Officers’ Quarters: Secret farmers of the Firelands

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes [hide]Officers’ Quarters[/hide], a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of [hide]The Guild Leader’s Handbook[/hide], available now from [hide]No Starch Press[/hide].

In the [hide]Firelands[/hide], red fire and black ash rain from the sky. Meanwhile, purple [hide]axes[/hide], [hide]scalpels[/hide], [hide]scales[/hide], mysterious [hide]apparati[/hide], and even [hide]scraps[/hide] of purple [hide]parchment[/hide] rain from its dying denizens. Another raid has brought with it the opportunity to kill scores of trash mobs for high-ilevel loot, much like players did in tier 11 with the [hide]Bastion of Twilight[/hide]’s first-room trash-athon. The purple recipes hearken back to the [hide]days of the Sunwell Plateau[/hide]. Yes, trash farming has a long and illustrious history in WoW.

With such great opportunities for both loot and gold, it’s hard to blame players for getting in there and farming away. WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] even [hide]wrote a guide[/hide] about how to do it. But should your members ask permission before they use the guild’s raid ID for such runs? This week, one guild leader found out that some members have been venturing in without telling anyone.

Hi.

The basics. I run a decently good 10-man raid guild. We have a guild-master, me, a few officers, a few semi-officers, and raiders. The semi-officers are guildmembers that are very good at their class and been in the guild for a long time. You could say very valued members or maybe classleaders and they have some areas of responsibilty in the raids and guild. We often seek their advice but they dont have decision making rights like the GM and the Officers.

The background. We killed Shannox and some other bosses the first week of Firelands, and we have done so every week up to date.

We recently learned that since the first week a few of the semi-officers has been going in to the guilds Firelands instance, between raid days and farmed trash. The drops [have] been used to gear themself and their alts, but the stuff they havent had any use for, odd drops recipies, has been sold on the AH for quite alot of gold.[hide]Continue reading Officers’ Quarters: Secret farmers of the Firelands[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Officers’ Quarters (Guild Leadership)[/hide][hide]Officers’ Quarters: Secret farmers of the Firelands[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 09:00:00 EST.

Around Azeroth: A flight to remember

[hide][/hide]
«This is why you don’t let the moonkin ride your tank,» writes submitter Donald. «Poor [hide]Detriment[/hide] of [hide]Monolith[/hide] on Icecrown (US-H) threw out his back trying to carry fat ol’ [hide]Donhorn[/hide] right before the raid. Let this be a warning to you all!» Well, any blood elf who’s dumb enough to try to hoist a full-grown tauren on his shoulders deserves whatever happens to him. Plate armor does not count as an exoskeleton!

The Queue: Law of Locks

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

Is it just me, or is Katrana Prestor with a scaly snake eye more attractive than without? It is just me?

Oh.

AudreyR asked:

It seems like all powerful human females are blonde and every dark-haired beauty is a dragon in disguise.

I’m asking as a brunette, am I secretly evil?

Yes. I’m afraid that, should you attend our BlizzCon meetup this year, we will need to strike you through the heart with a wooden stake carved of Spanish Yew, treated with a brine of holy water and sodium chloride.

It’s not personal, Audrey. It’s just the way of things.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Law of Locks[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Law of Locks[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 11:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: Orc vs. Wild: Moonguard

[hide]Wowcrendor[/hide] tackles the complicated subject of RP servers in [hide]Orc vs. Wild: Moonguard/Goldshire RP Server[/hide]. Boar Thrills crafts a gnome disguise from local fauna and enters Goldshire to spy on the wily, somewhat quirky roleplayers. He blends in by walking and immediately meets a truly immersed roleplayer.

I found this video especially interesting because it’s the first time Wowcrendor has tackled roleplay culture. Certainly, most of the creator’s videos involve immersion and escapism, but story-based roleplay hadn’t been directly addressed. Roleplayers might not be a huge fan of the portrayal. Still, I can’t help but think exactly how true to Goldshire this video actually is.

The Queue: Favor of the Light

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

The picture above is easily my new favorite piece of WoW TCG art. It’s done by Alex Garner, and you should absolutely check out [hide]the rest of his work[/hide]. My love of the image may or may not be influenced by the fact that it is pretty much my paladin last raid tier.

WRUP: Pandaren Madness Minute

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, «What are you playing this week?» — otherwise known as [hide]WRUP[/hide]. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

In case you haven’t heard already, just this past week, Blizzard registered a trademark for Mists of Pandaria. And what, you may ask, is Mists of Pandaria?

… what? Don’t look at me. I don’t know.

Could Mists of Pandaria the next expansion for World of Warcraft? There’s plenty of evidence that this is the case — Blizzard filed the same kind of trademark for Cataclysm shortly before its official announcement. Thing is, though, Mists of Pandaria could be so many things other than an expansion, too:

A digital expansion for the WoW Trading Card Game

Blizzard’s WoW-related foray into mobile gaming

An exciting new Plug-In scent from Glade

Ultimately, though, your guess is as good as ours. What exactly are we guessing? Well, funny you should mention it — just this week, I asked our columnists a very simple question to interpret as they saw fit: «… pandaren?»[hide]Continue reading WRUP: Pandaren Madness Minute[/hide][hide]WRUP: Pandaren Madness Minute[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, though, we’re all about frost mages. In case you aren’t one, frost mages are the spec to be when fighting anything in Molten Core in 2005.

Just kidding. I kid because I love, guys. If the joke hits a little too close to home, though, it’s because there’s a very real, very prevalent, very false perception out there. It goes something like this:

Frost is for PVP. It isn’t viable for raiding.

This sentiment has been around at various levels of general acceptance since patch 1.1, and even in the most enlightened corners of Azeroth, you’ll still find those willing to perpetuate it. But then again, you’ll also find people still willing to perpetuate things like racism and gender bias, so I guess ignorance, like a weed or a cockroach or a warlock, is remarkably resilient.

At any rate, in today’s State of the Frost Mage address, you’ll no doubt discover a recurring theme. That theme is this:

Frost is absolutely, positively viable.[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], the column dedicated to [hide]arms[/hide], [hide]fury[/hide] and [hide]protection warriors[/hide]. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

Having talked about Firelands for a while and then the rather esoteric concept of reforging and optimizing your gear, this week we’re going to switch gears and talk about leveling in Cataclysm. Specifically, we’re going to talk about leveling as protection, which quite possibly is the best leveling spec for a new player. This guide is aimed at people who are just starting the game or the class.

Leveling as protection in the post-Cataclysm landscape offers several advantages.

Once you reach level 14 or so, you can begin queuing for instances as a tank, leading to fast experience and rewards. This makes gearing up a protection warrior fairly easy.

If you intend to tank in the endgame, leveling as protection will allow you to learn the role as you level rather than having to pick it up all at once.

Protection works well as a PVP spec in many brackets as you level.

Especially as you hit Outlands and Northrend, protection offers a good combination of survivability and the ability to destroy mobs for ease of questing, even for quests that normally indicate a group. Prot warriors can often pull more mobs and solo faster than DPS warriors.

[hide]Vengeance[/hide] is a lot of fun.

If you’re playing an alt, there are now several heirlooms for tanking warriors.

[hide]Hitting things in the face with a shield[/hide] is pretty awesome — I’m not going to lie.

Quite frankly, even if you don’t intend to tank at max level, protection can be an extremely fun way to level. Let’s take a beginner’s-eye view.[hide]Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Warrior[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Warrior) The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 20:00:00 EST.
