Breakfast Topic: How about those voices in your head?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Your friends will abandon you.

The first time I heard that ringing in my ears, it freaked me out. Wandering into Ahn’Qiraj-40 and having [hide]C’Thun[/hide] whispering sweet evil nothings in my ear about my heart exploding and being already dead is hardly someone wants to hear on the best of days, much less while raiding. Warcraft has had a history of strange and dreadful whispers, sometimes from places in the game and sometimes from actual items ([hide]Chained Essence of Eranikus[/hide], anyone?). And they always seem to be strange and terrifying. But what if they weren’t? What if they were comforting or gave you courage?

The idea that a familiar, friendly or helpful character from WoW guiding you either by being in your head or being a part of an item you carry seems a little alien, but to me, like a warm blanket for your character. Maybe it’s a certain dragon aspect watching over you, or the familiar voice of your Orc mentor telling you try again. It would inspire confidence rather than fear, congeniality rather than hostility.

Would you go along with the voice or not? Who would it be? Or do you find the idea of anyone whispering in your head (quest mechanics aside) a little weird or violating?

Around Azeroth: Your hangover morning

[hide][/hide]
«On the last day of Brewfest, as usual, I was mourning my favorite WoW holiday,» writes Gnome submitter and not-so-secret drinker [hide]Kipedget[/hide] of [hide]Got Girls[/hide] on Proudmoore (US-A). «‘Don’t go!’ I wailed at a bubbling, pretzel-laden banner. So sad.» There’s always next year, Kipedget! Your character might have even sobered up by then.

Totem Talk: Enhancement shaman changes in patch 4.3

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for [hide]elemental[/hide], [hide]enhancement[/hide], and [hide]restoration[/hide] shaman. [hide]Josh Myers[/hide] once only tackled the hard questions about enhancement but has recently expanded his sphere of responsibility to all shaman DPS specs. (And no, two-handed enhancement is still never coming back.)

I won’t lie: The past few months have left me fairly disillusioned about playing an enhancement shaman. Nothing in Cataclysm will ever match the absolute horror that was the last patch of Wrath of the Lich King for enhancement. However, our total lack of scaling with secondary stats that aren’t mastery, horrific AOE DPS every patch, and our total lack of any form of worthwhile DPS cooldown have all been ingredients in the lukewarm dish that is enhancement. If this was Iron Chef: America, even Alton Brown would be hard pressed to make us sound good.

Thankfully, the 4.3 PTR is up, and with it comes some changes to enhancement shaman that have me excited.[hide]Continue reading Totem Talk: Enhancement shaman changes in patch 4.3[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide](Shaman) Totem Talk[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Totem Talk: Enhancement shaman changes in patch 4.3[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 08 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: Optimizing your mage’s gear through Rawr

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, we’re talking about what is arguably the game’s most trusted gear optimization program: [hide]Rawr[/hide]. Also, we’re planning to see how many times I need to type the word «rawr» before my spellchecker snaps and murders me through my computer screen.

Close your eyes.

Imagine, if you will, that you have a mage. Ha ha, of course you have a mage. Sometimes I crack myself up. Now imagine that your mage has gear, but that gear is not optimal. Now open your eyes.

Hello, every mage ever.

Yeah, chances are pretty close to 100% that no matter who you are and how religiously you play the game, your mage, beloved though he may be, does not have every slot filled with best-in-slot gear and does not have every item perfectly gemmed, enchanted and reforged so that your DPS is up to its fullest possible potential. WoW is a computer game — an old one, sure, but still home to millions of algorithms and formulas and computations and other math terms that I don’t fully understand. It would take, I firmly believe, a robot from the future to calculate all of those numbers and variables and turn them into something a human brain can parse accurately enough to actually benefit from.

Well, mages and magesses, I have recently contacted Kavan, one of the main authors of the ubiquitous gear optimization program Rawr, and I can tell you that he is that robot from the future. I only pray he can protect us from whatever other, more evil and technologically advanced robot from the future that might at some point follow him through the wormhole with a directive to kill our unborn children or something, because you know that’s what’s happening.[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: Optimizing your mage’s gear through Rawr[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: Optimizing your mage’s gear through Rawr[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 08 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. Patch 4.3: Raid Finder loot rules updated

Blizzard has just posted a detailed explanation of how loot rolls will work in the forthcoming [hide]Raid Finder[/hide] feature in [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. With the new feature, players whose currently assigned class role, be it DPS, tank, or healer, will get a +100 added to their loot roll. Loot rolls for items with parry or dodge on them, for instance, will award the tanks in the group who roll need +100 to their roll. The system will only be looking at class role and not spec yet, but Blizzard is considering adding to the system and even potentially implementing this type of roll bonus to the Dungeon Finder as well.

