WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics

New around here? [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide] has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the [hide]WoW Rookie Guide[/hide]. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

We all know that you should do heroic 5-mans before you start raiding. It’s more than just a maxim or saying; you need the gear, experience, and practice. But a reader recently mailed me and asked:

I’ve only been trying to do endgame for the last few months, since I didn’t have time while working a full time job. Now, I am trying to learn how to raid by doing heroic dungeons. It’s going pretty rough and I’m getting some pretty good gear but I have a question.

Ignoring the gear itself, what am I getting out of these dungeons? Do raid bosses actually work anything like heroic bosses?

It’s a fair question, and I can see how someone new to the endgame might feel frustrated at not being in the «real» game. The bad news is that raid bosses often do work a little differently; some tactics and maneuvers that exist in raiding have no correlation to 5-man dungeons. For example, you never swap tanks in 5-man instances because you only have one tank at a time.

But all is not lost. It might actually surprise you how many raid boss tactics mirror 5-man encounters. Let’s take a look at some of the T11 bosses and which 5-mans might help prepare you for them. (We’re looking at T11 bosses because, admittedly, you shouldn’t go straight from 5-man heroics to the Firelands.)[hide]Continue reading WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 17:00:00 EST. Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU?

Every Thursday, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Scattered Shots[/hide] for [hide]beast mastery[/hide], [hide]marksmanship[/hide] and [hide]survival[/hide] hunters. Frostheim of [hide]Warcraft Hunters Union[/hide] uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to [hide]Frostheim[/hide].

Today’s header video is a sneak peek at the hunter class in patch 7.3, after the implementation of dual wielding and after minimum range is finally removed from the game. It also looks like we get a melee disarm, which I agree would be nice. Pillar humping is clearly still a vital arena strategy, however. This look at the awesomeness to come should help soften the pain of the unpleasant subject of today’s column.

The hunter pet stance changes blow.

There’s just no sugarcoating it; the changes to pet stances simply make our lives worse than they were before. If you want to hand me a petition to repeal the changes, I will happily sign it. However, it seems likely the changes are something that we’re just going to have to put up with, like ads to [hide]buy gold online[/hide], fake [hide]sparkle pony[/hide] phishing emails, and the continued [hide]existence of elves[/hide]. So, too, must we apparently suck it up and deal with increasingly unruly pets that need a stronger guiding hand.

Join me after the cut as we discuss the changes in more depth and ask the question of what is to be done about it. Do we hunters try to wail up a paladin-like storm of QQ in hopes of effecting a change, or is it something deliberate and we just have to HTFU?[hide]Continue reading Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU[/hide]?Filed under: [hide]Hunter[/hide], [hide](Hunter) Scattered Shots[/hide][hide]Scattered Shots: Hunter pet changes — QQ or HTFU[/hide]? originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. Addon Spotlight: Slackers, beware! RSC is on to you

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

Are you ready to pull? The ready check says you’ve got the green light, people look ready, and your current raid boss stands in front of you, cruising for a bruising every moment you wait before initiating the fight. Stop. Is everyone flasked? Did everyone eat the feast? Who pre-potted on a progression encounter? Has someone dropped a repair bot that was not noticed? Are you sure that you’re ready to pull?

There is little more annoying than raiders giving half their effort to the team effort, 10- or 25-man raiding. It’s game time, people! Stop slacking! We’ve got bosses to kick in the loot bags and gear to grab. Maybe with a little help from RaidSlackCheck, you can whip your cadre of nerds into shape and get these fights down at a quicker pace.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: Slackers, beware! Around Azeroth: Those picky druids, part 1

[hide][/hide]
Now, why would a blood elf death knight approach a famous Alliance treehugger on bended knee? «Malfurion declined my application to join the Cenarion Circle,» complains [hide]Aimee[/hide] of [hide]The Insiders[/hide] on Zangarmarsh (US-H). «Some trumped-up blather about ‘That’s not a treant, and you’re not a druid.’ I’ll show him. I’ll show them all!» Stay tuned for tomorrow’s thrilling conclusion!

