Around Azeroth: Don’t fear the reaper

[hide][/hide]
Well, I’m not exactly sure what’s going on here. I think it’s the nightmare vision you have if you fall asleep face down in a strawberry daiquiri. The translucent spirit of [hide]Kerrowyn[/hide] of [hide]ExtendedCredit[/hide] on Azuremyst (US-A) looks like she was about to reap the soul of the corpse on the right but was moved by the deceased’s heartfelt dramatic speech and decided to spare her.

The Queue: Undertow

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley will be your host today.

From Sacco, for whom I’m covering The Queue today:

Here’s our last weekend music recommendation. I saw Warpaint at the Hollywood Bowl with the Smith Westerns, Panda Bear, Arctic Monkeys, and TV on the Radio a week or two ago. Undertow’s bassist is sister to Shannyn Sossamon, who you may remember from such films as A Knight’s Tale. Shannyn also used to be in the band!

Enough with these music shenanigans, Sacco. It’s on to shameless plugs and cross-branding. If you haven’t seen the [hide]Legendary show[/hide] on [hide]Gamebreaker.tv[/hide], you should check it out because I like Legendary and totally got to cohost [hide]this week’s episode[/hide]. So, as loyal Mat McCurley fans, you should check it out.

Busterzx asked:

Have they announced what raids will be available through the Raid Finder? Also, will the amount of trash in some raids be reduced to speed things up for the average pug?

Only the Dragon Soul raid will be available in the Raid Finder at launch, with the prospect of more dungeons being added. Since Raid Finder is a totally new difficulty level than normal or heroic, the raid sort of has to be back-tuned or the mechanics of some fights even completely changed in order to facilitate easy groupage. Blizzard has said that over time more could be added but that it wants to keep the Raid Finder featuring current content.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Undertow[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Undertow[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 02 Oct 2011 12:00:00 EST. Know Your Lore: NPC evolution from Wrath to Cataclysm and beyond

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Wrath of the Lich King saw the introduction of several elements that furthered the incorporation of lore into the game. Phased quest chains allowed players to actually see their effect on the zones. Cinematic cutscenes made it feel like you were playing through a movie. The faction leaders of the world were suddenly far more active than they’d ever been before. But those were the major, blowout moments that made the storytelling work. What most didn’t quite recognize were the subtle efforts of the lowly NPC.

In classic WoW, players literally had to walk up to NPCs and speak to them to engage them in conversation. In The Burning Crusade, that changed slightly — NPCs now recognized players as they walked by, according to their reputation. In Wrath, suddenly NPCs were not only recognizing players, but they were whispering players, recognizing players. Prior efforts by a player were acknowledged, even if it was just a simple «I remember you.»

What Wrath of the Lich King began was a revolution in WoW gameplay that would spin into full-out overdrive with the launch of Cataclysm. The lowly NPC was no longer an unimportant figure; he was a comrade in arms, a fellow hero, or a taskmaster — and he made certain to let you know it.[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: NPC evolution from Wrath to Cataclysm and beyond[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: NPC evolution from Wrath to Cataclysm and beyond[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 02 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: Radical changes to holy paladins on the 4.3 PTR

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Every Sunday, [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

When I first checked out the [hide]official PTR change list[/hide] for the upcoming patch 4.3, I wasn’t expecting many holy paladin changes. We’ve been performing admirably in Cataclysm, comfortably straddling the line between obsolescence and ubiquity. Upon the reading the changes, I was shocked to see such radical changes to our talents, spells, and playstyle. Patch notes like these are always scary, as we don’t know if we’re being gutted or reinforced. I immediately downloaded the latest PTR client and got to work.

[hide]

Holy Radiance[/hide] was completely retooled into a cast spell that we use on a friendly group member, with talents changed to reflect the new design. We gained two new holy power sources, and [hide]Light of Dawn[/hide] had its target count shifted. Our bread-and-butter mana regeneration mechanic, the [hide]Seal of Insight[/hide] and [hide]Judgement[/hide] system, was also scrapped in favor of a flat regeneration buff that scales with our spirit.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: Radical changes to holy paladins on the 4.3 PTR[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: Radical changes to holy paladins on the 4.3 PTR[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 02 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST. Ready Check: Looking into roll-based loot systems

[hide]Ready Check[/hide] helps you prepare yourself and your raid for the bosses that simply require killing. Check back with Ready Check each week for the latest pointers on killing adds, not standing in fire, and hoping for loot that won’t drop.

Greetings once again, raiders. While the rest of the writers are off in their lofty towers of 4.3 land, I am stuck here in the trenches of reality. Fret not, we’ll soon be climbing out of this foxhole that we’ve found ourself in, but the time is not quite right. I promise you though, when next we hit 4.3 content with our feet running, it is going to be an epic adventure that you won’t want to miss. In the meantime, it’s back to the discussion on loot systems. Gear, after all, doesn’t distribute itself.

