Leader short stories continue with Varian Wrynn: Blood of Our Fathers

The latest of the leader short stories is now live on the official site. [hide]Varian Wrynn: Blood of Our Fathers[/hide] continues the story of Wrynn where Wolfheart left off. It is Remembrance Day in Stormwind, and King Wrynn is expected to deliver a speech while still embroiled in the struggles of rebuilding the city after Deathwing’s devastating attack. In between, Varian can’t help but remember his father and the circumstances surrounding his death — and his continuing struggle to balance himself along with his relationship with his son.

Anduin features pretty heavily in this story, which continues to explore the somewhat tumultuous relationship between father and son. Anduin’s been spending his time learning the arts of the priesthood. When Anduin returns to Stormwind just in time for Remembrance Day, will he be able to reconcile with his father, and prove himself a capable son? Will Varian accept his son for who he is, not some version of what Varian would like him to be? Check out the [hide]full story[/hide] by E. Daniel Arey on the official site.

World of Wardrobe: Traipsing around Tempest Keep for tier 5

Heading back to pick up some awesome armor sets from vanilla WoW or that dazzling weapon that’ll have your enemies cowering in fear? [hide]Transmogrification[/hide] makes it possible — and [hide]World of Wardrobe[/hide] shows you how.

The Burning Crusade was an expansion of extremes. Each zone in Outland was drastically different from the next; each dungeon was just as diverse. The staggering difference between regular dungeons and the newly added heroic dungeons was the bane of many early leveling players in the expansion, though the heroic dungeons were nerfed over time. So too were the raids — and tier 5 had two of the most drastically different raid dungeons that anyone had seen.

While [hide]Serpentshrine Cavern[/hide] was the aquatic themed underwater home to Lady Vashj, countless Naga, and other aquatic creatures, The Eye was far on the other end of the spectrum. The Naaru ship Tempest Keep was divided into four sections, three dungeons and the raid instance where Kael’thas Sunstrider reigned supreme. Full of crystalline Naaru architecture, the zone had a shining, unusual, and decidedly alien flavor to it. It was hard to say which of the two raid dungeons was more difficult, but it’s much easier to make that distinction today — The Eye is by far the more challenging of the two zones, especially for those looking to pick up the last few pieces of tier 5.

Around Azeroth: Darkness on the edge of town

[hide][/hide]
Hey, there’s nothing in the rules that says you can’t use Photoshop for your screenshots. [hide]Edstrom[/hide] of [hide]Blackmist Brigade[/hide] on Darkmoon Faire (EU-A) has taken yet another portrait of one of his guildmates, this time of newly returned paladin Vangarde posing on the Stormwind rooftops. I can’t tell if he’s blowing a kiss or inspecting his fingernails for dirt, but he certainly looks dashing.

Breakfast Topic: How do you decide which race to roll?

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Each time you create a new character, you are faced with a few crucial decisions. Which class? Which race? And perhaps most importantly, which hairstyle? When I started my most recent alt, I debated with myself over the best choice of race for quite some time. Here are some of the factors that crossed my mind:

Class considerations Before Cataclysm, if you wanted to play a druid on the Alliance, rolling a Night Elf was the only option; likewise, Blood Elves were the only ones who could be paladins on the Horde side. Selecting a class first often makes the race decision easier — unless, of course, you select the warrior class, in which case you won’t get any help.

Pure aesthetics Who wants to look at cow butt for hours on end? ‘Nuff said.

Affinity Perhaps the backstory of a particular race captivates you, reminding you of your own journey or struggles. Perhaps it’s easier to put yourself in the shoes of a character who howls at the full moon or eats the corpses of the dead for a quick pick-me-up.

Racials If you plan to min-max with your character, you may want to select a race with a bonus to stats that actually matter for the character’s class. Likewise, it could be helpful to go with a race that has bonus skill points in the profession you hope to learn. Some advantages are just a matter of convenience (e.g., [hide]instant flight form[/hide]). And let’s not forget cool effects like [hide]Rocket Jump[/hide]!

Resemblance When you still can’t decide, I suggest rolling a character of a race that looks more like you do. Got lots of back hair? So do Worgen and Tauren. Long ears? You must be an Elf or Troll.

Which factors did you consider when choosing race? Which of them is most important and why?

The Queue: Healing is ________ since the start of Cataclysm

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky ([hide]@adamholisky[/hide]), senior editor at WoW Insider, will be your host today.

I always loved fill-in-the-blank questions in high school and college, mainly because they presented me a golden opportunity to bull-jive my way through a test. There is such thing as «right enough» that the professor just relents and gives you credit, and by Jove, that leads us to our first question …

Junikins asked:

I started to heal a lot at the start of the expansion, but I quit since it wasn’t fun. Too easy to wipe a group with simple lag, and everyone always blamed the healer. Has it gotten any better?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Healing is ________ since the start of Cataclysm[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Healing is ________ since the start of Cataclysm[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 11:00:00 EST. 15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide].

Do your friends, family or coworkers still cling to old-fashioned notions of video games as the provenance of social misfits and those who can’t stay focused on the demands and rewards of real life? Take heart — there are professionals out there who understand the gaming perspective and are working to help normalize gaming as mainstream pastime it has actually become. One of the many leading the charge is WoW player and master’s-level psychology student Erinia of Cenarion Circle, whose track toward becoming a licensed mental health counselor includes helping both players and other mental health professionals understand the pulls, demands, and concerns of players who enjoy games like WoW.

Erinia has discovered that magic sweet spot where work, play, and a passion for all of it come together. «Am I an exceptional player?» Erinia asks. «Probably not, but WoW has opened up a lot of doors for me in the real world.» We would accuse the lady of understatement here; click past the break for more on counseling, World of Warcraft, and new perspectives on how to help troubled people — who happen to enjoy playing games — understand themselves.[hide]Continue reading 15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Interviews[/hide], [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide][hide]15 Minutes of Fame: Counseling people who happen to play games[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 13:00:00 EST.
