Tuesday Morning Post: Glimpses edition

[hide][/hide]
Happy Tuesday morning, everyone. It’s been a sort of weird week in WoW. [hide]Patch 4.2.2[/hide] is on the PTR but doesn’t seem to provide any major changes other than correcting a few tooltips. It does, however, make us all sort of antsier than ever for patch 4.3, and Community Manager Nethaera only stoked those flames with the release of the [hide]above screenshot[/hide]. She neglected, however, to reveal what it signified.

This, of course, has set off a firestorm of comments and theories. Could it mean playable ethereals in the next expansion? Could it be a red herring to distract us from the Pandaren? Could it just be a non sequitur thrown up by a bored CM? Myself, I’m going for the theory that we’ll see some new features in patch 4.3 introduced lorewise by Consortium vendors in capital cities. That said, only time will tell for sure. For now, the folks at Blizzard aren’t saying any more, and so we wait.

On the plus side, you won’t have to wait too long for the servers to come back up this morning. We’re dealing with some [hide]rolling restarts at 5 a.m. PDT[/hide], after which we should be free and clear. While you’re waiting out the short downtime, be sure to catch up all things WoW with our usual roundup, after the break.[hide]Continue reading Tuesday Morning Post: Glimpses edition[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Realm Status[/hide], [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Tuesday Morning Post: Glimpses edition[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 07:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: What happens when a raid ends early?

Last week, we started and finished our raid night about 45 minutes into the block of time set aside for downing bosses because, well, all the bosses were dead. We set aside 3 hours for attempts on Ragnaros 25-man and he was dead in 45 minutes. Flabbergasted and sort of taken aback, I had no idea what to do. I had set aside all of this time for the night to do what I usually did on Monday nights and, here I was, stupid and perplexed that my time had magically freed up. Four episodes of Breaking Bad later, it was time to sleep.

The night that I am writing this, we are doing the same thing as last week — Ragnaros is the only one left, and hopefully he dies in a minimal number of attempts. There are so many episodes of [hide]Breaking Bad[/hide] left to watch, [hide]League of Legends[/hide] games to play, articles to get ahead on, and people to see. Even though I could be doing everything and anything, I still love to raid. I guess I’m just a little weird like that.

What do you do when your raid suddenly disappears or all the bosses are dead? Does your guild still use the time to do old content or does everyone just sort of break for the night? I know it sounds like a weird question, that shock of suddenly having the night available is so wacky sometimes.

Blizzard announces 2011 Global Writing Contest

It’s that time of year again — the time when all hopeful writers put fingers to keys and come up with the kind of prose that could win them a trip to Blizzard’s headquarters. The [hide]2011 Global Writing Contest[/hide] is looking for stories from 2,500 to 7,500 words, set in the Warcraft, Diablo or StarCraft universes. This year, the grand prize offers a trip to Blizzard headquarters to meet with the Blizzard writing staff, a host of signed books from Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft, as well as a Doomhammer of your very own.

Interested in putting together an entry? Check out the [hide]official rules and FAQ[/hide] at the official site. The deadline this year is Sept. 28, so getting started sooner rather than later is advised. You can also take a look at last year’s [hide]winners and runners-up[/hide] on the official website. While you’re at it, why not take a look at our [hide]interviews with last year’s winners[/hide] as well? Good luck to all who enter!

Around Azeroth: How you gonna keep ’em down on the farm?

[hide][/hide]
[hide]Kynora[/hide] of Khadgar (US-A) may only be level 10, but she has the cynicism and total lack of attention span of a hardened raider. She and her friend grew bored defending the farm in Arathi Basin and broke out some reading material to pass the time. I’m sure if there were some Azerothian version of smartphones, they’d be playing Helsing’s Fire right up until a rogue stuck a dagger in their backs.

Real ID grouping feature out of beta, remains free

The [hide]Real ID party grouping feature[/hide], which allows players across realms to group up and run dungeons through the Dungeon Finder with same-faction Real ID friends, is officially out of beta and remains a free service.

When the service was first announced, a premium price was going to be attached to the service, but since launching, Real ID grouping is not part of the premium package — it’s free for everyone. Blizzard reserved the right to add features to the premium suite of WoW services, but this one is here to stay for free.

I was skeptical about the costs associated with the service in the beginning, but after trying out the service with fellow WoW Insider editors, I was hooked. Paying for the service, however, was not something I would have done. Players have a certain expectation about what they get with their monthly subscriptions, and in a world where free-to-play MMOs and games charge small amounts all over the place for items and boosts, a subscription game in the vein of World of Warcraft has a harder time justifying the extra costs because of the nature of the monthly subscription beast. It is nice to see that Blizzard is adding this feature for all players, no cost attached.

Around Azeroth: Take a chance, you’re old enough to dance

[hide][/hide]
Wow, that middle blood elf is terrifying. Glowing red eyes are way worse than glowing green eyes. Submitter Erifia of [hide]Heavens Darkness[/hide] on Madoran (US-H) writes that her guild recently celebrated its birthday, and the officers decided to throw a disco party in Exodar to celebrate. From left to right, blood elves [hide]Doomswrath[/hide], [hide]Acoaria[/hide], [hide]Annakerie[/hide], [hide]Chellnvath[/hide], and [hide]Veccio[/hide] all descended on da club to smush the night away. Wearing that heavy armor has tired the boys out, but the ladies are ready to stay up late.

The Queue: Riding this joke ’til the tires go bald

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

The Queue is now in order! We all know that Samwise Pandas Club threw a party the other day and not one of us was invited. Now what do you say if we form a new club and call it the … He-Man Panda Haters Club?

Now I think we oughta have a president. Now, the man we elect must be the worst panda hater of us all. I nominate … myself. Because [hide]I hate pandas[/hide].

Gutrot asked:

Alex I think you write the Queue on Monday right? The other writers have speculated about Mists of Panderia but you haven’t except for your panda hate. What do you expect to see?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Riding this joke ’til the tires go bald[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Riding this joke ’til the tires go bald[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 11:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: The Last Marine Murloc

The background for this machinima goes something like this: The last murloc marine is sent to Azeroth to [hide]kill all the things[/hide]. However, despite his fearsome countenance and the powered armor that makes him a one-man army, the tiny murloc is no match for Deathwing. It all ends with a burp.

CrazyPlusPlus did an astounding good job with this video. The animation and graphics are entertaining and tone-perfect for the joke, and the movie doesn’t drag the punchline out to ridiculous lengths. There’s a lot to be said for a quick and effective joke instead of a long, drawn-out comedy.

Over all, [hide]The Last Marine Murloc[/hide] was fun, and I hope CrazyPlusPlus continues to put out more machinima movies.

Interested in the wide world of [hide]machinima[/hide]? We have new movies every weekday here on [hide]WoW Moviewatch[/hide]! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at [hide]moviewatch@wowinsider.com[/hide].