Last week, we talked about various DKP systems and the advantages or disadvantages that they hold. While DKP is a fairly common system that you’ll probably see in most guilds, it isn’t the only popular choice. This week, we’ll be taking a look into roll-based loot systems and how they too can be an effective method for distributing purples.[hide]Continue reading Ready Check: Looking into roll-based loot systems[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Ready Check (Raiding)[/hide][hide]Ready Check: Looking into roll-based loot systems[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 17:30:00 EST. WoW Insider Live Stream: More 4.3 PTR hijinks

Since y’all seemed to [hide]like it so much[/hide] (and since I like typing «y’all»), we’re streaming yet more 4.3 PTR content for you to enjoy. Thrill as [hide]Mat McCurley[/hide], [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide], [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide], [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide] (who I hear tell will be shirtless) and [hide]some other guy[/hide] run dungeons on the PTR and comment on what we’re seeing and doing. On deck are Horde and then Alliance runs of [hide]End Time[/hide] and the other dungeons, if they’re accessible.

You can watch the live stream or go to the [hide]page of streaming[/hide] to see the dungeoneering, the fashions (I’ll most likely be wearing an entirely new set for each run) and the fun of watching everyone pick on Alex.

Well, I assume we’ll be doing that. I know I will.

Edit: Show’s over, folks — thanks tons for coming out to watch and hang out. We’ll hopefully do it again as soon as the next dungeons are available. The video embed has been changed from the live stream to the recording of the event. Enjoy!

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. Review the [hide]official patch notes[/hide], and then dig into what’s ahead: new [hide]item storage options[/hide], [hide]cross-realm raiding[/hide], [hide]cosmetic armor skinning[/hide] and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from [hide]astride his back[/hide]!

The Lawbringer: Paying for addons and the spirit of the TOS

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

A long, long time ago, I can still remember the article I wrote at the beginning of my time here at WoW Insider called [hide]What happed to TourGuide[/hide]?, an article detailing the disappearance of beloved addon TourGuide and the sale of World of Warcraft leveling guides. I had questioned whether these guides went against the stated addon policies Blizzard had laid out, which expressly forbid addons for sale or paying for addon access. It was not well received in those circles.

Addons have been brought down or have had the Blizzard gaze upon them for less than being sold on a website for a nice chunk of change. Why then does this new crop of leveling guides and automatic gold making addons (which I will not be linking) get an apparent free pass? Why haven’t we seen Blizzard take action against for-pay, in-game gold automators and leveling guides? What is it inherently about the for-pay addons that makes them permissible?[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Paying for addons and the spirit of the TOS[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Paying for addons and the spirit of the TOS[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.3 news and paladin T13 bonuses

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog [hide]Righteous Defense[/hide].

The ball has begun rolling on patch 4.3, with the player test realm officially going up Tuesday night for public consumption. There isn’t terribly much of interest just yet — only the first iteration of the patch, so obviously much more is in store for us. Still, there are some interesting changes (and some glaringly absent ones) that demand discussion. Let’s dig in.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.3 news and paladin T13 bonuses[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.3 news and paladin T13 bonuses[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 20:00:00 EST. WRUP: Return to «over there»

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, «What are you playing this week?» — otherwise known as: [hide]WRUP[/hide]. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

Hello again. It’s me, [hide]Faux Van Allen[/hide]. Pull up a seat, ladies and gentlemen. It’s been a long time.

Five months ago, the blogger you know as [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide] ventured to a place you may know as [hide]over there[/hide] — a parallel universe where there’s a second version of everything, people included. The airplanes of your universe are zeppelins in ours. And the website you know as WoW Insider is known as Wow.com over here. At least, it was known as Wow.com up until last month. It’s now known as wowgame.nbci-xoom.com/warcraft. (Long story.)

Dear friends, I’m afraid we’re really in it up to here. It seems that someone — and darned if any of us can remember who — tore a permanent hole between this universe and the one over there. Since then, the WoW Insider team and the Wow.com team are in regular contact, sharing information to help bring you the latest news. But it seems that this is less than useful. They’ve never even heard of the Yellow Dragonflight. And their «death knights» as a hero class? What that hell is that? That doesn’t even make sense.

What’s really weird, though, is this bizarre yet sad flicker I keep seeing out of the corner of my eye, like there’s someone else around, someone who belongs and yet is so terribly out of place at the same time. A dangerously underweight flicker that likely needs treatment for malnutrition. It’s like the universe is trying to correct some kind of mistake that we can all agree doesn’t need correcting at all. Strangest thing.

Anyway, though we’ve seemingly got all those universe-devouring wormholes from May under control, we’ve still got issues with quantum entanglement regarding the over here and over there versions of WRUP. Don’t worry, though, we’ve got a lot of creepy, bald-headed technicians working on the issue as we speak.[hide]Continue reading WRUP: Return to «over there»[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide][hide]WRUP: Return to «over there»[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 21:00:00 EST.
