Thrall’s return to the Horde and more lore from San Diego Comic-Con

Chris Metzen was at the [hide]San Diego Comic-Con[/hide] showing off new WoW, StarCraft, and Diablo merchandise with a [hide]panel of Blizzard writers and merchandise partners[/hide]. After the discussion about merchandise, the future of Blizzard licensed products, and the new comics, the floor was opened up to questions and answers about anything, lore included. Fans took this time to ask Metzen all about the new direction Blizzard is taking Thrall, including whether the Horde will remain the same after Cataclysm.

Metzen might have spilled the beans on what we can expect from [hide]BlizzCon[/hide] this year, including some big revelations about the Horde and Thrall’s place in it. Around the 51-minute mark of the panel, Metzen muses about how awesome it has been, growing the Warcraft story from its simple beginnings as an RTS and getting to flesh out the world. At one point, Metzen says, «One day, come on, your Warchief is coming back. Right? There’s more with Thrall,» and emphatically mentions BlizzCon, indicating they have much to announce on the subject.[hide]Continue reading Thrall’s return to the Horde and more lore from San Diego Comic-Con[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Blizzard[/hide], [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Thrall’s return to the Horde and more lore from San Diego Comic-Con[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 20:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: Magery within the Firelands

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, we dispel mage-related myths, expose wizardly untruth, and separate magical fact from fiction … just like the Mythbusters, only with more Fireballs.

Oh hai thar! As the master of infiltration, I think everyone saw this post coming. By this point in time, is there a single column that I haven’t managed to take over? I really don’t understand why people resist it, I should just be the writer for WoW Insider. The rest of the staff is pretty much superfluous at this point. Well, maybe we can keep them around as interns to fetch me coffee and deal with trolls.

I swear, though, this isn’t my warlock side that’s taken over. No, no, we’re a bit more sensible than that here, the editors would never let a warlock write the mage column. Instead, it’s the balance druid part of me that joins you today, spewing out your mystical tid-bits. Honest, they made me swear an oath and everything. What they didn’t count on is that my balance side is rather bitter towards mages and their [hide]Focus Magic[/hide] swapping; warlocks are awesome enough to give me [hide]Dark Intent[/hide]. Also, mages kind of blew up the Well of Eternity thing and that’s not cool.

Let’s begin today’s lesson, class!

Editors Note: Warning! A moonkin’s attempt at bitter comedy ahead![hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: Magery within the Firelands[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: Magery within the Firelands[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 21:00:00 EST. WRUP: That totally safe theme park we’re working on

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, «What are you playing this week?» — otherwise known as [hide]WRUP[/hide]. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

Earlier this week, we reported on World Joyland, the [hide]counterfeit Blizzard theme park[/hide] that recently opened in China. It’s got not just one cheap knock off Arthas, but two cheap knock off Arthases. You can visit [hide]Silvermoon City[/hide], or even get your picture taken in front of a [hide]half-draenei, half-dwarf[/hide] who is allied with the Horde. It looks super confusing.

That got us here at WoW Insider thinking about a real, non-counterfeit World of Warcraft theme park with actual safety standards. A delicious lunch at The Mage Table. People dressed in Boomkin costumes earning minimum wage. A fun swim in Thousand Needles! (Too soon?)

So, this week, in addition to the usual «what are you playing» question, I had our intrepid columnists help design our own WoW theme park. Petting zoos! Fire! It’s all there!

Care to sign a waver before following me after the break? Totally routine, I assure you.[hide]Continue reading WRUP: That totally safe theme park we’re working on[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide][hide]WRUP: That totally safe theme park we’re working on[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 22:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: Have you found any «secret» locations?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

If there is one thing to say about the World of Warcraft, it is that it is enormous and seamless. Blizzard loves Easter eggs and has hidden secrets and secret areas all across the entire world. It goes without saying that you have found at least one or two of these secret areas. Some people even make it a hobby of finding and claiming secret areas.

Note that there is a difference between secret areas and areas only reachable by exploit. The first is intended by Blizzard, but the second is a bannable offense. Do not try and exploit your way to Old Ironforge (especially since you can just walk in now as of 4.1!), and do not try to enter Mount Hyjal, or else the Guardians of Bliz— okay, so maybe my knowledge of secret areas is a bit dated, but I still enjoy the hunt for them!

Some guilds, especially on RP realms, even use and claim secret areas and locations as their headquarters and sometimes even hold guild meetings in these lcoations. This is a great alternative to player housing, and Blizzard actually encourages people and guilds to find and enjoy such fantastic locations. With Deathwing’s emergence and flying mounts now available in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, previously unreachable areas are now just a short flight away, so there are more tucked-away locations than ever!

What secret locations have you found, and which is your favorite? Do you often go there? Does your guild have any special spot to claim as its own?

Around Azeroth: Dogs and cats living together

[hide][/hide]
A couple of years back, a golden retriever at a Kansas zoo [hide]adopted[/hide] and [hide]nursed[/hide] three white tiger cubs that were abandoned by their birth mother. We can only assume that a similar situation led to this screenshot. Worgen hunter [hide]Thereweasel[/hide] of [hide]Death By Weasel[/hide] on Velen (US-A) is raising this multi-generational frostsaber family as if they were her own pups, which is clearly against nature. Won’t somebody please think of the kittens?

The Light and How to Swing It: 4 ways to improve your threat without sacrificing survivability

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog [hide]Righteous Defense[/hide].

