Breakfast Topic: Will you quit with a bang or fade away?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

I always thought I’d go out with a bang, one last hurrah. Perhaps a ride through the Horde capital cities with 39 of my closest Alliance pals, leaving a path of devastation as we destroy anyone who dared get in our way. Maybe I’d take my druid on one last flight from Booty Bay to Light’s Hope Chapel, or teleport to the Moonglade and fly down to Un’Goro crater. I’d take in the disjointed, chaotic beauty that is Azeroth one last time.

How did I hang it up? After logging on for a few weeks only for jewelcrafting dailies before leaving for work, I was late one day and skipped my dailies. I never bothered to log back on. After a week, I finally realized I’d stopped playing, went to the forums, and informed my guild leader that I would be removing myself as an officer due to lack of playtime. I hadn’t fully decided to quit yet, and then I was cleaning up hard drive space. Five years of patches and expansions had inflated my World of Warcraft folder to almost 35GB — and with one quick keystroke (and a subsequent confirmation), it was gone.

I was always under the impression that I’d have to actively try to quit, agonizing over the thought of never logging on again. I was wrong. Quitting was just the way life worked out. It wasn’t something I planned, it wasn’t something I was hoping for, and it’s just the way it worked out. And it was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done.

Would you want to go out with a bang or out with a fizzle? Is there one thing you absolutely must do before you hang it up?

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], the column dedicated to [hide]arms[/hide], [hide]fury[/hide] and [hide]protection warriors[/hide]. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

Having talked about Firelands for a while and then the rather esoteric concept of reforging and optimizing your gear, this week we’re going to switch gears and talk about leveling in Cataclysm. Specifically, we’re going to talk about leveling as protection, which quite possibly is the best leveling spec for a new player. This guide is aimed at people who are just starting the game or the class.

Leveling as protection in the post-Cataclysm landscape offers several advantages.

Once you reach level 14 or so, you can begin queuing for instances as a tank, leading to fast experience and rewards. This makes gearing up a protection warrior fairly easy.

If you intend to tank in the endgame, leveling as protection will allow you to learn the role as you level rather than having to pick it up all at once.

Protection works well as a PVP spec in many brackets as you level.

Especially as you hit Outlands and Northrend, protection offers a good combination of survivability and the ability to destroy mobs for ease of questing, even for quests that normally indicate a group. Prot warriors can often pull more mobs and solo faster than DPS warriors.

[hide]Vengeance[/hide] is a lot of fun.

If you’re playing an alt, there are now several heirlooms for tanking warriors.

[hide]Hitting things in the face with a shield[/hide] is pretty awesome — I’m not going to lie.

Quite frankly, even if you don’t intend to tank at max level, protection can be an extremely fun way to level. Let’s take a beginner’s-eye view.[hide]Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Warrior[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Warrior) The Care and Feeding of Warriors[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A beginner’s guide to leveling as protection[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 20:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, though, we’re all about frost mages. In case you aren’t one, frost mages are the spec to be when fighting anything in Molten Core in 2005.

Just kidding. I kid because I love, guys. If the joke hits a little too close to home, though, it’s because there’s a very real, very prevalent, very false perception out there. It goes something like this:

Frost is for PVP. It isn’t viable for raiding.

This sentiment has been around at various levels of general acceptance since patch 1.1, and even in the most enlightened corners of Azeroth, you’ll still find those willing to perpetuate it. But then again, you’ll also find people still willing to perpetuate things like racism and gender bias, so I guess ignorance, like a weed or a cockroach or a warlock, is remarkably resilient.

At any rate, in today’s State of the Frost Mage address, you’ll no doubt discover a recurring theme. That theme is this:

Frost is absolutely, positively viable.[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: The state of the frost mage[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 06 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. The Daily Quest: Decompressing

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

Oh dear, summer’s nearly over, isn’t it? My dad and my brother are cramming in as much fishing as they can over the next few weeks. As for me, I’ll continue quietly working away at home and being entertained with stories of said fishing excursions. Sitting quietly by a buggy lake and staring at a pole with no fantastical internet distractions is just not my idea of a good time.

Still, fishing is supposed to be awfully relaxing — and speaking of relaxing, we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere concerning the art of simply letting all that stress and frustration go.

