Patch 4.3 PTR: New loading screens and zone maps

You can’t hit a new dungeon without knowing where you’re going these days, can you? [hide]MMO-Champion[/hide] has datamined the new loading screens for all three new dungeons, the new Darkmoon Faire, and the Dragon Soul raid, and [hide]Wowhead News[/hide] snapped up maps for all the new instances, as well as some old.

The zone maps include not only the new instances and raid dungeons, but a new map for the Vault of Archavon, the Forge of Souls, and Baradin Hold. Baradin Hold seems to indicate we’ll be seeing a third boss with this patch. I wonder what will happen to the wandering eyes of Occu’thar?

Check out the gallery for a look at all loading screens and maps for [hide]patch 4.3[/hide].

Hunter and priest tier 13 art revealed

You know what they say about leaving the best for last? Well, Blizzard waited until the bitter end to give us a preview of what hunter and priest tier 13 will look like. And by «wait until the bitter end to give us a preview,» I mean «not give us a preview at all before the patch 4.3 PTR goes live and the art gets [hide]datamined at MMO-Champion[/hide].» Whoops!

In any case, the new tier is here, and it’s certainly interesting. Priest tier 13, Dying Light, is loaded with some pretty unusual masks that invoke memories of the creepy-cool tier 6. After looking at it for the last few minutes, I can confirm that I will have terrible nightmares tonight involving that mask. Soulless and terrifying. Which, I guess, means they got the design just right.

Hunters are getting Wyrmstalker, a cool-looking, Frostwyrm-inspired set. Remember that scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke crawls into the dead Blue Dragon for warmth? And remember how he stayed in there way too long, until it decayed into naught but bone? And then how he wore the dragon’s corpse when he went off to fight Deathwing? Remember that? That’s what you get, hunters.

The full preview of hunter and priest tier 13 is available just after the break or over on MMO-Champion.[hide]Continue reading Hunter and priest tier 13 art revealed[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Hunter and priest tier 13 art revealed[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 19:30:00 EST. Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler on balance in patch 4.3

Lead Systems Designer Greg «Ghostcrawler» Street has posted his latest [hide]Dev Watercooler[/hide], this one explaining the reasoning behind various changes in Patch 4.3. If (like me) you play melee DPS, you may be excited, unless (like me) you play a fury warrior, in which case you’ll see those often-repeated words that make your gut clench up yet again. The [hide]patch 4.3 PTR notes[/hide] are up, and here we have a discussion of trends you might be noticing.

The changes made are being done to balance out melee and ranged DPS going forward, to get enhancement shaman to stop using caster weapons and mail (the huge changes to Mental Quickness, for instance) and to use Lava Lash to spread the Flame Shock debuff around in order to simplify enhancement’s AOE. Resto shaman also get a bit of a buff, which should be nice for them, while DKs see some quality of life simplifcation.

Overall, the post is worthwhile reading (and the first of more posts to come) to get an idea of where Blizzard is going with design in 4.3.[hide]Continue reading Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler on balance in patch 4.3[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Druid[/hide], [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide]Priest[/hide], [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide]Death Knight[/hide][hide]Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler on balance in patch 4.3[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 20:00:00 EST. Patch 4.3 PTR: Changes in store for Winter’s Veil vanity pets

The [hide]patch 4.3 PTR[/hide] brings an unexpected change to the vanity pets received during the Winter’s Veil celebration. These pets were unique in that players had to have a [hide]Snowball[/hide] in order to summon their wintry companion.

It seems that the Snowballs are no longer necessary as of Patch 4.3, but there’s a catch — Winter’s Veil pets are only able to be summoned during the Winter’s Veil event. The tooltip for the pets has been changed to reflect this as follows:

[hide]Father Winter’s Helper[/hide]: Right Click to summon and dismiss your Father Winter’s Helper. Requires a Snowball to summon. Helpers are very busy year-round, and only have leisure time during the Feast of Winter Veil.

[hide]Tiny Snowman[/hide]: Right Click to summon and dismiss your Tiny Snowman. Requires a Snowball to summon. Build or destroy a tiny snowman. The snowman is larger and lasts longer during Winter Veil.

[hide]Winter Reindeer[/hide]: Right Click to summon and dismiss your Winter Reindeer. Requires a Snowball to summon. reindeer. The Winter Reindeer only dresses up for Winter Veil.

[hide]Winter’s Little Helper[/hide]: Right Click to summon and dismiss your Winter’s Little Helper. Requires a Snowball to summon. Helpers are very busy year-round, and only have leisure time during the Feast of Winter Veil.

