Addon Spotlight: A very mailbag episode

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

Oh, hi. There have been so many mailbag questions lately that it might be a good idea to just, you know, get them all out of the way in one shot. You guys love sending me in questions! If you’ve got a question for Addon Spotlight, send it on over to [hide]mat@wowinsider.com[/hide] and hopefully I can get to your question. There will be addon recommendations. There will be heartbreak and sadness. There will be reunions and jubilation. So many emotions are running through me right now.

A mighty burden

Hey Mat,

I know you dislike Carbonite, and it took me a long time to understand why, but I get it now. It’s huge and slows down my computer, and they don’t make their code easy for other addon authors to use. I’ve decided to not use it anymore, but there are a few things I really, really miss about it! Top on the list is the infinite scroll and sizing of the map and its google earth type layer. I also really liked being able to right click the map to place a «go to» waypoint. Finally, I miss the «Punks» feature that alerts me when an enemy player is nearby and also puts a dot on the minimap with the player’s approximate location and time last seen. Everything else it does that I like I’ve found replacement addons to use, and I like that I’m using less memory than with Carbonite. I’m also having a lot fewer conflicts with my other mods. Are there any addons out there that can give me back the three features outlined above? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Ann
Thanks for the email, Ann. Carbonite is one of those addons that has its heart in the right place but overstays its welcome very quickly, like relatives in your living room or that raider who holds down his push-to-talk button constantly. The bloat you feel with Carbonite is heavy, it’s true. All of the features that you describe, like the map scaling and that Google Earth layer, are the ones causing you the bloat and slowness. That’s the problem.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: A very mailbag episode[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Add-Ons[/hide], [hide]AddOn Spotlight[/hide][hide]Addon Spotlight: A very mailbag episode[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. Zarhym muses about 15-man raids

Recently, a player on the official forums asked about the potential for 15-man raids in World of Warcraft. [hide]Zarhym responded to the post[/hide], stating that he believes that 15-man raiding numbers are a «pretty optimal number of raiders» since class representation is easier to deal with. However, there is no plan in the near future for Blizzard to implement three different raid sizes in the near future, which most likely means 10- and 25-man raiding is here to stay. But what if we lived in a world of 15-man raiding?

There are many benefits to 15-man raids that work around the scaling problems of 25-mans and the tuning issues of 10-mans. The big issues with 25-man raids include scaling and filling out the roster. Many guilds cannot field 25 people for their weekly raid and usually have to resort to pugging a few stragglers who aren’t in tune with the group. Other guilds who cannot field 25 players choose to do two 10-man raids, but the issue of group composition takes center stage; where two 10-mans require a total of four tanks and five to six healers, the 25-man requires two tanks and six to eight healers. You can get a nasty split if you don’t have just the right number of specific classes.[hide]Continue reading Zarhym muses about 15-man raids[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Blizzard[/hide][hide]Zarhym muses about 15-man raids[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. Scattered Shots: Marksmanship hunter scaling

Every Thursday, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Scattered Shots[/hide] for [hide]beast mastery[/hide], [hide]marksmanship[/hide] and [hide]survival[/hide] hunters. Frostheim of [hide]Warcraft Hunters Union[/hide] uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to [hide]Frostheim[/hide].

WoW is a game with a lot of different moving parts that is deliberately designed so that different classes and different specs benefit differently from various stats and spells. One complex side effect of this is that different classes and specs can actually scale differently, growing in power at different rates even with the same gear increases.

For example, compare death knights and hunters from tier 11 to tier 12. A death knight going up an entire tier of gear is still ugly as sin and gained only the tiniest amount of good looks from the upgrades; meanwhile, hunters are exponentially more attractive (and hunters were pretty amazingly good-looking to start with).

Within the hunter class, scaling is most often cited with respect to the marksmanship hunter spec. MM hunters get far more benefit from their ranged weapon DPS than other hunter specs, and the complaint goes that MM will continue to grow further and further ahead of the other specs’ DPS as gear progresses because of this scaling discrepancy.

Join me after the cut today as we tackle the issue of MM scaling and examine the theory and then see what’s really happening as we improve our gear.[hide]Continue reading Scattered Shots: Marksmanship hunter scaling[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Hunter[/hide], [hide](Hunter) Scattered Shots[/hide][hide]Scattered Shots: Marksmanship hunter scaling[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. WoW Rookie: How to deal with disruptive players and hate speech

I received this letter from a reader last week. It made me stupid-happy but also incredibly sad. You’ll see why immediately, I think:

My 9 year old has medical conditions that keep him from having many friends or going outside to play. He has to be homeschooled. For entertainment and to give him a feeling of exploration and adventure, we play warcraft. Other people can be very cruel in real life, so warcraft is a nice escape from that.