[hide]Manalicious[/hide] has some excellent advice for players frustrated while having one of [hide]those raid nights[/hide].

[hide]Big Bear Butt[/hide] thinks the game is a little easier when you look at it with a sense of humor — even those annoying [hide]Molten Front dailies[/hide].

Lastly, while [hide]FeralTree[/hide] doesn’t have anything to say right meow about the subject of relaxation, he does have one word of advice for feral kitties unable to get their paws on [hide]Fandral’s staff: Nyan[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

Phat Loot Phriday: Mirrored Boots

Throgg slid the plate boots onto his feet with a triumphant jerk. «They fit well.»

Lolegolas nodded in agreement before taking another sip of tea. His hands were shaking visibly, and the tea threatened to slosh over the side. «We can ignore the reflective top and assume you won’t be tucking your shoes under anyone’s skirts.»

«[hide]Mirrored Boots[/hide] good for tanks,» Throgg said, ignoring the jibe. «Very masterful. I didn’t even need to loot them from a dead monster. Locally made by craftsmen.»

Lolegolas started to agree but was interrupted by wracking coughs. He covered his mouth with a fist and spat flecks of blood. He waved away the orc. «It’s nothing.»

«Withdrawal,» Throgg stated simply. «You shouldn’t have done it.» The orc crossed the room and laid a hand on the blood elf’s shoulder. «Going to find ale house, bring back beer. We’ll spend a few nights here, let you rest.»

«I’ll be fine,» Lolegolas claimed, making motions to stand up.

«Rest quietly,» Throgg said, «or I’ll knock you to sleep. Lay down. I’ll be right back.»

The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house

Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Since Blizzard dropped [hide]the Diablo 3 bombshell[/hide] on us early Monday, I will post the second article in my [hide]series on micro-transaction models[/hide] next week. For those of you who have been living under the proverbial internet rock (you are missing some awesome memes right now), Blizzard announced that Diablo 3 would feature two auction houses, one using in-game gold as currency and the [hide]other using real currency[/hide] that would be deposited into a Battle.net account wallet and used from there.

The whole system gets more intriguing when you take into account that sales made on the real-money auction house can make their way to your own very real wallet through an unannounced third party or deposited back into your Battle.net wallet for use on anything digital in the Blizzard store, including WoW game time.

If you’re a regular reader of [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], you already know how excited I get over virtual currency. This is my wheelhouse. I feel like a master carpenter at Wood Con 2011, cosplaying as my favorite oak tree, quercus alnifolia. Pair that with real currency, and excitement levels hit the stratosphere. I may break through the atmosphere at some point. That faint sonic boom you hear will be me hurtling through the air in excitement and wonderment.

Sure, the Diablo real-money transaction (RMT) auction house is not related to World of Warcraft — or is it? Oh, it very much is. Faithful readers and not faithful alike (how could you, Debbie?) have been writing in questions via Twitter and email asking me to explain the auction house and talk about some of the potential legal and tax issues that could come around because of it. Also, many people want to know how the RMT auction house could benefit World of Warcraft, despite Rob Pardo’s saying there are no plans to bring it over to WoW. Let’s take a look at your questions.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: Q&A on Diablo’s real-money auction house[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: Tanking Beth’tilac and Rhyolith

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog [hide]Righteous Defense[/hide].

In previous columns, I’ve talked about how to tank Shannox and Baleroc, two of the early bosses of Firelands. Three bosses remain before you can cross the bridge to the Sulfuron Keep: Beth’tilac, Rhyolith, and Alysrazor.

That latter of the three demands a column of her own, considering the nuances of that fight and the special requirements and responsibilities one assumes when tanking it. But the first two — a walk in the park, comparatively speaking. Despite the general breeziness when tanking them, they still have their own slate of nuances. Allow me to offer a raft of tips to make your tanking duties as breezy as they should be.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: Tanking Beth’tilac and Rhyolith[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: Tanking Beth’tilac and Rhyolith[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. I haz a [hide]Twitters[/hide]! Like most everyone else these days, I too am a part of the social revolution that is sweeping the globe. Originally I was against the idea, but I’ve been a part of this network for some time now and I figured that it was finally the time to put that fact to work.

This week, I’ll be pulling questions from some of my followers on Twitter.
