Want spirit cloth gear from Firelands? Bad news …

If you’re a [hide]priest[/hide], you might have noticed that [hide]patch 4.2[/hide]’s Firelands has very, very few pieces of cloth gear with spirit on them. You may have thought this was a bug or perhaps an oversight, since it means that it’ll take you considerably longer to gear up in this tier due to having to use valor points for non-set pieces, buy BoEs, or wait for Hyjal rewards instead of getting lucky with random drops.

Well, Blizzard heard your cries and has responded! It’s not good news, though.

Cloth gear had the spirit burnt off in FL

Stat balance on gear should be looked at via much more than just boss loot tables. We consider reputation gear, tailor gear, Valor gear and the tier sets when examining what’s available to you. If you wish, you can have Spirit on every slot but your belt (which can still be reforged). The priest tier set has Spirit on all 5 slots.

Having said that, the mindset that only cloth with spirit is priest healer gear (and cloth with no spirit is never priest healer gear) is a mindset to be resisted. If that is allowed to set in, then all the fun of looking at a potential new piece of gear and deciding for yourself whether it is an upgrade for you is removed entirely.

Along those lines, something to keep in mind is that there is more to improving the healing you do in cloth than simply stacking spirit. As you increase spell power, haste, and crit, and your tank increases health, armor and avoidance, boss damage negates less of your mana in the first place.

[hide]source[/hide]

So, no, there isn’t any cloth gear hiding. No bugs. No oversights. It was a calculated decision to force priests to reexamine their gearing strategies. Blizzard is right in that a gearing strategy of «stack this one stat forever» is pretty dangerous (hello, armor penetration), of course, but having only select items with spirit on them actually reduces your gearing options, since you can’t switch a tier piece out for another non-tier item that doesn’t exist.

Wait, I have an idea! Just let priests wear spell plate. That solves everyone’s problems.

The news is already rolling out for the upcoming [hide]WoW Patch 4.2[/hide]! Preview the [hide]new Firelands raid[/hide], marvel at the [hide]new legendary staff[/hide], and get the inside scoop on [hide]new quest hubs[/hide] — plus [hide]new tier 12 armor[/hide]!

Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron, part 4

Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? [hide]C. Christian Moore[/hide], multiple rank 1 [hide]Gladiator[/hide], examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more in [hide]Blood Sport[/hide].

This has been one of our longer series here at Blood Sport, but that shouldn’t really come as a surprise to my regular readers — I love telling stories.

This week, we’ll be covering a hodgepodge of different player types I’ve encountered throughout my time in arena. It’s amazing to me the diversity of players who at look to high-level arena for both a challenge and entertainment. I’ll try to stay away from teammates that I’ve already talked about. Shifting Perspectives: Haste and you — a guide to not wanting to kill yourself

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Shifting Perspectives[/hide] for [hide]cat[/hide], [hide]bear[/hide], [hide]restoration[/hide] and [hide]balance[/hide] druids. This Tuesday, we had to Google the Goldilocks story because we kept getting it wrong.

Once upon a time, a blogger ventured into a magical forest in search of a stat known as haste. In the forest, there was a cottage where a family of three bears — Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear — all lived. So the blogger —

«Hey, wait a minute,» said the bears. «We don’t care about haste. Haste is terrible. Clear off.»

So the blogger left the bears’ cottage and ventured deeper into the forest, eventually finding a family of trees, which was interesting insofar as the forest was itself comprised of trees, and by all rights, this made no sense. Like the bears, the trees were a family unit with the requisite Papa Tree, Mama Tree, and Baby Tree. Fortunately for the blogger, the trees were out on a walk (just work with me here) when she arrived, and she sat down to sample the dinner they had left behind.

«Haste!» said the blogger, delighted at her discovery. «The trees like haste!»

She sat at Papa Tree’s plate. «He has too much haste,» she said. She sat at Mama Tree’s plate. «She has too little haste,» she said. She sat at Baby Tree’s plate. «This haste is just right!» she said and gobbled it up.

«There’s no such thing as too much haste,» said Papa Tree outside the window, observing the loss of his offspring’s dinner. «And do you have [hide]Dark Intent[/hide]? I think you’ll find that my wife’s haste is — «

«You can have too much haste,» argued Mama Tree. «How much do you have right now? Didn’t you just past the breakpoint for a ninth tick of [hide]Wild Growth[/hide]? Why aren’t you focusing on mastery? It — «

And so the blogger sprinted out of the magical forest and threw herself in front of a magical train, sobbing on her way to mortal oblivion, «I was told that there would be no math in this expansion!»[hide]Continue reading Shifting Perspectives: Haste and you — a guide to not wanting to kill yourself[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Druid[/hide], [hide](Druid) Shifting Perspectives[/hide][hide]Shifting Perspectives: Haste and you — a guide to not wanting to kill yourself[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. MMO Roundup: Titan will be for casuals

Sometimes you’d like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It’s not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site [hide]Massively[/hide] can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around — past, present and future.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]Blizzard’s Titan a «casual» MMO[/hide]

Arvind Bhatia is quoted on the game industry website Gamasutra as saying that Blizzard’s product pipeline includes «expansion packs for StarCraft and World of Warcraft, a new Diablo game, [and] a new casual MMO.» That casual MMO is of course Titan, the secretive WoW followup that has reportedly gobbled up Blizzard’s most experienced designers.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]EA quotes «200 hours of gameplay per class» in SWTOR[/hide]