But wow has gotten nearly as bad. you can’t hardly be in Tol Barad or Orgrimmar without hearing «ni$&@!,» ‘$#%,» and other hateful language. using the LFD tool is just as bad if not worse. My son plays a prot paladin/holy paladin so that any group he gets in will have a healer or a tank as needed. But the number of «fag elf» accusations we’ve seen in LFD is discouraging.

I’m not even counting «noob» and «you suck» in all this.

We’re really thinking about moving on if things don’t get better. What can we do about this?

hope you can help,

a mom

You can see the happy and the sad in that — happy that our beloved game can help a family; sad that we as players can have such a negative impact. My initial reaction was to hope this was being blown out of proportion. After all, I tend to get riled about slurs and hate speech myself and do so very quickly. Maybe A Mom was being oversensitive?

While it’s fair to say maybe [hide]kids shouldn’t be[/hide] in the game, families absolutely have a reasonable expectation that they can play together.[hide]Continue reading WoW Rookie: How to deal with disruptive players and hate speech[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]WoW Rookie: How to deal with disruptive players and hate speech[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 20:00:00 EST. How do you balance game and family?

This post has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

No matter your walk of life, we all have time management challenges. Within that spectrum, there are the most fortunate who have personal assistants to manage their next nose hair removal appointment, to those dealing with significant life-and-death issues that none of us would ever want to contemplate. However, within the WoW community, there is a sizeable portion of us who are full-time working parents. Gone are my early college days (early ’90s, egad!) when I used to slack off and play MUDs ([hide]Valhalla[/hide], anyone?) all night long without a care in the world … I could always blow off a class or two and still pass.

With kids, it’s a completely different ballgame. Not only do young children demand your attention after you get home from a long day at work, it’s your responsibility to spend quality time with them. Make them a healthy dinner, read books with them, play games, go outside for a walk, give them a bath, watch a ballgame with them. These are precious moments that I savor. However, this added responsibility can add a lot of stress. It’s therapeutic to expunge it when we actually have a free moment. Gaming is one of my releases. I feel fortunate that I can actually squeeze in two raiding nights a week, but that’s it for me. With raiding, there is a schedule that my wife and family are comfortable with. It’s how I choose to prioritize my WoW goals. I can’t run heroics. Dailies, yeah, right — it’s either bath time, a tee ball game, or we need to rush our toddler to the doctor because his diaper is full of purple poo. Stay out of the purple poo, BTW.

As a parent, how do you prioritize in-game goals?

Patch 4.2.0 hotfixes for Aug. 10, 2011

Blizzard has released some new hotflixes this evening, and they’re nice and steamy. Expect to see them on live servers tonight; although sometimes the servers have to be reset before the changes take hold.

Chief amongst them are:

If a player is kicked by vote from a dungeon finder group, the leader of the group is no longer able to invite that player back.

Several creatures in the Firelands are no longer susceptible to snares or other immobilizing effects.

Eternal Embers are now epic quality.

Heirloom items can be once again linked in chat.

The full list of today’s hotfixes are as follows:

Classes

Death Knights

Applicable death knight abilities are now using the correct amount of resources (and putting them on cooldown) when there are 4 Death Runes available and the Unholy Runes are depleted.

Druids

Druids that shapeshift will now clear the Potion of Illusion buff.

Mages

Combustion damage from Ignite is no longer penalized by Resilience more than once, nor can it gain double benefit from Flashburn (mastery).

Dungeons & Raids

Dungeon Finder

If a player is kicked by vote from a dungeon finder group, the leader of the group is no longer able to invite that player back.

Firelands

Rogue Smoke Bombs cannot prevent the spawning of Magma Traps during the fight against Ragnaros.

Several creatures in the Firelands are no longer susceptible to snares or other immobilizing effects.

Unbound Pyrelords, Unbound Smoldering Elementals, Unbound Blazing Elementals, and Patriarch Fire Turtles now drop silver instead of gold.

Guilds

The Recently Mass Resurrected debuff is correctly being applied to players who are in the process of logging out of the game.

Items

Brawler’s Trophy and Core of Ripeness cannot be active at the same time as each other, or other burst trinkets.

Eternal Embers are now epic quality.

Heirloom items can once again be linked in chat.

Creating a macro to use the Runestaff of Nordrassil multiple times will only trigger the use once.

Quests & Creatures

Hyjal Regrowth & Molten Front

The Burning Treants summoned by the Druid of the Flame now disappear when the summoner is captured.

3 different elementals spawn on any given day for the Death From Above achievement, up from 1.
