positive guild environments[/hide].

[hide]Oh My, Kurenai![/hide] teaches us about learning to resto — and to [hide]level as a healer[/hide].

[hide]Holy Word: Delicious[/hide] teaches us about the fine art of [hide]raid leading[/hide].

[hide]Root and Branch[/hide] has some radical teaching methods to get people to learn that [hide]fire is bad and will hurt you[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

Patch 4.2.2 on test realms could signal patch 4.3 soon

Intrepid dataminers over at [hide]MMO-Champion[/hide] have spelled out the changes made recently to the public test realms (PTR). This update solidifies all the changes made in recent bug fixes. It could also signal the ramping up of more PTR action as patch 4.3 heats up for prime time testing.

Currently, the PTR is up to patch 4.2.2, so no new content is up, but the realms are now updated with the hotfixes and bug fixes that the servers have already received. Most of the changes listed are tool tip changes that are already live on the servers but might not have been reflected on the PTR while it was in a dormant state. Hopefully this means that after a round of clean up and bug fixes on the PTR we’ll get some news about patch 4.3 and the wonders that await.

What does patch 4.3 hold for the future of World of Warcraft? Well, we don’t know yet. It could be new 5-mans, the [hide]War of the Ancients[/hide] raid promised at BlizzCon, or new daily content not unlike the [hide]Molten Front[/hide]. We could even see a tier of raiding pitting players against Deathwing himself soon.

While the code strings are nothing new, it might signal that the [hide]guild transfer service[/hide] is in the pipe as we speak, and hopefully will have more information on this service for patch 4.3. While the strings are focused on naming violations, I can still dream, right? I want to believe! We will find out in time. Read the full list of changes after the break.[hide]Continue reading Patch 4.2.2 on test realms could signal patch 4.3 soon[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Hotfixes[/hide][hide]Patch 4.2.2 on test realms could signal patch 4.3 soon[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. Reader UI of the Week: Working with non-widescreen monitors

[hide][/hide]
Each week, WoW Insider and [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] bring you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which spotlights the latest user interface addons. Have a screenshot of your own UI that you’d like to submit? Send your screenshots along with info on what mods you’re using to [hide]readerui@wowinsider.com[/hide], and [hide]follow Mathew[/hide] on Twitter.

Another day, another call for help from a community member in need. What are we to do, ladies and gents? Not help out this poor soul? Stand idly by when one of our own is in need? No. That’s not what we do. We are a loving and caring bunch, a proud and patient people, who take in those downtrodden and emerge with happiness and love in our hearts. Or whatever.

Lellee is asking for help. With a non-widescreen monitor and certain UI principles set in stone, we have our work cut out for us. But using solid UI-building tactics and moving out of comfort zones, I think we have the ability to turn this UI into something more akin to the solid and suave-looking examples that this column has showcased before. It just takes time, patience, and a little bit of planning. At this point, it isn’t even the addons — it’s all about what you do with them. Read on, champions![hide]Continue reading Reader UI of the Week: Working with non-widescreen monitors[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Add-Ons[/hide], [hide]Reader UI of the Week[/hide][hide]Reader UI of the Week: Working with non-widescreen monitors[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. Jaina Proudmoore working book title: Tides of War

We have learned from author [hide]Christie Golden’s[/hide] Facebook page that the working title of her newest World of Warcraft novel, which will focus on earth-shattering changes for fan favorite [hide]Jaina Proudmoore[/hide], could be titled Tides of War. Since Jaina’s heritage and background (her father being [hide]Admiral Daelin Proudmoore[/hide], leader of Kul Tiras) is that of Kul Tiras, the island nation of seafaring humans, this title makes sense, especially if it heralds the return of the nation of Kul Tiras back to World of Warcraft.

Christie posts: «Okay, starting on Tides of War, the Jaina (Proudmoore!) book. Am thinking if I work this right… I won’t have to work weekends this time. Woot!»

There is a lot of speculation going on about the next expansion, including the [hide]filing of a trademark [/hide]for Mists of Pandaria, as well as Chris Metzen [hide]revealing the earth-shattering Jaina book[/hide] at Comic Con last month. While Tides of War is admittedly a working title, it signals a strong naval theme that links up well with an island expansion, the island of Pandaria, and a generally water-y world we’re looking at. This is all still speculation, of course.

Lichborne: 3 quick tips to step up your death knight’s game

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide] Lichborne[/hide] for [hide]blood[/hide], [hide]frost[/hide], and [hide] unholy[/hide] death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let’s show the other classes how a hero class gets things done.

So you know your rotations. You know your gear priorities. You know what to reforge, which buttons to hit, and how to stay out of the fire. These are all good things. Yet still, you feel like you’re missing something. Maybe you feel like you could crank out another 1-2k DPS on some fights. Maybe you feel like your health keeps dropping a little low when you tank.

Sometimes, the problem with problems like these is that it’s not a big glaring thing you’re forgetting (nor is it forgetting to drop your favorite lucky vanity item). Sometimes, it’s just that you need to tighten up your play just a little bit. This week, we’re going to take a look at a few simple tricks that hopefully a lot of you can use just to shore up your play and go the extra mile.[hide]Continue reading Lichborne: 3 quick tips to step up your death knight’s game[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Death Knight[/hide], [hide](Death Knight) Lichborne[/hide][hide]Lichborne: 3 quick tips to step up your death knight’s game[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. Blood Sport: Having fun in the arena

Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? [hide]C. Christian Moore[/hide], multiple rank 1 [hide]Gladiator[/hide], examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more in [hide]Blood Sport[/hide].

My internet is down this week (lame!), so I’ll be writing about a topic near to my heart: having fun in the arena. I was originally going to write about how to make the best use of your time in WoW when you don’t have much of it, but then I thought two things:

Everyone spends time in game differently. Some people like PVE, some PVP, some prefer the auction house, and others (mindbogglingly) enjoy reputation grinding. For me to throw out a list of how to best use your time would be madness, absolute madness.

Considering we are WoW players, making the best use of your time might not be the most well-received article.

What’s a dictator to do when his third-world economy is wheezing along on its last legs? Hack some video games, of course!
