Addon Spotlight: Transmogrification made easy with MogIt

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

[hide]Patch 4.3[/hide] might be coming sooner than we think, with this past week’s torrent of information about the upcoming content, [hide]Dragon Soul[/hide]. With it comes [hide]transmogrification[/hide], a new in-game system designed to let players have some flexibility and customization options when it comes to what armor they are wearing. Your stats will stay the same, but the look of your items can be changed over and over again. I’m a big fan of transmogrification and enjoy throwing together new armor sets and outfits in anticipation of this new feature.

Is there a way to make cataloging, wish-listing, and creating outfits even easier? Oh, you bet there is, through the wonderful world of addons. This week’s workhorse is MogIt, your one-stop shop for creating outfits and checking out what gear looks like, creating a wishlist of gear to collect, and more. If you’re nuts for transmogrification, then MogIt needs to be in your addon arsenal.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: Transmogrification made easy with MogIt[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Add-Ons[/hide], [hide]AddOn Spotlight[/hide][hide]Addon Spotlight: Transmogrification made easy with MogIt[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 15:00:00 EST. WoW Rookie: Getting into Firelands PUGs

New around here? [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide] has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the [hide]WoW Rookie Guide[/hide]. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

Chris wrote in to me with this question:

I haven’t been able to get into successful Firelands raid groups very often, because I only have a 5/7 achievement on Blackrock, where almost everyone either demands a 6/7 achievement or gives up after repeated wipes. On my old server, Stormscale, it was even worse — Firelands PUGs were practically non-existent. No successful raiding guild seems to have space for a mage, and when I stepped in as leader for the second raid group in my current guild, people stopped showing up!

How can I find a guild or PUG that’ll take me as I am, and where I’ll have a decent chance of killing Domo and Rag? I don’t want to switch to playing a tank or healer as my main, since it’d put me back to square one in both skill and gear.

While this level of raiding is a bit beyond the standard rookie level, it’s definitely a problem that many rookies face while trying to get into raiding. I wanted to cover it here instead of having someone field it in [hide]Ready Check[/hide], because I think this is the kind of information and strategy that will be important to new players trying to get into progression.

(Note that I don’t mean imply that Chris is new or anything like that; sounds like he’s totally on the good part of the curve. But still, this is good advice for rookies.)[hide]Continue reading WoW Rookie: Getting into Firelands PUGs[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]WoW Rookie: Getting into Firelands PUGs[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST. BlizzCon preview sale opens at 10 a.m. Friday for virtual ticket holders

BlizzCon’s [hide]merchandise preview sale[/hide] has been going on for BlizzCon ticket holders for the past week, with lots of fun items. Mysteriously, the official BlizzCon T-shirts have absent artwork, signaling big announcements at the main keynote for the event. [hide]Virtual ticket holders[/hide] will be granted access to the BlizzCon merchandise preview sale Friday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m. Pacific. All you have to do is log into the Battle.net account that you purchased your virtual ticket under, [hide]hit the Blizzard store[/hide], and you have early access to all of the BlizzCon official merchandise for the 2011 convention.

Probably the biggest surprise is the lack of T-shirt artwork for the official BlizzCon T-shirt, signaling a big, secret announcement that is important enough to revolve the entire convention around. New WoW expansion? Most likely. Cool new artwork to add to a shirt? That’s a pretty big deal. Virtual ticket holders will want to get in on the sale quickly, as many items sell out quickly. The store will see you virtual ticket holders tomorrow.

Check out our gallery of some of the items available this year at the preview sale.

The OverAchiever: Wrapping up Mountain O’ Mounts

Every Thursday, [hide]The Overachiever[/hide] shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, we find ourselves gleefully counting the inhabitants of our private stables.

