Officers’ Quarters: Split decision

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes [hide]Officers’ Quarters[/hide], a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of [hide]The Guild Leader’s Handbook[/hide], available now from [hide]No Starch Press[/hide].

Just about every long-time WoW player has, at some point or another, found themselves [hide]at a crossroads[/hide], wishing they could split into [hide]multiple copies[/hide] like a mage. Should you stay with the guild you joined and the friends you’ve made there, or should you go join that other guild so you can [hide]see more content[/hide]? That’s probably the most frequently asked question that I receive.

This week, a player faces a similarly difficult crossroads, but in this case, one of the guilds she has to choose between wants to make her the guild leader.

Hey,

I’m currently split between two guilds. On the one hand, I have Guild A, which has been my home for two years, and more or less died about two months ago (by died, I mean that the Guild Master has completely abandoned it, and the only officer that logs on more than once every three-four weeks is the one who’s recently returned from a WoW break). The GM has been swapping which of his characters has the «big rank», and never logs on to actually play, let alone to give any explanation as to why he no longer cares for the guild. A few people still log on regularly, mostly, I believe, out of a hope that Guild A will return to its former glory.

On the other hand, I have Guild B, a serious but lighthearted and social raiding guild, which I joined on my main just over a month ago, when it was apparent that Guild A had been abandoned. I told myself that only my shaman would move over to B, but in the end, I preferred B’s humorous banter and regular conversations over A’s graveyard-like silence, and moved over all but two of my alts.[hide]Continue reading Officers’ Quarters: Split decision[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Officers’ Quarters (Guild Leadership)[/hide][hide]Officers’ Quarters: Split decision[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 09:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: Do you collect pets and mounts?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Just last night, I got [hide]Plenty of Pets[/hide]. I know, I know … I’m a bit behind the curve. My husband, on the other hand, has pages and pages of pets. And pages. And he’s a hunter. He even has the pets you have to purchase. He doesn’t have the [hide]Winged Guardian[/hide] yet, and it’s driving him nuts. Payday is on Friday, though. I suspect it will be added to his menagerie at that point.

Our guild is composed of people who love their pets, too. When we are standing around waiting for the next boss or instructions from our illustrious leader, it starts to look a bit like a traveling zoo. Pugs are running around dragging their hind ends on the floor, Onyxian Whelplings are taking deep breaths, Pandaren are bowing, and Lil’ KTs are Frostbolting random critters. It’s chaos, but hilarious!

Are you a pet collector, or could you not care less? Which pet is your favorite? Any particular reason? Do you just really like the way they look, or do your pets and mounts have a specific action that you love? I must secretly be a 12-year-old boy, because every time I see a «pug wipe,» I start giggling uncontrollably. I know. I can’t help it.

Know Your Lore: Cenarius, Malorne, and Ysera

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

He is the Lord of the Forest, a union of the heavens, and the earth. One of the most powerful and influential demigods in Azeroth, Cenarius and his teachings have led to the development of the druids, and no other demigod has been as closely involved with mortal affairs. It’s no surprise that the son of an Ancient and the closest thing Azeroth has to a goddess is so powerful — and his connection to the Aspect Ysera made him even more so.

He is the White Stag or Apa’ro, as the tauren call him. Malorne, an Ancient who served as a protector of nature, was rumored to have roamed the forests of Azeroth long before the night elves ever came into existence. He is the father of Cenarius, and unlike his son, he meddles little with the affairs of mortals. But his love with the goddess Elune resulted in the birth of his son, and his later association with Ysera guaranteed his son would be raised safely and with the right kind of guidance.

She is the Dreamer, Aspect of Nature and guardian of the Emerald Dream. Ysera has always been held in high regard by the night elves, who were bound to the Emerald Dream with Ysera’s blessing. But her relationship with Malorne resulted in a son she didn’t expect. Though not his mother by birth, Ysera was just as much a mother to Cenarius as Elune — perhaps more. After all, it was Ysera and the Emerald Dream that helped shape Cenarius into the demigod we know today.[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: Cenarius, Malorne, and Ysera[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: Cenarius, Malorne, and Ysera[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 20:00:00 EST. All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for blood elf roleplayers

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each week, [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] brings you [hide]All the World’s a Stage[/hide] with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW. Have questions about roleplaying or roleplaying issues? [hide]Email me[/hide] — I’m always open to suggestions!

