Breakfast Topic: Will you quit with a bang or fade away?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

I always thought I’d go out with a bang, one last hurrah. Perhaps a ride through the Horde capital cities with 39 of my closest Alliance pals, leaving a path of devastation as we destroy anyone who dared get in our way. Maybe I’d take my druid on one last flight from Booty Bay to Light’s Hope Chapel, or teleport to the Moonglade and fly down to Un’Goro crater. I’d take in the disjointed, chaotic beauty that is Azeroth one last time.

How did I hang it up? After logging on for a few weeks only for jewelcrafting dailies before leaving for work, I was late one day and skipped my dailies. I never bothered to log back on. After a week, I finally realized I’d stopped playing, went to the forums, and informed my guild leader that I would be removing myself as an officer due to lack of playtime. I hadn’t fully decided to quit yet, and then I was cleaning up hard drive space. Five years of patches and expansions had inflated my World of Warcraft folder to almost 35GB — and with one quick keystroke (and a subsequent confirmation), it was gone.

I was always under the impression that I’d have to actively try to quit, agonizing over the thought of never logging on again. I was wrong. Quitting was just the way life worked out. It wasn’t something I planned, it wasn’t something I was hoping for, and it’s just the way it worked out. And it was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done.

Would you want to go out with a bang or out with a fizzle? Is there one thing you absolutely must do before you hang it up?

Around Azeroth: Like a bird on a wire

[hide][/hide]
«Owning a firehawk is a big responsibility — they need a lot of exercise!» writes [hide]Kashina[/hide] of [hide]Electric Mayhem[/hide] on Kargath (US-H). «It’s not easy to ride one since, well, they’re on fire. But it is possible to take them out for walkies. You just need a pair of Flame Druid wings and a long licorice Twizzler leash. Just beware of the giant, fiery droppings! Here’s a screenshot of [hide]Shishioo[/hide] taking a leisurely stroll with his birdy.»

The Queue: Mists of the Naaru

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] will be your host today. Click my name! It won’t hurt … FOR LONG!

You know who I miss? The naaru. What’s up with our wind chime friends? Are they all on vacation from fighting the Legion? I don’t think I’ve spoken to a naaru since I helped out old crusader [hide]What’s-His-Face[/hide] in Icecrown, dying his slow and painful death just moments away from the fun and merriment of the Argent Tournament. More naaru! I hope the next expansion is called Mists of the Naaru and we get playable naaru because naaaaarrrrrruuuuuuuuuuuuuu …

[In reference to yesterday’s title image] If most of the TCG artwork is anywhere near the quality of that, I will probably have to start collecting them.

Yes, it is. We say it all the time, but it always bears repeating: The Cryptozoic artists are some of the most talented in the business. Big, big props to its art team for coming up with all of the amazing art that they do. I love it all.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Mists of the Naaru[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Mists of the Naaru[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 07 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. Know Your Lore, Tinfoil Hat Edition: The Mists of Pandaria

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

I never thought in a million years that I’d be revisiting the [hide]topic of the pandaren[/hide], but it looks like it’s now something worth discussing. Earlier this week, it was discovered that Blizzard [hide]filed a new trademark[/hide] for something called «Mists of Pandaria.» Blizzard’s done this before, filing the Cataclysm trademark back in 2009 before the expansion was announced. This has led to the assumption that the mysteriously named «Mists of Pandaria» is lined up to be the next expansion. Needless to say, this information was so far out of left field that it appeared to be coming in from the right.

But let’s think about this from a lore standpoint. All expansions need a storyline behind them — now moreso than ever, given the extremely story-driven vehicle that is Cataclysm. For a race that was originally an April Fool’s joke, the popularity of the pandaren, as well as what little written word we have on the race, makes this a pretty interesting prospect. Believe it or not, there are actually potential reasons behind all of this, given what’s happened so far in Azeroth to date. So let’s take a tinfoil hat look at what this expansion could theoretically look like, from a story standpoint.

Today’s Know Your Lore is a Tinfoil Hat edition, meaning the following is a speculative look into what has gone before and what’s to come. The events presented are just theories at this point and should not be taken as fact. The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Since Blizzard dropped [hide]the Diablo 3 bombshell[/hide] on us early Monday, I will post the second article in my [hide]series on micro-transaction models[/hide] next week. For those of you who have been living under the proverbial internet rock (you are missing some awesome memes right now), Blizzard announced that Diablo 3 would feature two auction houses, one using in-game gold as currency and the [hide]other using real currency[/hide] that would be deposited into a Battle.net account wallet and used from there.

