The Daily Quest: Examining and defining

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

I love the new map animation, and I love the fact that it works when you’re checking your mail, too. Although I still don’t quite understand what the heck I’m looking at. Is that a treasure map? Some weird island? Outland? Maybe some sort of weird Rorschach test?

Good question. While I’m puzzling out possible answers, why don’t we take a look at a few posts from around the blogosphere that also attempt to figure things out?

[hide]Falling Leaves and Wings[/hide] attempts to define an exceptional player from a druid’s [hide]point of view[/hide].

[hide]The Bossy Pally[/hide] discusses some thoughts on five things that make a [hide]good guild leader[/hide].

[hide]Blessing of Kings[/hide] examines dev interaction with the community and the [hide]Ask a Dev series[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

Breakfast Topic: When RL Jekylls go in-game Hyde

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

We’ve all had that friend — the real-world model citizen who ninja loots a purple and gets gkicked from your guild, leaving you to deal with your game community while trying to find out what came over your RL buddy.

I was in a similar situation many years ago. A friend of mine joined our raiding guild. He was a nice guy, but in game, he frequently taunted others, even on Vent. He openly told others to ignore the guild leader’s wife during raids because she wasn’t the raid leader (though she was a class lead and usually ended up leading the raid when the guild leader was dealing with loot). When I tried telling him that his actions didn’t seem like him and that he was doing things that undermined our guild structure, he simply said, «It’s a game. These people aren’t real.»

Suffice to say, I don’t play with him any more, but I also don’t talk to him in real life anymore. He was kicked from the guild, and then he and asked me to leave. I told him that while he was a good friend in real life, I felt that the way he acted in game didn’t match up to who I saw him as, and I told him I’d like to keep our friendship based in reality. Didn’t hear much from him after that.

Have you had a friend who turned into an online jerk? What happened? Were you able to save the friendship, or did in-game drama lead to real-world problems?

MMORPG World of Warcraft [hide]не получила[/hide] обещанную компенсацию в 4 000 очков чести, которую Blizzard Entertainment планировала выдать вчера во время технического обслуживания.

Вышел WoW-роман «Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects»

(Christie Golden) «[hide]Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects[/hide]», [hide]сообщает[/hide] официальный американский сайт MMORPG World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft.

Unlicensed World of Warcraft theme park opens in China

World Joyland hungers.

If you love Chinese knock-offs — and I know you do — you’ll love this bit of news: World Joyland, the famed and unlicensed World of Warcraft theme park in Changzhou, China, is now open for business. The people at [hide]Shanghaiist took a tour[/hide] of the place, taking myriad pictures of their experience.

In actuality, the park is less of a WoW rip-off and more of a Blizzard rip-off. It includes a Starcraft-themed area named «Universe of Starship» in addition to its World of Warcraft area, which is named «Terrain of Magic.»

What kind of rides does the place have? Well, Shanghaiist detailed one of them:

Our first ride was an exciting little number called Splash of Monster Blood, and they’re not kidding about the splash. We’ll just say this much: trying to act cool by refusing the buy a sky blue poncho on your way in is a giant n00b stamp.

The ride was, as its sign board attests, a «beast-bloody journey» (a.k.a. your standard amusement park log ride affair.) After clicking and chugging up a tunnel full of orcs and monsters, you are then plunged down into water that manages somehow to smash you from both the front and the back simultaneously.

While World Joyland may have skimped on the official licensing — China is much cooler with copyright infringement than we Americans are — we’re pretty sure they didn’t skimp on anything else while building the place. The place is probably totally safe and not covered in lead-based paints. Right? Right?

The news is already rolling out for the upcoming [hide]WoW Patch 4.2[/hide]! Preview the [hide]new Firelands raid[/hide], marvel at the [hide]new legendary staff[/hide], and get the inside scoop on [hide]new quest hubs[/hide] — plus [hide]new tier 12 armor[/hide]!

Breakfast Topic: What’s in a name?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

Back when I first made my main on my server, it was around Halloween and I was looking at costumes. A beer wench costume caught my eye, and it became the inspiration for my name. Much later when achievements and many titles were introduced, I learned of the [hide]Salty[/hide] title and knew I had to get it. Salty just goes so well with a wench name; I always go back to it after wearing a new one for a few days.

Names are a very key part of the game — from the creation screen, titles, pets, renaming scrolls for pets, guild names, and paid guild/character name changes. You can now even pay gold to change your warlock demon’s name, if you wish.

Either I’m not very creative or I just like to honor the beast, but if I tame a rare creature that comes with a name, I rename it back to the original. It would be neat if there were an option to either keep the name or rename it, since some names you can’t emulate exactly.

There are some creatures out there that I wish could be named or renamed — a mage’s water elemental, for example. It would be nice if something that is with you from day one could have a unique name, similar to warlock demons and death knight minions.

What was your inspiration for your name? Is there a title that was a perfect fit? Have you renamed any of your pets, demons or mini-pets, or do you keep their original names? Do you wish you could name something but can’t yet?

WoW Moviewatch: Dragon Slayers

[hide]Dragon Slayers[/hide] was created by Erunno for the Slovene community. The video is an homage to the Slayers anime, in case you don’t recognize the style. English speakers can press the CC button on the YouTube player to see and read the subtitles.

The animation in this video blew me away. Not only are the graphics smooth and convincing, Erunno did an outstanding job adapting a traditional anime style to WoW art. This really is a beautiful video to watch, and my hat’s off to Erunno for his incredible skills.

The Queue: Waking flames

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

My [hide]plea for rain on Monday[/hide] actually worked. Who knew I held that kind of power? Except it’s still hot as heck, and I demand more. Give me your rain, people. All of it.

Marco asked:

The Flamewalkers in the Firelands resemble the naga quite a bit. Is there any natural link between the 2 races? Are they related in some way? Or did blizzard take the easy way and model them after the naga’s skeleton and design to save time?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Waking flames[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Waking flames[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 11:00:00 EST.

Оружейная World of Warcraft (WoWArmory) будет переработана, [hide]сообщает[/hide] компания Blizzard Entertainment.