As a race that wasn’t introduced until The Burning Crusade expansion, blood elves and their position in the Horde have always been a thorn in the side of roleplayers. On the one hand, you’ve got those who couldn’t care less about the fact that the Horde was given a «pretty» race; on the other, you have a group of people vehemently opposed to their inclusion. Despite the opposition, the blood elves movement from Alliance to Horde is perfectly supported by lore, even if the naysayers would have you believe otherwise.

As for the current state of the blood elves … well, it’s slightly less chaotic than the times of The Burning Crusade, but there are still interesting points for blood elf roleplayers to play with. Even though Silvermoon and the surrounding areas weren’t really affected by the Cataclysm revamp, what you find upon leaving the starting areas certainly has been. Information left behind in the wake of TBC gives blood elf roleplayers a lot to think about when considering current news for character development.[hide]Continue reading All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for blood elf roleplayers[/hide]Filed under: [hide]All the World’s a Stage (Roleplaying)[/hide][hide]All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for blood elf roleplayers[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. The Care and Feeding of Warriors: How to spend your valor points

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], the column dedicated to [hide]arms[/hide], [hide]fury[/hide] and [hide]protection warriors[/hide]. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

[hide]Patch 4.2[/hide] is in full swing by now, with most players having unlocked either the Shadow Wardens or the Druids of the Talon for the various vendors. Many guilds are already working on heroic modes, and even more are fighting their way through the raid to one degree or another.

And what does this all mean to us warriors? Well, it means new gear, for one thing. The past couple of weeks, we’ve discussed gear you could pick up in the Firelands raid itself as well as via reputation rewards and unlockable vendors (and a quest chain). Now, it’s time to discuss what you can buy for valor points, since we’re getting close to the third week and you should have been able to pick up some points as well as had a shot at [hide]Occu’thar[/hide].

Before we go into the big list o’ loot, I wanted to say that a couple of weeks in, I’m feeling like I’m getting a handle on how warriors perform in the Firelands raid. It’s like I figured: Once again, warriors need to get geared up to equal other DPSers. I feel that for right now, arms DPS is the easiest to sustain, then SMF fury, and finally TG fury. I expect TG will pull ahead once I’m using a couple of Firelands weapons. On a fight like [hide]Rhyolith[/hide] or [hide]Staghelm[/hide], I can sustain more DPS than on an [hide]Alysrazor[/hide] or [hide]Shannox[/hide], where I have to target switch more, move around to chase down mobs or avoid damage and even interrupt. I think perhaps the nerfs to fury were more than was needed, but we’ll see once a couple more weeks are gone and we’re talking about set bonuses and Firelands level weapons.

Speaking of set bonuses, let’s start talking about valor point rewards.[hide]Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: How to spend your valor points[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Warrior[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide](Warrior) The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], [hide]Raid Guides[/hide][hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors: How to spend your valor points[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: The two-button mage myth

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, we dispel mage-related myths, expose wizardly untruth, and separate magical fact from fiction … just like the Mythbusters, only with more Fireballs.

You may not believe this, but lately I’ve been finding something more annoying than the continued existence of warlocks. I know, I know. Crazy, right? What could possibly be more annoying than our emo-loving, Hot Topic-frequenting, mascara-laden, parent-hating nemesises? Nemesi? Apparently the dictionary says «nemesis» is its own plural, which is just … boring.

Anyway, the answer to the question that I just pretended you asked is this:

«Mages are a two-button class.» — The internet

These days, you literally can’t post the word «mage» anywhere on the web without someone, usually multiple people, posting some poorly spelled, perplexingly punctuated amalgam of the above words. It’s usually intended as an indictment of the class, a dismissal of what non-mages feel is the simplistic nature of of our major DPS spell rotations. The assumption is that mages are an easy, boring class to play, that one could be a successful mage simply by drunkenly alternating pressing two buttons.