We will have more information as it becomes available, but at first glance, this system seems to fit very well within what Blizzard is trying to go for in terms of Raid Finder accessibility. Tanks get to roll on tank gear, DPSers get to roll on DPS gear, and healers get to roll on healing gear. Greed rolls are still available for off-spec gear and do not function like the need rolls, so if no tank needs something, for example, the greed roll system will still work as intended. I think these will be positive changes.[hide]Continue reading Patch 4.3: Raid Finder loot rules updated[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Patch 4.3: Raid Finder loot rules updated[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST. Patch 4.3: Chromatic Dragon, other pet models revealed

[hide][/hide]
Alayna over at Wowhead News has revealed several [hide]new pet models[/hide] in the PTR data files. The most visually striking one is the new Chromatic Dragon, which is speculated to be the guild reward for completing the [hide]tier 13 rogue legendary[/hide]. Chromatic Dragons are typically portrayed as multicolored, however, so this may not be the final appearance.

This is also our first look at the model for Wrathion. We know he’ll be involved in the legendary quest line in some fashion, but exactly how remains to be revealed. Perhaps a [hide]hidden quest giver in Ravenholdt Manor[/hide]? However it turns out, I’m sure someone gets [hide]ambushed[/hide] in the end.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. Review the [hide]official patch notes[/hide], and then dig into what’s ahead: new [hide]item storage options[/hide], [hide]cross-realm raiding[/hide], [hide]cosmetic armor skinning[/hide] and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from [hide]astride his back[/hide]!

Raid Rx: Preparing for heroic Firelands

Every week, [hide]Raid Rx[/hide] will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is [hide]Matt Low[/hide], the grand poohbah of [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and a founder of [hide]Plus Heal[/hide], a discussion community for healers of all experience levels and interests. Catch his weekly podcast on healing, raiding and leading, the [hide]Matticast[/hide].

After the [hide]earlier Firelands nerf[/hide], a number of guilds that had been struggling on some of the later bosses (Majordomo Staghelm and Ragnaros, for instance) have either cleared it out or are extremely close to doing so. With [hide]tier 13[/hide] content (and Deathwing) looming soon, it makes sense for leaders to maximize the equipment for raid groups. Healers are definitely not an exception. As a healer, you’ll find that challenges will … heat up.

Anyway, this week you’ll find a list of things you should know and keep in mind as you and your raid group start making headway into the next level of Firelands.[hide]Continue reading Raid Rx: Preparing for heroic Firelands[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raid Rx (Raid Healing)[/hide][hide]Raid Rx: Preparing for heroic Firelands[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 15:30:00 EST. The Lawbringer: Glider’s story ends

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Deathwing isn’t the only great beast to be impaled to death in an [hide]End Time[/hide] this year, it seems. The tale of Glider, one of the biggest and most famous automation bot software packages for World of Warcraft, is effectively over. Based on reading [hide]various forum links[/hide] (sent by a reader, thank you much) and a hefty amount of [hide]Internet Wayback Machine[/hide] research, it appears that the lawsuit was settled and Glider is no more. What were the terms of the settlement, and why did Glider settle after the news back in 2010?

When I [hide]last updated you all[/hide] about the Glider case back in December 2010, the courts reversed much of the decision in regards to the EULA copyright infringement claims but not with respect to violations of the [hide]Digital Millenium Copyright Act[/hide], as Glider circumvented the [hide]Warden software[/hide] to essentially hack Blizzard’s software. MDY Glider was not victorious per se, but it was definitely in a better position than it would have been had the copyright infringement stuff stood.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Glider’s story ends[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Glider’s story ends[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: How to evaluate your tanking with World of Logs

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog [hide]Righteous Defense[/hide].

While checking logs may seem to be the province of DPS and healers more than tanks, there’s still value to be gained by diving into the numbers and checking out the numerical ins and outs of your tanking performances. There’s much to learn and review when it comes to checking over the fine points of your threat rotation and survivability responses.

In this column, I’ll go over three specific ways you can use a World of Logs parse to evaluate your efficiency casting [hide]Crusader Strike[/hide] and how you handled damage spikes, determine what killed you, and discover how you could have prevented that premature demise.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: How to evaluate your tanking with World of Logs[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: How to evaluate your tanking with World of Logs[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST.
