The Light and How to Swing It: Just how masterful can mastery healing get?

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Every Sunday, [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

Sometimes I feel like I can’t get away from [hide]Illuminated Healing[/hide]. Our holy paladin mastery has been receiving [hide]nonstop tweaks[/hide] since [hide]its introduction[/hide], and it’s always flirting with viability. Stats like haste and critical strike rating are predictable. I can draw up some formulas to show you how many extra ticks of [hide]Holy Radiance[/hide] you’ll receive at a given haste level. Mastery is much more nebulous than that, as its effectiveness depends entirely on the encounter and your healing assignment.

Everyone has some amount of mastery rating on their gear, and there’s even some passively built into our characters. While having a bit of mastery to make our heals bubbly helps our throughput, it’s certainly not overpowered. There are a few holy paladins who, in an attempt to see how far Illuminated Healing can go, have enchanted, reforged, and gemmed into mastery completely. With IH bubbles absorbing 35% of the value of the original heal, stacking mastery can obviously make something interesting happen. How potent can [hide]Illuminated Healing[/hide] really become?[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: Just how masterful can mastery healing get[/hide]?Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: Just how masterful can mastery healing get[/hide]? originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for night elf roleplayers

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each week, [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] brings you [hide]All the World’s a Stage[/hide] with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW. Have questions about roleplaying, or roleplaying issues? [hide]Email me[/hide] — I’m always open to suggestions!

[hide]Last week[/hide], we covered a few of the major plot points currently surrounding the Forsaken and what they’ve been up to so far in Cataclysm. This week, we’re going to head over to the Alliance side of things to take a look at the night elves and what they’ve been doing in the wake of all the cataclysmic chaos and destruction. With the launch of [hide]patch 4.2[/hide], the night elves have been launched back to the focus of the story as they deal with crippling losses in Hyjal and the final showdown between the mortal races of Azeroth and the elemental lord Ragnaros.

Of course, that’s the obvious road to take when dealing with a character that has been active in Azeroth since World of Warcraft’s launch. However, Ragnaros and his attacks, the fight for Nordrassil, and the reclamation of Hyjal shouldn’t be the only focus for night elf players. Since Cataclysm, night elf society has taken several unexpected turns that are of interest to night elf roleplayers, new and experienced alike.[hide]Continue reading All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for night elf roleplayers[/hide]Filed under: [hide]All the World’s a Stage (Roleplaying)[/hide][hide]All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for night elf roleplayers[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. Sunday Morning Funnies: Da bomb

[hide][/hide]
[hide]Sunday Morning Funnies[/hide] is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Congrats to both [hide]Ez[/hide] and [hide]Agony[/hide] for correctly answering last week’s trivia questions! You’ve both won an imaginary burlap sack, jar of mystery jam, and super-comfy giant pillow! Trivia for next week is on hold and will return the following week.

In the meantime, we have some pretty cool comics this week. There’s at least one explosion, a surprising attempt at being crafty, suffocating bear hugs, and kitchen misadventures. Enjoy![hide]Continue reading Sunday Morning Funnies: Da bomb[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Humor[/hide], [hide]Comics[/hide], [hide]Sunday Morning Funnies[/hide][hide]Sunday Morning Funnies: Da bomb[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. The Queue: Dwarves!

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

I am unreasonably excited about The Hobbit movies, especially after seeing the new photos of the cast in costume that have been coming out. Above are Oin and Gloin. Gloin is Gimli’s dad, in case you can’t see the resemblance.

Iaim asked:

Where did the ‘Working as intended.’ meme come from? I’ve been seeing it a lot recently in the comments…

It’s a phrase with long history in the software industry, not just World of Warcraft. Generally, a user will come to the company with an issue with the software, something that seems to be wrong, and the developer may respond that the issue is not actually a bug, that it’s actually working as intended. Blizzard doesn’t generally use this phrase when dealing with customers directly, since boy howdy do players hate hearing it, but it still finds its way into conversation sometimes. I believe it’s still in one of the preformatted emails you’ll receive from GMs when reporting something that’s, well, working as intended.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Dwarves![/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Dwarves![/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. WRUP: March 24, 1984

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, «What are you playing this week?» — otherwise known as: [hide]WRUP[/hide]. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

Dear Mr. O’Halloran,

I accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in Blogsmith for whatever it was that I did wrong … and what I did — volunteer to write WRUP — was wrong. But I think you’re crazy to make me write this post telling you who I think I am, or detail how far everyone has progressed into the Firelands.

