Titles Tell Stories: How «Mists of Pandaria» breaks the mold

Mists of Pandaria was [hide]filed as a trademark by Blizzard[/hide] last week, sending the WoW community into pandemonium. Love them or hate them, pandaren may be making their way to Warcraft sooner than you think. As a title, though, does Mists of Pandaria work in the same way Blizzard’s past expansion titles have informed the public about their general storylines?

While I was drafting [hide]The Queue[/hide] a few days ago, one particular vein of questioning stood out among the rest. Blizzard has recently filed for a [hide]peculiar trademark[/hide], Mists of Pandaria, under the classification of computer software (among other things). Many people believe that Mists of Pandaria will be the name of the next expansion, heralding in an age of World of Warcraft in which the fan-favorite pandaren finally make their emergence out of the shadows and into our hearts. Others hope that the pandas stay as the joke they originated from and WoW keeps only its other 50 bipedal, anthropomorphized races and rejects the pandaren concept. Either way, it is cause for discussion.

The title is an art form in the games industry. A title has to tell you everything you need to know right up front, on the box, to give players new and old alike an understanding of what the game is going to focus on, set the theme, set a tone, and even clue us in to the major plot points. The title Mists of Pandaria could or could not do those things. I’ve taken the liberty of writing up some words on the subject of this potential title. I could be right and could certainly be wrong, but here’s some food for thought.

The Queue question that got this all started for me:[hide]Continue reading Titles Tell Stories: How «Mists of Pandaria» breaks the mold[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide][hide]Titles Tell Stories: How «Mists of Pandaria» breaks the mold[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 09:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: How dare you, sir!

[hide][/hide]
«After a (nerfed) successful Al’Akir kill, Halrandir the Mad Mage indulged in a game of tag with some of his guildmates,» writes submitter [hide]Halrandir[/hide] of [hide]Midnight Cartel[/hide] on Elune (US-A). «Trying to lose his chasers, he flew out past the buildings and Blinked … and found himself floating on the other side of the boundaries of Skywall, in the airs outside the air. All his guildmates flew to join him and died swift deaths as they tried to pass the magical wall. Laughing at their plummeting bodies, Hal flew off into the sunset until the fortress disappeared far behind him. It was there he realized his error: When all you have is sunlight, starlight and the ever-changing clouds as your guides, finding one’s way anywhere, especially back to your home, is a little tricky.»

The Queue: 5,000 feet

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky, your friendly pilot, will be your host today.

Assuming everything goes as planned, when this Queue goes live, I’ll be just touching down after looking at this view — 5,000 feet above sea level in the northern part of the United States, snuggled up in a Cessna 172S learning how to fly.

Let me tell you, the Cessna goes a helluva lot faster than my drakes.

Professor Orc asked:

I remember a quest chain in the Twilight Highlands where the Red dragonflight called a hunt on the black dragonflight to completely exterminate them. During the quest chain you kill what is described as one of the last egg-laying females.

Because of this, is it lore now that the Black Dragonflight is considered destroyed, with the exception of deathwing? WoW Moviewatch: Airships

Your intrepid WoW Insider staff recently published an article on [hide]how to record game footage on a Mac[/hide]. The piece was surprisingly well-received; it turns out quite a few WoW fans would like to make their own videos, but they just weren’t sure how to make it happen.

Emmaskar was inspired to create her own video called [hide]Airships: a WoW Machinima[/hide]. It’s her very first machinima, and I think she did an amazing job. The views and shots of Azeroth in this video are beautiful, and her song selection was perfectly suited to the whimsical, thoughtful scenes. Best of all, the whole thing was put together from in-game footage.

I can’t say how exciting it is to see new people pick up the art of machinima. While we’re seeing new videos all the time, it’s critically important that new fans join the hobby. It’s the only way we can thrive as a community. Emmaskar’s work looks promising; I hope she enjoyed the experience enough to keep trying.

Interested in the wide world of [hide]machinima[/hide]? We have new movies every weekday here on [hide]WoW Moviewatch[/hide]! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at [hide]moviewatch@wowinsider.com[/hide].

WoW Archivist: The Emerald Dream, Outland, and other Z-axis secrets

The [hide]WoW Archivist[/hide] explores the secrets of World of Warcraft’s past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW’s history? What secrets does the game still hold?

This week’s edition of the Archivist will be a little different than what you may be used to seeing. Rather than exploring a specific event in World of Warcraft’s history, we’re going to look at a bit of antiquated game design. Specifically, we will be looking at one of Blizzard’s old development practices: trying to hide content development in progress on live realms.

Before I begin, I want to note that to my knowledge, none of the hidden locations outlined in this article are accessible anymore. If there are still ways of accessing them on live realms, I want to request that none of you discuss the methods of entering these places on our site. Blizzard hid these places for a reason, even if it didn’t do it very well.

Follow along for a look at the Emerald Dream, an early Outland testing ground, and other Z-axis shortcuts and secrets.[hide]Continue reading WoW Archivist: The Emerald Dream, Outland, and other Z-axis secrets[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]WoW Archivist[/hide][hide]WoW Archivist: The Emerald Dream, Outland, and other Z-axis secrets[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. Totem Talk: How to level your elemental shaman

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for [hide]elemental[/hide], [hide]enhancement[/hide], and [hide]restoration[/hide] shaman. [hide]Josh Myers[/hide] once only tackled the hard questions about enhancement but has recently expanded his sphere of responsibility to all shaman DPS specs. (And no, two-handed enhancement is still never coming back.)

With the introduction of Blizzard’s new [hide]free trial system[/hide], the number of low-level characters playing World of Warcraft has drastically risen. Whether it is established players creating alternate characters on new accounts, past players trying to decide if they want to return to the game, or persons who have never played WoW (or any video game!) before, Blizzard has made it both easy and appealing to start a new character.

At WoW Insider, we’re aware of [hide]how scary it can be[/hide] to start a character in the World of Warcraft. With tons of abilities, four equipment types, 12 races, and 10 classes with three talent trees each, WoW can be a confusing and intimidating game to start out. Fortunately, I’m going to help by alleviating some of the weight on your shoulders and help make your decision for you: roll a tauren elemental shaman. You’ll look awesome, and then you can follow this handy elemental shaman leveling guide! It’s a win/win situation.[hide]Continue reading Totem Talk: How to level your elemental shaman[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide](Shaman) Totem Talk[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Totem Talk: How to level your elemental shaman[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. Drama Mamas: How to rein in a rules lawyer

[hide]Drama Mamas[/hide] Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas — and just as we don’t want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

I have a confession to make: I’ve always loved The Carpenters. This has nothing to do with this week’s letter.

Dear Drama Mamas,

My fiancee and I run a small guild comprised of real-life friends. Though tiny and very casual, we’ve accomplished quite a bit, and personally knowing each other we are very open to assist one another, offer suggestions and take critiques. We play together almost every night, and meet several times a week to RP, play war games and TCGs usually in my fiancee and I’s apartment. This has been the routine for about 5-6 years now. As great as this is, we have a friend that «sucks» the fun out of not only in our games but WoW.[hide]Continue reading Drama Mamas: How to rein in a rules lawyer[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Drama Mamas[/hide][hide]Drama Mamas: How to rein in a rules lawyer[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST.