Greetings, folks. After last week’s tour through the [hide]2011 Brewfest[/hide], we’re going to wrap up our [hide]Mountain O’ Mounts[/hide] series today with a few ill-tempered complaints from WoW Insider’s resident cheapskate, and then turn to … well, that part’s up to you. I have a lot of different OverAchievers I would like to do, but no particular preference as to which we’ll do next. There are several popular series and guides from Wrath of the Lich King that I would like to update — among others, I’m interested in revisiting [hide]evil achievements[/hide], [hide]entertaining achievements[/hide], [hide]tabards[/hide], and [hide]feats of strength[/hide] — but we still haven’t done Molten Front achievements, and I’ve been getting a lot of requests to do a [hide]Littlest Pet Shop[/hide] guide since that was added to the game.

In the grand tradition of lazy writers everywhere, I’m going to let you pick!

WoW Insider @ BlizzCon 2011: Mat and Fox’s contract rider

BlizzCon is going to be a huge event later in October, but that event only begins on Friday, Oct. 21. Lame! Thursday night before the convention, WoW Insider is teaming up with [hide]Wowhead[/hide], [hide]Tankspot[/hide], and tons of sponsors to bring you the biggest and bestest pre-BlizzCon party at the Anabella Hotel.

A big party needs some big personalities in charge. I myself ([hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide]) will be cohosting the live event with my friend, colleague, and ice cream buddy (it’s exactly what it sounds like) [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide], famous for writing something about priests. Well, we’re big personalities over here at WoW Insider, and with big personalities come big contract riders for stuff we need available for hosting this shindig. I present to you now the Mat and Fox Hosting Duties Contract Rider. You better get your budget-approving pen out, Mr. Dan O’Halloran, because this list is extensive. If you want a good show, you have to pay up.[hide]Continue reading WoW Insider @ BlizzCon 2011: Mat and Fox’s contract rider[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide], [hide]BlizzCon[/hide][hide]WoW Insider @ BlizzCon 2011: Mat and Fox’s contract rider[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 20:00:00 EST. Know Your Lore: The Watchers and Shadow Wardens

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Spoilers for [hide]Wolfheart[/hide] in the post below.

The Wardens, watchers, jailers, guardians of Night Elf society for 10,000 years, have been through much in the past decade. From once-trusted former members of the Temple of Elune, they took up the supposedly eternal duty of guarding their race’s greatest traitor, only to be killed by their own leader for performing the duty appointed to them. The survivors of Tyrande’s attack then found themselves buried alive in the crumbling remains of Suramar as it was collapsed by Illidan, their former captive and target of their manhunt.

When Maiev Shadowsong returned from her captivity in Outland as a prisoner of the same Betrayer she and her Wardens had spent millennia holding themselves, she rebuilt the order. This renaissance for the Wardens was short-lived; Maiev’s new Watchers were loyal to Maiev first. Despite the results of Maiev’s actions and her abrupt departure from Night Elf society, there was still a need for Wardens when the forces of Ragnaros the Firelord made war on Mount Hyjal.

Now the Shadow Wardens, led by Saynna Stormrunner, attempt to make up for Maiev’s betrayal and help lead the defense of Hyjal by taking part in the counteroffensive that brings the war to the Firelands’ Molten Front. For an organization with so long a history, to be nearly wiped out twice and find your loyalties cast into question rankles. Yet the Wardens endure for one reason: Someone has to be the dagger in the shadows.[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: The Watchers and Shadow Wardens[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: The Watchers and Shadow Wardens[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Classifieds: Calling all game scholars

[hide]The [/hide][hide]Classifieds[/hide] brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.

The librarian guild [hide]Where is the library[/hide] on Saurfang (US-A) is doing something unique and interesting. On Nov. 17, they will meet in the Ironforge library to talk about cognition and learning in MMOs. Check out what they have to say about it:

18 November 9.00am (Australian Eastern Summer time) [hide]Crystle Martin[/hide] will be talking about cognition and learning in MMOs and the constellation of information that surround them, focusing on topics of literacy including information literacy. She is the lead project assistant for the [hide]PopCosmo research group[/hide] led by [hide]Constance Steinkuehler[/hide] and a member of [hide]Games+Learning+Society[/hide].