What do you care?

You see us as you want to see us… in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. You see us as a boomkin, a paladin, a shadow priest, a healer, and a McCurley. Correct? That’s the way we saw each other at seven o’clock this morning.

We were brainwashed.[hide]Continue reading WRUP: March 24, 1984[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide][hide]WRUP: March 24, 1984[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, we’re taking a trip through the first 20 levels of the game, which are now eternal. The important thing to remember about rolling a mage is that you’ve made the right choice; congratulations.

Between the newly adopted [hide]unending demo[/hide], the [hide]extended Recruit-a-Friend promotion[/hide], and the freshly bargain-priced WoW/The Burning Crusade bundle, it seems Blizzard is making a concerted effort to woo new players. And from my limited viewpoint, it seems to be working.

I have a brother, a year and some change younger than me, who doesn’t live near me. This sucks, because he and I have absolutely everything in common. We grew up taking turns watching each other play Shining Force, or designing Dungeons & Dragons campaigns to force each other to play through, but then college, family, and career separated us. I’m here in Las Vegas playing copious amounts of video games and ignoring my kids, and he’s at Purdue, working on his doctorate and just generally making me ashamed of the waste my life has become. Naturally, I’ve been trying for years to drag him down to my level. Thus far he’s resisted, but when I notified him of these new opportunities to play the game on the cheap, he finally took the plunge.

And rolled a warrior.

Sigh.

Oh well. At least it wasn’t a warlock, right?[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

Seriously, what happened to the awesome night elves of Warcraft 3? I think all the problems started when night elf males couldn’t have kickin’ wizard beards (a deficit found in nearly all playable non-dwarf races).

Eviljiggy asked:

I want to get the achievement «Stood in the Fire» before it goes away once someone kills Deathwing on my realm, probably in a patch or 2. However, I’m never ever in the right area he barbeques. Is there any Add-on or chat channel or anything of the sort to track what zone he’s in or going to?

Unfortunately, the zone selection appears to be totally random, and there’s not really enough to time to get the zone and in range of his breath to get the achievement if you’re not already in the area.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons[/hide][hide]The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Go away, I’m moping

[hide][/hide]
Ugh. Nothing ruins a good staring into the ocean and brooding session like a big slimy murloc showing up and wanting attention. Now [hide]Viaola[/hide] of [hide]Strike[/hide] on Fenris (US-A) has to get up from her shipwreck and go kill this reptile. (Amphibian? Aquatic mammal? What are murlocs, anyway?) Getting up is so lame. Can’t she just send her rat to do it?

Breakfast Topic: What will you do after WoW?

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

I’m going to ask a question, and you’re not going to like it. In fact, you may want to take a big chug from a pint of Ironforge’s finest first. Go ahead, have a seat; I’ll wait. In fact, I’ll have one of my own.

Ready? Just remember, it’s hypothetical, all right? Okay, here goes: What would you do if WoW shut down tomorrow? Say there were a huge natural disaster (but all the Blizzard employees made it out okay; I’m not cruel) and there was major data corruption and destruction, or perhaps the game just ran its course and is over. Either way, there is no more Azeroth, no servers or realms, no character list, not even a login screen or an annoying dragon roar every minute. What would you do?

Do you have another game to fill your time? If it were sudden and unforeseen, would you be angry about all your lost time and give up games altogether? Would you fill up the void with other technological means, with another hobby, or with family time?

I would probably spend more time writing, and maybe get some of these brainstorms colliding in my head down on paper. There are other games I’ve been putting off so I could concentrate on WoW that I could give a whirl. How would you fill your time?
