The Lawbringer: Letters to Rogers, letters to Congress

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

We’ve got two stories to talk about on The Lawbringer today, both interestingly involving letters. That’s right — letters. To you from me, that sort of thing. These letters, however, are instruments of change in a world where we as consumers seem not to have much control or ability to change the big picture concepts that dot our path to consistent entertainment. The amount of energy that we have to put into just getting in a decent WoW session is staggering at times.

The first story revolves around [hide]Rogers[/hide], one of the largest Canadian internet service providers, famous for its lame bandwidth caps and my old Canadian guildmates shouting «Rogers sucks!» as much as they could on Mumble. Yes, it is another chapter in the [hide]Mathew McCurley Guide to Awful Bandwidth Throttling[/hide] — but hopefully, this new information and story chapter will get us on the path to better WoW experiences in the face of the immense throttling of WoW data as peer-to-peer traffic.

The second story is all about letters that you will want to send. [hide]Last week[/hide], I wrote The Lawbringer about Senate Bill S.978, colloquially being referred to as the anti-streaming bill. While not directly prohibiting video game streaming or even mentioning video games anywhere in the proposed legislation, video games are nonetheless obliterated in the crossfire of the entertainment industry and would-be illegal streamers making millions off of pirated entertainment, movies, music, and more. The [hide]Entertainment Consumers Association[/hide] has begun a letter-writing campaign to inform and implore Congress to not pass a bill with such broad and language lacking description.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Letters to Rogers, letters to Congress[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Letters to Rogers, letters to Congress[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. Ready Check: WoW Insider’s Guide to Lord Rhyolith

[hide]Ready Check[/hide] helps you prepare yourself and your raid for the bosses that simply require killing. Check back with Ready Check each week for the latest pointers on killing adds, not standing in fire, and hoping for loot that won’t drop.

WoW players are not unaccustomed to tackling giant creatures. We’ve slain dragons, gronn, elemental lords, and even ogres infused with the raw power of the Old Gods. In our time, there have been some big bads that were, well, literally big. Lord Rhyolith now falls into that criteria — a massive molten lord covered in rocks so thick and so sharp that spells and blades couldn’t even think to but dink away at his hide.

This royalty of the Firelands is one of the first four «fluid» bosses in Firelands. You can reach Lord Rhyolith by following the road to the right, over the bridge and up the gauntlet ramp. There he stands, out on a platform surrounded by lava, begging for players to come and test their mettle against him. This is going to be one tough nut to crack; are you up for the challenge?[hide]Continue reading Ready Check: WoW Insider’s Guide to Lord Rhyolith[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Ready Check (Raiding)[/hide][hide]Ready Check: WoW Insider’s Guide to Lord Rhyolith[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Druid of the flame

[hide][/hide]
It seems that [hide]Karsolais[/hide] of [hide]Endgame[/hide] on Galakrond (US-A) has fallen into a pool of rather dirty [hide]liquid hot magma[/hide]. But after enduring this week’s heat wave in the American south, a dip in some lava sounds cool and refreshing. It was so hot that the cords of my earbuds melted together in my pocket. Seriously! Breakfast Topic: What parts of the game are most underappreciated?

[hide][/hide]

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the Aol guest writer program that [hide]brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages[/hide].

Many things in the World of Warcraft go unappreciated by the community as a whole. In such a large game and such an extensive world, it is easy to overlook small details without which the game would be much more difficult and frustrating or just less pleasant to play.

The first thing that comes to my mind that is underappreciated in WoW is the music and sound effects. I know so many people who play with their sound down, and while I can understand muting my sound for a few quests or specific zones or while fighting certain monsters, I cannot believe that so many people play this game completely muted and listening to their own «thrash metal» or whatever it is the kids are listening to these days.

I’ve been playing a priest lately. I’ve been doing the Tol Barad dailies every day, and I am absolutely loving the Jedi mind trick ability [hide]Mind Soothe[/hide]. Yet I know that 90% of priests out there don’t even have it on their action bar … and I’m sure some have never even heard of it. Mind Soothe is like a lesser but group-wide stealth! You can skip entire trash pulls in heroics with it, or just run past that certain monster that you don’t wish to fight.

With all your love of the game, what aspect of it do you love that you think not enough other people appreciate? Share your thoughts, and show some appreciation for the little things that Blizzard’s team has put hard work into!

Breakfast Topic: What class should a brand new player pick?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Just recently, I finally convinced my wife to roll and level a character with me (it only took three years). We sat down together, and as I started walking her through the character creation process, I really had trouble deciding what would be the best class for her to learn on. I wanted something simple, but not so simple that it became boring after a few levels. At the same time, I didn’t want her to play a particularly complicated class like a [hide]feral druid[/hide] that might overwhelm her and prevent her from enjoying the game for what it is.

As she was playing around with face and hair options, I made up a series of questions to narrow down the role and class she might enjoy, eventually deciding on a warlock. If nothing else, my main is a warlock, and I’d be able to help her in ways that I wouldn’t if she’d decided on a warrior or shaman. As we entered the game world and started killing an assortment of critters for pitiful amounts of copper and silver, she asked me why I «get to chop stuff.» I explained that my character was a paladin and that paladins don’t hang back and fling spells like warlocks, they just hit stuff with their swords. A few seconds passed, and she said, «I think I want to chop stuff, too.» So much for my little impromptu questionnaire.

What class would you recommend to a brand new player? How would you balance what you know of the player with what you know of the game and its assorted roles? Would you suggest a tank or healer class? Do you think ranged or melee DPS is easier to pick up? Would you take the safe route and suggest a druid that can do anything or a hunter that is historically held as a class that is «easy to learn but difficult to master»?

Patch 4.2 hotfixes for July 14

Another night, another round of hotfixes for [hide]patch 4.2[/hide]. Today’s list, posted to the official Warcraft blog, is pretty short — but it includes some tweaks to heroic encounters in the new Firelands raid. Also included are a welcome fix to those players doing dailies out in the Molten Front, and a tweak for those seeking the new legendary weapon.

In Firelands, Rhyolith’s Concussive Stomp damage has been increased on heroic difficulty.

In the heroic Ragnaros encounter, Molten Elemental move speed has been decreased by 15% on Heroic difficulty — but the adjustment will require a realm restart to take effect.

Players working on the Peaked Interest quest should no longer experience issues when the Fire Hawk Carry Egg Ping spell is cast.

Follow after the break for the full list of hotfixes.[hide]Continue reading Patch 4.2 hotfixes for July 14[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide], [hide]Hotfixes[/hide][hide]Patch 4.2 hotfixes for July 14[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 23:49:00 EST. Video of the Delegation and Volcanus the Firelord

Spoiler alert! If you do not want to read or watch anything about the quest for the legendary staff [hide]Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest[/hide], read and watch no further. Also, the video contains some strong language, but nothing you wouldn’t expect from a raid group on Vent.

Guilds are finally getting their 25 Eternal Embers from the Firelands and continuing to forge the great legendary staff Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest. The next big hurdle in the quest for the staff is the [hide]Delegation[/hide] quest line, requiring raiders to complete a set of four charged fragments from Shannox, Beth’tilac, Rhyolith, and Alysrazor. Each fragment requires the player on the Dragonwrath quest to complete a task during these encounters in order to charge the boss-specific fragment. Once all of the fragments are complete, the raid gains access to The Anvil of Conflagration, where the [hide]Branch of Nordrassil[/hide] is being held.[hide]Continue reading Video of the Delegation and Volcanus the Firelord[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Video of the Delegation and Volcanus the Firelord[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 20:00:00 EST.