The whole system gets more intriguing when you take into account that sales made on the real-money auction house can make their way to your own very real wallet through an unannounced third party or deposited back into your Battle.net wallet for use on anything digital in the Blizzard store, including WoW game time.

If you’re a regular reader of [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], you already know how excited I get over virtual currency. This is my wheelhouse. I feel like a master carpenter at Wood Con 2011, cosplaying as my favorite oak tree, quercus alnifolia. Pair that with real currency, and excitement levels hit the stratosphere. I may break through the atmosphere at some point. That faint sonic boom you hear will be me hurtling through the air in excitement and wonderment.

Sure, the Diablo real-money transaction (RMT) auction house is not related to World of Warcraft — or is it? Oh, it very much is. Faithful readers and not faithful alike (how could you, Debbie?) have been writing in questions via Twitter and email asking me to explain the auction house and talk about some of the potential legal and tax issues that could come around because of it. Also, many people want to know how the RMT auction house could benefit World of Warcraft, despite Rob Pardo’s saying there are no plans to bring it over to WoW. Let’s take a look at your questions.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. Phat Loot Phriday: Mirrored Boots

Throgg slid the plate boots onto his feet with a triumphant jerk. «They fit well.»

Lolegolas nodded in agreement before taking another sip of tea. His hands were shaking visibly, and the tea threatened to slosh over the side. «We can ignore the reflective top and assume you won’t be tucking your shoes under anyone’s skirts.»

«[hide]Mirrored Boots[/hide] good for tanks,» Throgg said, ignoring the jibe. «Very masterful. I didn’t even need to loot them from a dead monster. Locally made by craftsmen.»

Lolegolas started to agree but was interrupted by wracking coughs. He covered his mouth with a fist and spat flecks of blood. He waved away the orc. «It’s nothing.»

«Withdrawal,» Throgg stated simply. «You shouldn’t have done it.» The orc crossed the room and laid a hand on the blood elf’s shoulder. «Going to find ale house, bring back beer. We’ll spend a few nights here, let you rest.»

«I’ll be fine,» Lolegolas claimed, making motions to stand up.

«Rest quietly,» Throgg said, «or I’ll knock you to sleep. Lay down. I’ll be right back.»

The Daily Quest: Decompressing

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

Oh dear, summer’s nearly over, isn’t it? My dad and my brother are cramming in as much fishing as they can over the next few weeks. As for me, I’ll continue quietly working away at home and being entertained with stories of said fishing excursions. Sitting quietly by a buggy lake and staring at a pole with no fantastical internet distractions is just not my idea of a good time.

Still, fishing is supposed to be awfully relaxing — and speaking of relaxing, we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere concerning the art of simply letting all that stress and frustration go.

[hide]Manalicious[/hide] has some excellent advice for players frustrated while having one of [hide]those raid nights[/hide].

[hide]Big Bear Butt[/hide] thinks the game is a little easier when you look at it with a sense of humor — even those annoying [hide]Molten Front dailies[/hide].

Lastly, while [hide]FeralTree[/hide] doesn’t have anything to say right meow about the subject of relaxation, he does have one word of advice for feral kitties unable to get their paws on [hide]Fandral’s staff: Nyan[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

The Guild, Season 5, Episode 02: Crash Pad is a convention nightmare

Episode 2 of the fifth season of [hide]The Guild[/hide], [hide]Felicia Day[/hide]’s webseries about an unlikely bunch of MMO gamers and their wacky hijinks in and out of game, released this week.

The Knights of Good have finally made it to the gaming convention but, as usual, things don’t go very well for them. Everyone has to share the same room at the hotel (been there), with Zaboo sleeping under a coffee table (done that). Bladezz’s shower spying and Vork’s (amazing as usual) food theft are high moments. I am excited for more convention antics in the coming weeks.

The Guild has been hitting its stride in the past few seasons, and it remains a quality watch. Check out this week’s episode, with new episodes hitting Xbox Live on Tuesdays and MSN video on Thursdays.

This week, I’ll be pulling questions from some of my followers on Twitter.