Last week, we talked about to improve your combat table coverage through four easy tips. This week, I’m going to swing the pendulum to the other direction, away from survivability and toward the Candyland that is threat. Truthfully, in this age of Vengeance, there sometimes doesn’t seem to be a particular need to work on augmenting one’s threat, but corner cases exist where your personal damage output can be crucial to the success of an encounter.

When it comes to boosting threat, the usual advice is often to gem differently or wear some hit or expertise trinkets. The downside to that, of course, is that you’re trading survivability for an increase in damage output. While that might be kosher for heroics or farm content, when the bosses are still dangerous, you want to play it safe. As I’ll be detailing in today’s column, it’s very possible to bring the pain without shooting yourself in the foot.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: 4 ways to improve your threat without sacrificing survivability[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: 4 ways to improve your threat without sacrificing survivability[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. Fully localized WoW launching in Brazil

Brazilian gamers will be happy to know that Blizzard has announced that a fully localized version of the World of Warcraft client, as well as localized game payment options and subscription rates, is coming to Brazil later in 2011. Brazil has grown into one of the largest video game markets in the world, despite heavy taxes on entertainment. The free-to-play market has thrived in Brazil, and Blizzard aims to grab the Brazilian market with local pricing options and support.

The new client is fully localized in Brazilian Portuguese, with Blizzard changing names, places, items, monsters, and everything in between. The monthly cost associated with playing WoW in Brazil looks like it will cost 15 Brazilian Real, or about $9.67 a month, with cheaper plans for purchasing more months in advance. This probably does not take into account the taxes that are usually levied against entertainment products in Brazil.

With the localization comes an official Brazilian Portuguese WoW community site and Portuguese customer support. A free language pack for players currently subscribed to the North American servers will be available in Portuguese as well.

Congratulations to all of the Brazilian WoW players out there who get to experience the game in their native Brazilian Portuguese. As more information comes out about the launch and the language packs, we will be sure to let you know all of the details. Until then, check out Blizzard’s [hide]WoW Brazil page[/hide] for more information.[hide]Continue reading Fully localized WoW launching in Brazil[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Blizzard[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Fully localized WoW launching in Brazil[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST. Raid Rx: Guide to healing Alysrazor

Every week, [hide]Raid Rx[/hide] will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is [hide]Matt Low[/hide], the grand poohbah of [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and a founder of [hide]Plus Heal[/hide], a discussion community for healers of all experience levels and interests. Catch his weekly podcast on healing, raiding and leading, the [hide]Matticast[/hide].

Up for a really big bird? Maybe a little BBQ bird? Although more of dragon than anything, Alysrazor does sort of look like a bird. This fight isn’t really as challenging as Baleroc, but it does have a fair share of obstacles. You’d better be able to [hide]heal on the move[/hide], as this encounter will throw a ton of stuff your way when you least expect it. Know where your tanks are at all times, because if the monsters they’re tanking become really angry and throw a tantrum, you’ll need to step up and keep them alive.

If you have a basic understanding of the encounter, keep reading. You may wish to refer to the encounter journal or other resources to get the whole picture of what is going on and what the different roles are.[hide]Continue reading Raid Rx: Guide to healing Alysrazor[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Raid Rx (Raid Healing)[/hide], [hide]Raid Guides[/hide][hide]Raid Rx: Guide to healing Alysrazor[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Lawbringer: Mailbag 4.0

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Welcome to another exciting mailbag edition of The Lawbringer. I’ve pulled some of my favorite questions from my inbox this week to discuss topics like slander, libel, and that pesky idea about gold selling that I had during one the recent [hide]WoW Insider Show[/hide] (I think it was the WoW Insider Show; I do a lot of shows sometimes) about the auction house. Somewhere, Basil has felt a twinge in his leg, as if a thousand voices cried out in unison and then were quickly silenced by the ringing of the auction house bells …

If you’ve got a question for The Lawbringer, send it along to [hide]mat@wowinsider.com[/hide]. Be sure to include some sort of subject that lets me know that you’re asking a Lawbringer question, because otherwise it will probably get lost in the millions of potential tags your email could be filed under. A long time ago, I was reading a post by venerable internet man [hide]Merlin Mann[/hide] about [hide]managing your inbox[/hide] and fighting with the notion that email needed to be sorted and dealt with quickly. It’s been years since then, and I hate my inbox more and more every day because I never listened to Merlin.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Mailbag 4.0[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Mailbag 4.0[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 17:00:00 EST. The Daily Quest: Absence makes the heart grow fonder

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

You know what I miss? Class-based quests. Not the simple You have reached level 10, let’s do a quest where you learn how to cast that one spell I just taught you variety — the kind like the old quests found in Molten Core or the epic mount quests that warlocks and paladins had to do. I did all but one of them at one point in time or another, the exception being the hunter quest that you picked up in Molten Core. And each of them was unique, fun, interesting. And … giant pains in the butt now that I think about it — but hey, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Today, we’ve got at a few posts from around the blogosphere regarding absences of one kind or another.

[hide]Orcish Army Knife[/hide] laments the lack of level 50-60 water and offers some suggestions on where to get [hide]your mana fix[/hide].

[hide]Flow[/hide] ponders the lack of incentives to keep raiders in your guild happy and [hide]raiding effectively[/hide].

[hide]Raging Monkeys[/hide] ponders what would be lacking if the game happened to lack a [hide]proper heroic feel[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.