For most single-player video games, eight to 20 hours of gameplay is currently considered «sufficient.» For Star Wars: The Old Republic, those numbers are merely a prologue to the main event. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Electronic Arts’ Frank Gibeau said that players should expect around 200 hours of core gameplay per class, not including side activities like PVP and raiding.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]CCP responds to EVE Online’s monoclegate[/hide]

This has been a difficult week for EVE Online developer CCP Games, with massive controversy hitting the media surrounding what should have been a momentous expansion release. Unfortunately, simple complaints over some very overpriced microtransactions soon escalated into outright panic and even in-game riots with the release of an internal company newsletter and subsequent internal email casting doubt on the game’s vanity-only microtransaction policy and its development direction in general.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]Not So Massively[/hide]

If you’re looking for a different sort of multiplayer gameplay than what MMOs provide, Massively’s Not So Massively has you covered. Check it out for all of the latest MOBA and other multiplayer news.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]Massively Speaking Episode 154[/hide]

Massively Speaking, Massively’s MMO podcast, returns this week with Shawn and Rubi catching up on the week of MMO news insanity. Topics include World of Warcraft’s new extended free trial, Guild Wars 2’s underwater combat and dungeons, EVE Online’s macrotransaction explosion, and the upcoming shutdown of Star Wars Galaxies.

[hide][/hide]

[hide]Massively’s week in review[/hide]

Don’t let WoW Insider do all of the talking when it comes to Massively’s best content of the week. The Massively staff themselves have picked out what they think is the best content their site has to offer, in their own weekly roundup.

Around Azeroth: Nom, nom, nom

[hide][/hide]
The recent devastating changes to the woods of Ashenvale and Darkshore have forced the furbolgs into a difficult position. Pushed out of their native lands, the furry bears are becoming an urban pest. In this screenshot, [hide]Greyshank[/hide] of [hide]Friends of Pengu[/hide] on Durotan (US-A) meets an errant furbolg with malign intentions in the bank.

Totem Talk: Restoration shaman tips on healing Lord Rhyolith and Beth’tilac

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Totem Talk[/hide] for [hide]elemental[/hide], [hide]enhancement[/hide] and [hide]restoration[/hide] shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and co-host of the [hide]Raid Warning[/hide] podcast), shows you how.

Last week, we had a lovely little chat about [hide]tracking your cooldowns[/hide] and how they have become much more important than in the previous tiers of content. Some great addon suggestions were made in the comments, and as a result, I’m even giving [hide]TellMeWhen[/hide] a try this week in raiding.

This week, I thought we would talk about something involving a considerable amount of fire. If you’re a raiding restoration shaman, chances are good that this past week you got to set foot in the land of fire and giants that are set on fire. I’m talking, of course, about the [hide]Firelands raid[/hide]. Healing in the new instance has been both fun and hectic all at the same time, and I’ve personally been having quite a bit of fun learning the encounters. Besides, what better way to fight fire than with the element of water! This week’s image is supplied by the wonderful [hide]MagicalMelonBall[/hide], inspired by my love of Indiana Jones and hatred of spiders.[hide]Continue reading Totem Talk: Restoration shaman tips on healing Lord Rhyolith and Beth’tilac[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide](Shaman) Totem Talk[/hide][hide]Totem Talk: Restoration shaman tips on healing Lord Rhyolith and Beth’tilac[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 09:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: What do you during Tuesday maintenance?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

While a good portion of WoW’s players hold down full-time jobs or are in school full time, there are those of us who work from home, are stay-at-home parents or have a rotating schedule and wind up with a Tuesday off. Unless it’s a patch day, everyone knows that come 5 a.m., regardless of whether you’re ready or not, you will be logging off for the morning. For people on the east coast like me, that usually means my morning and part of my afternoon.

What do you do if you’re home during Tuesday maintenance? When I know I’ll be home when the servers are down, I plan to spend the first half of my day taking care of things around the house and running any errands I might have. My daily routine doesn’t change much when Tuesday rolls around, aside from getting a few more things done. Having three high-strung dogs means lots of walking, throwing of the squeaky toys, and attacking the carpets with the Dyson vacuum. If there’s a movie I’ve been wanting to see for a while, I’ll pick it up and watch that after the dogs pass out. When the servers go down, I treat it like I would if I were taking a break for a few hours or a few days and take the opportunity to take care of my real-world obligations.

Do you plan your day around Tuesday maintenance if you know you will be home? What do you do while the servers are down?

Tuesday Morning Post: The week after

It’s been exactly one week since the launch of [hide]patch 4.2[/hide]. As we’ve all come to expect from the high-end raiding community, Ragnaros has already bit the dust time and time again on normal mode. As of today we’ll start to see legitimate hard mode kills, and it should be interesting to see which guild comes out on top this time around.

Most of us are content which much more humble progression, though. My guild finished the week at 3/7, having taken our usual Monday evening raid night off to celebrate some wacky thing called «the 4th of July.» I think it’s a holiday commemorating Gilneas shrugging off the hegemony of the Alliance of Lordaeron and striking out on their own? I’m not really sure, honestly.

Today’s maintenance will be ongoing for a few hours more as of this posting, so if you’re feeling particularly bored, don’t worry! WoW Insider had some great content this past week that you can catch up on today.[hide]Continue reading Tuesday Morning Post: The week after[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Realm Status[/hide], [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Tuesday Morning Post: The week after[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 07:00:00 EST.
