The Daily Quest: Tiers of disappointment

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

The new tier of raiding has been out for a little over a week now, along with the new dailies and quests. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve been settling into the routine of having dailies worth doing again and enjoying the general hectic atmosphere of the Molten Front and its endless spawns of angry, fire-related objects. On the other hand, I realized I haven’t even thought about the old tier of content since the patch hit. I wondered, briefly, what those old bosses do when there are no raiders around anymore and then realized it’s probably something similar to the video above.

Speaking of old tier, today we’ve got a blog post about how those old raids are doing now that Firelands is the hot new thing to be doing, as well as a couple of other posts with some interesting thoughts on game development.

[hide]Priest With A Cause[/hide] shares some impressions of the newly nerfed [hide]tier 11 raiding scene[/hide].

[hide]Life in Group 5[/hide] ponders the process of developing encounters with a [hide]fun factor that lasts[/hide].

[hide]Psychochild’s Blog[/hide] discusses the odd conflicts between designing [hide]fun and efficiency[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

The Classifieds: The subtlety of an all-rogue guild

[hide][/hide]
[hide]The Classifieds[/hide] brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.

This is a first for me. While I’ve seen lots of all-elf themed guilds, I’ve never seen an all-rogue guild. It sounds like a great time, but I’m not sure how they see through all that stealth at guild meetings:

Hey,

Thought I’d drop you a line to tell you about the guild I am in on The Venture Co (EU). It is an all-rogue RP/PVP guild which has been around almost since server start. I’ve been a member over 3 years now and we have over 50 unique players on the roster (we don’t allow alts) and most nights we have at least 5, and sometime 20 online which is pretty good for a primarily RP guild of only rogues on a low population server! It is headed by a female Forsaken, [hide]Anethrax[/hide], who leads and keeps her band of Horde assassins under tight control.

Obviously we don’t raid or run heroics etc. as a guild, but we run normal battlegrounds sometimes and do a lot of world PVP; we have good relationships (out of character at least!) with many Alliance RP guilds as well as Horde ones. We pride ourselves on including all levels in the what we do, as much as we can — especially when we hunt alliance. I would say that 90% of the PVP we do, we do in-character (i.e. roleplay).

If you want more info then I’ll be happy to give you the contact details of my guild leader, Anethrax, and I ran it past him before contacting you of course.

Cheers,

[hide]Arli[/hide]

Know Your Lore: The shu’halo

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

We talked about their [hide]origins[/hide] last week (although that was primarily speculation), and we’ve talked about their [hide]politics[/hide] and how they fit within the Horde. We’ve discussed [hide]Cairne[/hide] and his son [hide]Baine[/hide], the great leaders of their people, and [hide]Magatha[/hide], the greatest living villain. But what of the shu’halo, the tauren people themselves? Who are they?

The tauren today are in a very unusual position. They revere the Earthmother and yet are allied to people who stripmine her very flesh to plunder her resources, chop down her forests, and poison her creatures with plague. Former nomads, harried by enemies, they now reside in their ancestral homeland due to those same alliances. The Horde gave them much and now asks for much. For the tauren, the shu’halo, the debt owed when Thrall and his people helped them reach their promised land has never faded. But who were they before it?[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: The shu’halo[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: The shu’halo[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST. WoW Insider’s Guide to Occu’thar

Occu’thar is a deranged demon found within the western wing of the Baradin Hold raid instance. Released in [hide]patch 4.2[/hide], he offers a chance for both hardcore raiders and casual PUG players to get their tier 12 gloves and pants, as well as an assortment of Season 10 PVP gear. This is WoW Insider’s Guide to Occu’thar.

When you zone into the post-4.2 Baradin Hold, the first thing you’ll notice that last patch’s Demon Containment Unit trash have been deactivated. The now defunct Destroyed Containment Unit stand silent in the hallways, leaving room for you to engage this patch’s new trash, the [hide]Eyes of Occu’thar[/hide]. If you’ve learned anything from Cataclysm raiding, it should be that trash mobs will do everything in their power to kill you, and it’s in your raid’s best interest to be prepared. These optical oddities are no different.[hide]Continue reading WoW Insider’s Guide to Occu’thar[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide], [hide]Raid Guides[/hide][hide]WoW Insider’s Guide to Occu’thar[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: Epic Eats: Cataclysm

It’s been a while, but you should remember [hide]Bullworth[/hide] from the fan-favorite machinima series [hide]Raid Eats[/hide]. Bullworth is back with [hide]Epic Eats: Cataclysm[/hide], a tongue in cheek look at cooking changes all through the game.

Bullworth settled on the name Epic Eats because he wanted to expand beyond just raid food. While there are a lot of fun raid foods, WoW now offers a much more interesting variety of cooking recipes. Bullworth needed to expand his series so that he could address them all. Also, he felt the new name serves as a better homage to Good Eats.

Interested in the wide world of [hide]machinima[/hide]? We have new movies every weekday here on [hide]WoW Moviewatch[/hide]! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at [hide]moviewatch@wowinsider.com[/hide].

The Queue: Go away, Nozdormu, nobody likes you

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

Insert clever (but completely irrelevant) introductory paragraph here. Alternatively, insert tired and worn internet meme here, instead.

Thatacus asked:

I may have missed something but did something happen between WotLK and Firelands patch to free Nozdormu? I mean, the last time we saw him, he was no where to be found and fighting some Infinite Dragons and all of a sudden he’s showing up at the Mount Hyjal summit like nothing has happened. What’s going on here?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Go away, Nozdormu, nobody likes you[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Go away, Nozdormu, nobody likes you[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 11:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Up, up and away in my beautiful balloon

[hide][/hide]
[hide]Arugadh[/hide] of [hide]The Seekers of Truth[/hide] on Farstriders (US-A) writes, «First there was the draenei child trying to drown herself in the lake out back of Stormwind. Now another draenei child is trying to do herself in by having us gather her balloons so that she can tie herself to them and float way up above the spires of the cathedral. What happens when the balloons reach a certain depressurized altitude or runs into Flintlocke’s malfunctioning jet engine is anyone’s nightmare.»

Breakfast Topic: What type of player are you?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

When you ask someone what type of player he or she is, you usually get the answer «hardcore» or «casual.» Expanding on that, you might get «I’m a hardcore PVPer» or «I’m a casual raider.» Casual and hardcore can mean so many different things to so many people that it’s hard to pick just one or the other. A person who raids three nights a week might not see himself as a hardcore raider compared to the person who raids five nights a week. What about the person who doesn’t raid but has an army of alts? Is he casual because he logs on and does his own thing?

I don’t consider myself a casual or hardcore player. I’m the guy who has a crafting empire across his alts that I play frequently. I PVP when the mood strikes me, and while I haven’t raided any of the new content yet, I run Baradin Hold every week. You can blame the alts for the lack of raiding. Some days, I might spend an hour doing my dailies or putting auctions up, and another day, I might spend 8 hours in game with a break here and there. If I had to give myself a title for the type of player I am, I would say I’m a «frequent player.» A «serious player» doesn’t fit right; when I think of a serious player, I think of a high-ranking arena player or one of the top raiders on his or her server.

What type of player do you consider yourself? Do you log on once a week and do a few dailies? Maybe you log in every day and do all 25 dailies before raiding for a few hours.
