WoW Moviewatch: Largest crit in the world

[hide]This video[/hide] is a little different from our usual fare. [hide]Swifty[/hide] and [hide]Cartoonz[/hide] went to heroic measures to put together the largest crit in the world. You can watch as someone gets slammed by a crit for over 600k damage.

I won’t go into details about how the team achieved this level of damage, since that’s the whole point of the video. Essentially, though, two teams got together in [hide]Warsong Gulch[/hide] and conspired to apply all the buffs and debuffs possible.

Don’t worry about getting hit by a crit of this size in your usual Warsong Gulch gameplay. When you watch the video, you’ll see that it took a lot of work and a little luck to make this crit happen.

15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide].

Do your friends, family or coworkers still cling to old-fashioned notions of video games as the provenance of social misfits and those who can’t stay focused on the demands and rewards of real life? Take heart — there are professionals out there who understand the gaming perspective and are working to help normalize gaming as mainstream pastime it has actually become. One of the many leading the charge is WoW player and master’s-level psychology student Erinia of Cenarion Circle, whose track toward becoming a licensed mental health counselor includes helping both players and other mental health professionals understand the pulls, demands, and concerns of players who enjoy games like WoW.

Erinia has discovered that magic sweet spot where work, play, and a passion for all of it come together. «Am I an exceptional player?» Erinia asks. «Probably not, but WoW has opened up a lot of doors for me in the real world.» We would accuse the lady of understatement here; click past the break for more on counseling, World of Warcraft, and new perspectives on how to help troubled people — who happen to enjoy playing games — understand themselves.[hide]Continue reading 15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Interviews[/hide], [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide][hide]15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 13:00:00 EST. Blizzard auctioning off old servers for charity

Want to own a real piece of Warcraft history? Ever wanted to own your entire server? Starting Oct. 17, Blizzard will be [hide]auctioning off[/hide] the actual server blades of yesteryear to benefit the [hide]St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital[/hide]. WoW has gone through a lot of technical changes over the years, and the old server blades are just that — old. What better way than to celebrate the early years of the game than to give the proceeds to such an important cause?

The auctions will last from Oct. 17 through Nov. 14, with each realm’s original server blade going on sale. What’s a server blade, you ask? Each server, with its own processing power and all that jazz, lives in a rack with other servers at the big server enclosure. Each auctioned server will have a little plaque attached with the server’s name, its dates of operation, and signatures from the team. This is really, really cool. If I had the cash to pony up for Frostwolf, my original server, I would. That thing broke so many times in the early days that I’d want to pop it open and see all the horrible, nightmarish things lurking inside.

Check out the [hide]auction information page[/hide] for which servers will be auctioned off on which days.

Addon Spotlight: More information from Visual Combat Table

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

Tanking used to be inaccessible because of the numbers game — mitigation numbers that were hidden away in the great unknown. Players had to rely on the stalwart parsers and number crunchers over at [hide]EJ[/hide], [hide]Tankspot[/hide], [hide]Maintankadin[/hide], and all sorts of websites in order to inform the community about these magic numbers on defensive stats to let a tank do his job. Nowadays, hit and miss numbers are easily displayed for players, and defense as a statistic to worry about is gone forever.

That all being said, the tanking game is still a numbers game, but this time it is more nuanced with the introduction of mastery and the ability to mitigate most damage a tank takes. You’ve seen numbers being thrown around and you may or may not know what they mean. Well, Visual Combat Table (VCT) is here to make sense of those numbers for you. Tanking is soon to become another hot commodity role to fill in the upcoming [hide]Raid Finder[/hide], so arming new tanks with mitigation knowledge is always a good thing.

