Addon Spotlight: Slackers, beware! RSC is on to you

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

Are you ready to pull? The ready check says you’ve got the green light, people look ready, and your current raid boss stands in front of you, cruising for a bruising every moment you wait before initiating the fight. Stop. Is everyone flasked? Did everyone eat the feast? Who pre-potted on a progression encounter? Has someone dropped a repair bot that was not noticed? Are you sure that you’re ready to pull?

There is little more annoying than raiders giving half their effort to the team effort, 10- or 25-man raiding. It’s game time, people! Stop slacking! We’ve got bosses to kick in the loot bags and gear to grab. Maybe with a little help from RaidSlackCheck, you can whip your cadre of nerds into shape and get these fights down at a quicker pace.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: Slackers, beware! Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU?

Every Thursday, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Scattered Shots[/hide] for [hide]beast mastery[/hide], [hide]marksmanship[/hide] and [hide]survival[/hide] hunters. Frostheim of [hide]Warcraft Hunters Union[/hide] uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to [hide]Frostheim[/hide].

Today’s header video is a sneak peek at the hunter class in patch 7.3, after the implementation of dual wielding and after minimum range is finally removed from the game. It also looks like we get a melee disarm, which I agree would be nice. Pillar humping is clearly still a vital arena strategy, however. This look at the awesomeness to come should help soften the pain of the unpleasant subject of today’s column.

The hunter pet stance changes blow.

There’s just no sugarcoating it; the changes to pet stances simply make our lives worse than they were before. If you want to hand me a petition to repeal the changes, I will happily sign it. However, it seems likely the changes are something that we’re just going to have to put up with, like ads to [hide]buy gold online[/hide], fake [hide]sparkle pony[/hide] phishing emails, and the continued [hide]existence of elves[/hide]. So, too, must we apparently suck it up and deal with increasingly unruly pets that need a stronger guiding hand.

Join me after the cut as we discuss the changes in more depth and ask the question of what is to be done about it. Do we hunters try to wail up a paladin-like storm of QQ in hopes of effecting a change, or is it something deliberate and we just have to HTFU?[hide]Continue reading Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU[/hide]?Filed under: [hide]Hunter[/hide], [hide](Hunter) Scattered Shots[/hide][hide]Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU[/hide]? originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics

New around here? [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide] has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the [hide]WoW Rookie Guide[/hide]. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

We all know that you should do heroic 5-mans before you start raiding. It’s more than just a maxim or saying; you need the gear, experience, and practice. But a reader recently mailed me and asked:

I’ve only been trying to do endgame for the last few months, since I didn’t have time while working a full time job. Now, I am trying to learn how to raid by doing heroic dungeons. It’s going pretty rough and I’m getting some pretty good gear but I have a question.

Ignoring the gear itself, what am I getting out of these dungeons? Do raid bosses actually work anything like heroic bosses?

It’s a fair question, and I can see how someone new to the endgame might feel frustrated at not being in the «real» game. The bad news is that raid bosses often do work a little differently; some tactics and maneuvers that exist in raiding have no correlation to 5-man dungeons. For example, you never swap tanks in 5-man instances because you only have one tank at a time.

But all is not lost. It might actually surprise you how many raid boss tactics mirror 5-man encounters. Let’s take a look at some of the T11 bosses and which 5-mans might help prepare you for them. (We’re looking at T11 bosses because, admittedly, you shouldn’t go straight from 5-man heroics to the Firelands.)[hide]Continue reading WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 17:00:00 EST. 15 Minutes of Fame: Come one, come all to the astounding Traveling Museum of Debris

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide].

Back in October, we profiled triple-threat collector Drrum’s coordinated [hide]armor, pet, and mount collections[/hide], meticulously assembled and screenshot in complementary in-game settings. Last week, we chatted with collector Moonjade of Twisting Nether (US-A), who focuses on items somehow [hide]linked to game lore[/hide]. This week, we complete our trifecta of collectors with an interview with a player who’s assembled an actual in-game museum — yup, curator-led tours and all — of unusual gray items and assorted oddities. Now, we get crazy emails all the time here at WoW Insider about all sorts of weird things that’ve been found in game … but man, I’ve never even heard of some of this stuff!

Pestle, who’s also GM of Infinite Asylum on The Scryers (US-A), manages the massive, multi-bank collection via Riplington E. Winchester III, the museum’s intrepid gnomish curator character. The list of random items that she sent me is so long that there’s literally no reader-friendly way to display it here (let alone the fact that it would take days to slap Wowhead links on all of it); we’ll stream it for you in paragraph form just after the jump. For a visual idea of the scope of this massive collection, click through the gallery below before joining us to chat with its curator after the break.

The Classifieds: Civilized leveling while wearing top hats

[hide]The Classifieds[/hide] brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.

People constantly seek new and interesting ways to level up. The idea of leveling as a unique snowflake is attractive, and finding a particular quirk for your own gameplay adds a lot of depth to the game. We have another entry to the tome of interesting leveling:

I decided I wanted to do something similar with my 9th character I’d level to 85. I made a Warlock named Seduceyu on my main server, Khadgar, and leveled it all the way from 12 (when i got the worgen top hat) to 85 with the hat on the whole time. Was wondering if I was the 1st one to ever do this, or if there is a way to find out if I am the 1st to do this?