You can read more about this effort, part of a regular series of talks for library professionals on gaming in libraries, on the group’s [hide]event page[/hide]. It’s definitely worth taking the time to attend the discussion. Good luck to Where is the library on getting a good showing!

Ol’ Grumpy and the Goblet of Firelands adjustments

Hello. I’m Ol’ Grumpy. You may remember me from such posts as [hide]Ol’ Grumpy’s first week with Patch 4.1[/hide], [hide]Ol’ Grumpy’s guide to player reeducation[/hide], or perhaps [hide]Ol’ Grumpy’s guide to outdated content and you[/hide]. As my name suggests, I am a hilariously old and crotchety curmudgeon who probably has forgotten more about hating things than you’ve ever known. Seriously, I hate everything, especially the things I enjoy. It’s why I’m called Ol’ Grumpy and not Ol’ Smiley.

So, this time I’ve been called back into service to talk about the [hide]recent Firelands adjustments[/hide], or as I like to call them, significant nerfs. Quite frankly, my take on these is a bit more nuanced than the last time, so I sadly won’t get to grump around as much as I prefer. Frankly, there are several key differences between this series of nerfs and the ones to T11 content that make the situation a little less cut-and-dried.

This time, both normal and heroic content is being nerfed. Last time, normal mode fights were nerfed across the board, but heroic content was left unchanged so that people who wanted to experience it at the original challenge level could do so. This is a decision I lauded at the time, and I find the different implementation this time kind of baffling.

We got half as much time with tier 12 as we did tier 11 before the changes. Now, to some degree this isn’t an entirely fair comparison because we also had to level from 80 to 85 before we got a chance to do tier 11, and in addition there were 13 total fights in tier 11 content plus a bonus heroic only encounter. Tier 12 has eight, seven in Firelands and one in Baradin Hold that barely even counts. But it still seems very early to nerf this content.

These are some serious nerfs to content that is still relevant. Unlike the T11 changes, which took place as T12 dropped, these fights are still the fights that we’re all doing. There’s nothing to replace them, no place for the players who have done it before the nerfs to go if they want to stay on the cutting edge of content. This is the cutting edge, and it’s now between 15% and 25% less sharp.

All of this adds up to my being not exactly angry or disappointed but very much confused by the reasoning for these changes. And it makes me wonder: Did fewer people clear Firelands than Blizzard was expecting? What’s happening with this raid tier, and just how close are we to patch 4.3? Probably closer than I expected a week ago.[hide]Continue reading Ol’ Grumpy and the Goblet of Firelands adjustments[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Hotfixes[/hide][hide]Ol’ Grumpy and the Goblet of Firelands adjustments[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST. Spiritual Guidance: The sorta-official shadow priest census

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Spiritual Guidance[/hide] for [hide]discipline[/hide], [hide]holy[/hide] and [hide]shadow[/hide] priests. On Wednesdays, shadow priesting expert [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide]’s comes from out of the darkness to bask in your loving adoration. Spiritual Guidance has been edited for broadcast.

Usually, I’m uninterested in hearing about anything but how good-looking or awesome I am. I tend to make an exception on topics relating to shadow priesting though. It’s a fun spec in Cataclysm, and I sure hope it stays a fun, competitive spec in the Pandatown expansion too.

Thankfully, there’s something we can all do to guarantee the future of shadow priesting. Blizzard has [hide]started a thread[/hide] on the official Blizzard forums specifically soliciting feedback from priests of all stripes. They ask some important things of us: what we think makes shadow priesting fun (and not fun), what we think of our rotation, our wish list, and what spells we use the least. The answers will be read by the development team and used to mold the shadow priest of 2012-13.

Given the importance of the thread, I thought it’d be interesting to go through the responses there so far, share a few with you, and give my own answers and reactions. Today, it’s all about where shadow priests are and where shadow priests should be going.[hide]Continue reading Spiritual Guidance: The sorta-official shadow priest census[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Priest[/hide], [hide](Priest) Spiritual Guidance[/hide][hide]Spiritual Guidance: The sorta-official shadow priest census[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST.