A minor change, but it does mean that the pets, once able to be summoned year-round, are now limited to the few short weeks that Winter’s Veil is available — and it also means that the [hide]Snowmaster 9000[/hide] suddenly got a lot less handy to have around. While it’s nice that the pets no longer require a reagent to summon, it seems like the trade-off for this is pretty restrictive.

Along with the changes to existing pets, there are a ton of new pets to snap up. Follow after the break for the full list.[hide]Continue reading Patch 4.3 PTR: Changes in store for Winter’s Veil vanity pets[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Patch 4.3 PTR: Changes in store for Winter’s Veil vanity pets[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 20:30:00 EST. Patch 4.3 PTR: New achievements uncovered

Our friends over at Wowhead have uncovered the first batch of [hide]new patch 4.3 achievements[/hide], and there are some pretty awesome ones. Most of them refer to either new holiday content (primarily Winter Veil and Midsummer Fire Festival) or the new [hide]Darkmoon Faire[/hide], although there are a few achievements from the new dungeons.

Be warned that the titles and descriptions of these achievements may contain spoilers. Here are a few of my favorites:

[hide]That’s Not Canon![/hide] comes from defeating a certain boss in the Caverns of Time in a certain manner. A bit of a thumbed nose at people who don’t like all this time travel? Maybe, but the title’s hilarious enough that I can’t stop chuckling.

[hide]A-Caroling We Will Go[/hide] Now this is how you spread Winter Veil cheer. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to don my gaudiest sweater and break some Orcish eardrums.

[hide]I Was Promised a Pony[/hide] Looks like our good friend Ghostcrawler got some achievement naming duties this time around. [hide]You can’t deny it forever, Greg[/hide]. It’s true, and you know it. We are still waiting.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. Look at what’s ahead: new [hide]item storage options[/hide], [hide]cross-realm raiding[/hide], [hide]cosmetic armor skinning[/hide] and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from [hide]astride his back[/hide]!

Tuesday Morning Post: Let’s kill Sylvanas edition

Happy Tuesday morning, everyone. While we’re all waiting with bated breath for the [hide]PTR to drop[/hide], there’s at least a trickle of patch 4.3 info coming our way. We learned that [hide]rogues get to look like Batman[/hide], and that the [hide]tier 13 set bonuses[/hide] are sort of weird. It was a pretty slow Monday, however, and as of this writing, we’ve heard nothing new about when the PTR will open.Hope springs eternal. I’m just hoping the new dungeons are up ASAP, because I can’t wait to take out that lady up there, even if it’s just as an echo from the future.

Downtime this morning is just [hide]a quick series of rolling restarts[/hide] at 5 a.m. PDT, but whether you’re waiting out that quick server restart or waiting for news of the PTR, keep it here with us. We’ll have all the news as soon as it breaks. In the meantime, you can catch our usual roundup of the past seven days’ news, after the break.[hide]Continue reading Tuesday Morning Post: Let’s kill Sylvanas edition[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Realm Status[/hide], [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Tuesday Morning Post: Let’s kill Sylvanas edition[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 07:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: Do you enjoy leveling?

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Do you like leveling? Do you get excited when you pick a name, go through the opening cut sequence, and your new level 1 toon is born into world of Azeroth? For most of us, leveling is just something we do to get to the endgame. But for others, the act of leveling itself is the game.

Who are these leveling lovers? To what extremes will they go just to feed their leveling addiction? Well, I am in a guild with a guy — let’s call him J — who is the epitome of such a person. J has two accounts, and he has used all of his available slots to level characters up to level 85. Yet his craving to level continues. So what is a man to do once he runs out of room to create more characters? He deletes his level 85 toons and starts over. You heard correctly.

My guild members and I have watched J delete numerous level 85 characters just so he can create a new character of the same class and with the same name and level up all over again. It can be slightly disconcerting to say goodnight to a level 85 rogue and the next morning say hello to a rogue with the same name who is a mere level 5. But for the most part, we guild members have gotten used to J’s particular form of gameplay. Although we tease him about it relentlessly, I think we secretly all admire J; he is having fun through the simple act of leveling.

Are you a leveling lover, too?

Around Azeroth: No one expects the Dark Iron Dwarves!

[hide][/hide]
Technically, this is more around Colorado than around Azeroth, but it’s far too cool not to post. «I was riding my bike the other day and was disturbed to notice an apparent Dark Iron incursion into Denver,» writes [hide]Kelladra[/hide] of Lightbringer (US-H). «It makes sense, though. We do have a lot of microbreweries around here.»