Well, intrepid readers, how about it? Do any of you know someone who leveled wearing a top hat the entire time? I find this particularly interesting, since I’m one of those folks who consider worgen who earned their [hide]top hats[/hide] to be the true Gilneans.

In other news, [hide]WowDataTooltip[/hide] is putting together an exciting internet gadget for WoW fans. Using the [hide]new API release from Blizzard[/hide], the tooltip displays character information when you hover over a link to Battle.net. That’s some pretty exciting stuff for the future.[hide]Continue reading The Classifieds: Civilized leveling while wearing top hats[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]The Classifieds: Civilized leveling while wearing top hats[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 17:00:00 EST. Encrypted Text: Rogue tips and tricks for Firelands, part 1

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Encrypted Text[/hide] for [hide]assassination[/hide], [hide]combat[/hide] and [hide]subtlety[/hide] rogues. [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with your [hide]favorite ganking stories[/hide] or dictionary definitions of the word «griefing.»

The best part of playing a subtlety rogue has always been [hide]Shadowstep[/hide]. Warriors have been blessed with [hide]Intercept[/hide] since day one, and feral druids have [hide]Kitty Leap[/hide] built into their default specs. Rogues, on the other hand, are forced into subtlety to match the mobility of our leather-wearing brethren. Shadowstep could be such a powerful tool for maintaining our uptime in raid situations, if only every rogue had access to it. Subtlety rogues don’t want Shadowstep to become baseline, because then subtlety loses half of its attractiveness.

Even without Shadowstep, rogues have plenty of buttons to push in Firelands. There are plenty of adds to test our AOE potency, utility encounters that stress precision instead of damage, and plenty of nasty spells to interrupt. While we’re not fighting against [hide]Lucifron[/hide] and [hide]Golemagg[/hide] again, we can use our experience against Ragnaros’ former entourage to help us combat the new crew hanging out around his castle. Just remember to have your [hide]Volcanic Armor[/hide] and [hide]Helm of Fire [/hide]equipped; I hear Rag likes to keep his thermostat set to «[hide]crispy[/hide].»[hide]Continue reading Encrypted Text: Rogue tips and tricks for Firelands, part 1[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Rogue[/hide], [hide](Rogue) Encrypted Text[/hide][hide]Encrypted Text: Rogue tips and tricks for Firelands, part 1[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. Review: Healbot now available for your iPad or iPhone

There is no shortage of World of Warcraft applications out there for your iPhone or iPad device. You can check and optimize your gear with [hide]Mr. Robot[/hide]; you can chat and play the auction house with the official [hide]Mobile Armory[/hide]; and you can protect your account from hackers with the [hide]Mobile Authenticator[/hide].

This week, you can add another app to that list: [hide]Healbot[/hide], a free, stand-alone iOS game that simulates World of Warcraft boss fights from a healer’s perspective. Your party takes damage; it’s your job to heal through it. If the boss hits zero before your party does, you win. Just like real life! Well, real life in Azeroth, anyway.

If the name app’s name sounds familiar, that’s intentional. According to the game’s developers, Healbot is «based on the mechanics of the Healbot mod in WoW.» But how does this simulation stack up against the real thing? And is it worth your dear, sweet, precious time?[hide]Continue reading Review: Healbot now available for your iPad or iPhone[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Add-Ons[/hide], [hide]Raid Rx (Raid Healing)[/hide][hide]Review: Healbot now available for your iPad or iPhone[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 19:00:00 EST. Paragon releases heroic Ragnaros 25-man kill video

Paragon earned the high honor of [hide]world first heroic Ragnaros[/hide] kill, downing the Firelord after over 400 attempts on his fight. Heroic mode encounters add something new and difficult to the mix, but it is rare that we see an entirely new phase to an encounter. Paragon’s heroic Ragnaros kill video shows the final stage of the fight, in which Ragnaros submerges into his lava pool and emerges at full strength, where his new legs allow movement all over the encounter room.

The final stage of the fight involves Archdruid [hide]Hamuul Runetotem[/hide], [hide]Malfurion Stormrage[/hide], and [hide]Cenarius[/hide] assisting the players in dealing with the entirely new mechanics this new heroic mode phase presents. If you’ve been trying Ragnaros or have killed him, you already have experienced the hilarious [hide]Living Meteor[/hide] ability. In this new phase, meteors must be kited over patches of ice on the ground to freeze them and then players must DPS down meteors to control the amount up at any time. Players are also frantically running around extinguishing ground fires and trapping Ragnaros in roots on the ground. All in all, it looks incredibly fun and challenging, and it’s very nice to see Ragnaros putting his new legs to good use kicking the crap out of guilds across the world.

My favorite part of the video has to be the end, with the custom death animation for Ragnaros. Watch until the very end — it’s worth it. Congratulations again to DREAM Paragon for their heroic first kill and for the awesome video of the accomplshment.