My introduction to VCT started with an email from its creator letting me know about its existence and the role he felt the addon played in the tanking community as a whole. While reading his email, I thought back to my first few weeks of tanking in Cataclysm and realized that for all of the information the game was showing and telling me there still was a great deal that I was struggling with. I wanted more information, and sifting through forum threads wasn’t giving me a quick enough answer.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: More information from Visual Combat Table[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Add-Ons[/hide], [hide]AddOn Spotlight[/hide][hide]Addon Spotlight: More information from Visual Combat Table[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. Encrypted Text: Reflecting on our Cataclysm abilities

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Encrypted Text[/hide] for [hide]assassination[/hide], [hide]combat[/hide] and [hide]subtlety[/hide] rogues. [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with any questions or article suggestions you’d like to see covered here.

I love [hide]October[/hide]. While any baseball fan will tell you that there’s a special feeling in the air during October, I couldn’t care less about the [hide]World Series[/hide]. I know plenty of football fans who enjoy spending their Octobers obsessing over their [hide]fantasy rosters[/hide], but my team has cruised to a 5-and-0 start already. I’m not even particularly excited that my birthday falls in October, as another event takes priority. October is [hide]BlizzCon[/hide] month for me, and I can’t wait to hear all about what’s in store for rogues as we learn about next year’s expansion.

When thinking about what cool abilities rogues might see in the next WoW expansion, I started reflecting on the [hide]new spells[/hide] we received in Cataclysm. For our new high-level spells, we picked up [hide]Combat Readiness[/hide], [hide]Redirect[/hide], and [hide]Smoke Bomb[/hide]. [hide]Recuperate[/hide] was added to our low-level spells to help make leveling smoother and to provide rogues with a healing option that didn’t involve bandages. How useful have these spells proven themselves to be over the past year?[hide]Continue reading Encrypted Text: Reflecting on our Cataclysm abilities[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Rogue[/hide], [hide](Rogue) Encrypted Text[/hide][hide]Encrypted Text: Reflecting on our Cataclysm abilities[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 09:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Once upon a time in Exodar

[hide][/hide]
Submitter Maraad just couldn’t resist taking his new stallion for a stroll around the Exodar, even though the paladin horsey is patently too small for an enormous Draenei and would probably snap in half underneath Maraad’s weight.

Is he simply excited about turning level 20 and being able to quit walking everywhere, or has that Blood Elf Bandit mask seeped into his brain and turned him into a horse thief? If it’s the latter, let me remind you that stealing horses is way too 19th-century for a blue space goat.

WoW Moviewatch: Exodar Disco

With [hide]BlizzCon[/hide] about two weeks away, the [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] staff is celebrating the wild, wonderful world of WoW machinima by revisiting some old favorites.

[hide]Mat McCurley[/hide] is a gentleman of taste, aplomb, and eloquence. He’s a joy in conversation and a pleasure to share a cup of coffee with. He does, however, have a verbal tic. If you utter the words «Exodar,» «Draenei,» or «disco» around him, he explodes into song. It’s really quite amazing, since he does an astounding rendition of [hide]Exodar Disco[/hide].

Exodar Disco may be the finest piece of work that Greyfoo has ever created (that, or we’re all just obsessed with it because McCurley is such a big fan). We even play it at BlizzCon every year. Here’s hoping you can enjoy this piece, whether it’s a repeat for you or your first time.

Metzen talks user-created content at GDC panel

Blizzard’s Chris Metzen was on hand at [hide]GDC Online[/hide] to discuss [hide]user-created content[/hide] for World of Warcraft and how the system just wouldn’t fly in WoW’s architecture. The logistics of player-created content in a game with millions upon millions of players would, most likely, be too overwhelming for a system and game that thrives on polish and quality control. Don’t expect to see user-generated content in WoW any time soon.

While I am a fan of this type of content, I don’t believe it really has a place in WoW. Azeroth is a much more story-driven, linear experience than most people want to discuss, and Blizzard likes to hold our hands through it all to make sure we’re doing things according to plan. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, just one approach to an MMO’s leveling and group content. In games like City of Heroes, the player-created content that was available made sense in terms of logistics and volume. For WoW, I can’t even fathom how hard it would be to separate the wheat from the chaff.