Phat Loot Phriday: Mandible of Beth’tilac

«I brought you a gift,» Lolegolas said. «It’s flaming. I know how much you like stuff on fire.»

Throgg turned the [hide]Mandible of Beth’tilac[/hide] over in his hands. «It’s a jawbone! You brought me a flaming jawbone. That is very kind welcome home gift,» the orc said thoughtfully. «What it do?»

«The fire is the enchantment, admittedly. It’s mostly just a mandible with duct tape.» Lolegolas sat on a chair, carefully sitting on his hands to cover the shakes. The trembling was getting bad, but he didn’t want the recovering orc to see. «It’s for tanking, I’m pretty sure. It’s angled well to help you dodge blows and such.»

«And it flames! I can yell ‘Flame on!’ instead of ‘Throgg smash!’ It will be fun. When are we going to the flaming lands?»

«[hide]Firelands[/hide],» Lolegolas said. «Maybe next week, after we get a little more rest. The worgen’s out fishing up some food now, and we can probably find an expedition easily.»

«Flame on!» Throgg said, wielding the mandible. «The flaming duo returns!»[hide]Continue reading Phat Loot Phriday: Mandible of Beth’tilac[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Phat Loot Phriday[/hide][hide]Phat Loot Phriday: Mandible of Beth’tilac[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 09:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: What’s your favorite in-game toy?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

World of Warcraft is a huge world filled with many things. One thing that sets it apart from other MMOs for me is the amount of toys and RP items that exist in the game. I claim to have all of them, and I’m pretty sure I have at least 95% of them. I love them all. The day patch 4.1 came out, I dug up the [hide]Ancient Amber[/hide] from archaeology, and I loved it. On the same day, Blizzard also fixed the [hide]Gnomish Gravity Well[/hide], which is my new favorite engineering item. I have so many toys, I can’t pick which one I like the most.

There are even toys that can be combined, like [hide]Orb of the Sin’dorei[/hide] and [hide]Kalytha’s Haunted Locket[/hide] (which turns you into a female blood elf, even if you’re a male) — and what about [hide]Burgy Blackheart’s Handsome Hat[/hide] combined with [hide]Ethereal Oil[/hide] for a super-ghostly form?

Do you have a bunch of toys like myself? Do you have an [hide]Arcanite Ripper[/hide] that you shred whenever your raid is having an AFK break? Or maybe a [hide]Foam Sword Rack[/hide] to break out a fight? A [hide]Super-Simian Sphere[/hide] to go bananas with? Share your favorite toys and what you like to do with them. They make the game unique, and it’s time people express their love for them! (Not to mention … I might find one that I missed!)

Gold Capped: Buy low, sell long

[hide][/hide]
Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Gold Capped[/hide], in which Basil «[hide]Euripides[/hide]» Berntsen aims to show you how to make money on the auction house. [hide]Email Basil[/hide] with your questions, comments, or hate mail!

I’ve often downplayed the «buy low, sell high» aspect of the money-making game, instead focusing on using trade skills to create value and profits. There is, however, a lot to be said for brokerage. It can be much riskier but has a very good profit per hour when you win your bets. Unlike a game of cards, though, the odds are not stacked against you.

There’s one key fact that can stack the odds of brokerage in your favor: People charge less for items in a trade window than others would pay on the auction house. The best strategy to take advantage of this is to buy low and sell long. Why long instead of high? They actually amount to the same thing, but the key here is that instead of immediately trying to find some buyer who will put more money into a trade window than you, you list the product on the auction house.

The auction house is the great differentiator between people looking to make a quick sale and those willing to wait for a high margin. If you see someone selling something in trade chat, chances are that no matter how much they’re asking for, they’re expecting a low-ball offer and are willing to sell somewhere in the middle. So what is it about the AH that makes stuff sell for more?[hide]Continue reading Gold Capped: Buy low, sell long[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Economy[/hide], [hide]Gold Capped[/hide][hide]Gold Capped: Buy low, sell long[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 20:00:00 EST.