For a very long time, it was easy for me to ignore this. It was stupid, and false, and perpetuated by non-mages who were either clear trolls or outright ignorant. But lately, I’ve been hearing self-deprecating versions of this same phrase from actual, honest-to-goodness mages. Are we really buying into the ignorant assumptions of the rest of the community? It was at that moment that I realized that it was time I addressed what I call the two-button myth.[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: The two-button mage myth[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: The two-button mage myth[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. The Queue: Wizardly wisdom

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

In honor of the last Harry Potter movie, I impart to you this wisdom from its greatest wizard.

mbutler532011 asked:

Who is Knog and why is his bow so bad?

[hide]http://www.wowhead.com/item=62068/knogs-bow-of-ineptitude[/hide]

Knog is «Gonk» backwards, and Gonk is a hunter well-known on sites like Something Awful and Elitist Jerks. He really hates druids. Other SA folks also had their names emblazoned on terrible gear this expansion, like forum moderator and priest player Robble, with his [hide]wobbly staff[/hide].[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Wizardly wisdom[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Wizardly wisdom[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: How to rock Baleroc

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Every Sunday, [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with any questions you want answered, like how to fly, you fools.

While I hate to boil down an entire encounter to a single idea, sometimes it simply can’t be helped: [hide]Baleroc[/hide] is the healer fight of this tier of raid content. The developers have been throwing one healer fight at us per tier since Wrath began, making Baleroc the latest in a long line of mechanics designed to let healers play outside the box. [hide]Chimaeron[/hide] and [hide]Anub’arak[/hide] made us focus on keeping health pools low but not too low, while [hide]Loatheb[/hide] and Valithria challenged our burst and sustained throughput. [hide]General Vezax’s awful aura[/hide] forced us to make every point of mana count, although our love affair with intellect helped us weather that storm.

Baleroc makes us choose between healing the raid and healing the tank. It’s one of the age-old questions for healers, but Baleroc has upped the ante with the [hide]Vital Spark[/hide]/[hide]Vital Flame[/hide] mechanic. The choice of healing targets is transformed from a simple problem to a crucial decision, as the wrong move can cause a wipe. Luckily for you, [hide]Beacon of Light[/hide] will help you truly shine on this encounter, allowing holy paladins to dominate the [hide]top 40 board on World of Logs[/hide].[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: How to rock Baleroc[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: How to rock Baleroc[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Queue: An exclusive leak

[hide][/hide]

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

Yesterday, I went to Cryptozoic Entertainment’s Irvine HQ for a sneak preview of the upcoming [hide]WoW TCG[/hide] Twilight of the Dragons expansion set. While pretending to take a bathroom break, I snapped a picture of their R&D planning whiteboard, which is based on information Blizzard gives them about future plans for the MMO. I signed an NDA, but I don’t care — this stuff is too big not to share. Click it for a better look.

Themightysven asked:

So I was cruising through Highlands yesterday, blowing up bad guys with my leet lvl 84 skillz, when I dinged 85, and suddenly every fight was palatially more difficult. As an example, when I was 76 I soloed the first two challenges in the Amphitheater of Anguish, at 85 I could barely make a dent in the non-elite elementals in Thrall’s questline without having to stop and drink. I know that ratings degrade, but it seems like they may have degraded way more (while spell cost skyrocketed)

I wish I took Screenshots before and after because it seemed like my mana and mana regen both tanked by about 2000 in one level change. Am I crazy? I didn’t notice this on any other 85 (DK, Rogue, Mage) (okay, I may have noticed a lack of Oomph on the rogue, but not this severe…)

You’re not crazy! The amount of rating necessary to increase your stats increases dramatically each level from 80 to 85, so your gear gets less effective. You actually get weaker as you level. Pretty funny, right?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: An exclusive leak[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: An exclusive leak[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 17 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST.
