The Lawbringer: WoW’s immune system and the gold selling virus

[hide][/hide]
Pop law abounds in [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide], your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Security is a lot like the human immune system — the longer you are exposed to the dangers of security intrusion and attacks against you, the easier it is to learn how to defend against new attacks. The video game industry has been the target of hackers of all types since its inception, with hacks and leaks dotting the gaming landscape. Gold farmers and gold hackers are the relatively new kids on the block, but have been fighting a long battle with Blizzard as both sides push and pull to achieve their goals. Blizzard is in a unique position where they have the knowledge of years of attacks behind them. What happens when the new guy enters the genre and has no such immunity or experience behind them, despite hackers knowing exactly what to do?

Have you ever read Jared Diamond’s [hide]Guns, Germs, and Steel[/hide]? No? Well, it’s a pretty darn good read, and you already like to read (as evidenced by your eyes’ sliding back and forth across the screen at this very moment), so pick up this Pulitzer Prize-winning look at the ascension of western civilization. The very basic (and I mean, extremely distilled version) thesis of the book is that western civilization achieved dominance over the world through serendipitous geographic factors and weaponry, diseases to which many were not immune, and central, powerful organization. I’m concerned with the germs part of the equation.

What does any of this have to do with the massively multiplayer genre and WoW in particular? Well, a lot, in fact.[hide]Continue reading The Lawbringer: WoW’s immune system and the gold selling virus[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]The Lawbringer[/hide][hide]The Lawbringer: WoW’s immune system and the gold selling virus[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. Shifting Perspectives: Comparing T12 boomkin gear against T11

[hide][/hide]
Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Shifting Perspectives[/hide] for [hide]cat[/hide] , [hide]bear[/hide] , [hide]restoration[/hide] and [hide]balance[/hide] druids. Balance news comes at you every Friday — learn how to master the forces of nature, and know what it means to be a giant laser turkey! Send questions, comments, or something you’d like to see to [hide]tyler@wowinsider.com[/hide].

Last week, I allowed the unthinkable to happen: I allowed myself to be out-DPSed by an elemental shaman. It was a terrible day, one from which I don’t think I shall ever recover. It happened the day that I had finally gotten my new, shiny four-piece bonus. I was eager to try it out, estatic that I finally got myself out of that god-awful dress. Then something just fell through. This week was more of a redemption, but I will still never forget losing out that one time. If anything good did come of it, at least you could say that it got me thinking.

Upgrading from tier 11 to tier 12 should be a pretty big deal. The set has more and better itemization, the set bonuses are pretty spectacular — so what could possibly be the issue? This week, we’ll be talking about how tier 12 is great but not the bundle of roses that you might think it is. Depending on the encounter in question, which tier is actually better can change on you. Given that, should you ever go back to your old tier 11?[hide]Continue reading Shifting Perspectives: Comparing T12 boomkin gear against T11[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Druid[/hide], [hide](Druid) Shifting Perspectives[/hide][hide]Shifting Perspectives: Comparing T12 boomkin gear against T11[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 16:00:00 EST. Phat Loot Phriday: Obsidian Arborweave Shoulders

[hide][/hide]
The druid shoved the [hide]Obsidian Arborweave Shoulders[/hide] across the table with a disgruntled snort. «I really should just become a moonkin. These shoulders let you summon flaming treants. Think about it! Trees on fire! They attack things. That’s enough of a draw for anyone.»

Throgg only stared into his mug.

«How is he?» the Gilnean asked quietly.

«Getting there,» Throgg responded. «Stopped cursing. Stopped sweating. Just resting now. Still breathing. Last time, cursing and sweating lasted much longer.»

«It was good that he did it, you know,» the druid said slowly. «You’d have died. Lolegolas will make it through this, but it’s not like you come back from being dead. It was a fair trade.»

«I’d do same,» Throgg sighed, downing his pale ale quickly. «But my job is to watch out for the little elf, not make him do these things for me. I’m the tank. That’s how it works.»

«You’re allowed to trade, from time to time,» the Gilnean countered. «It’s fair.»

«No,» Throgg said firmly. «I take the hits. That’s what the tank does.»

«Well, maybe the flaming trees can do that next time.»

The Daily Quest: Scientific progress goes «Boink»

[hide][/hide]

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

See that screenshot? That is my bank before patch 4.3. [hide]After patch 4.3[/hide], I will have bank space again — and no idea what to do with it all. I am crying, Blizzard. Tears (and tiers) of joy.

Speaking of that upcoming patch, I’m also looking forward to being able to wear all that gear without wearing that gear — as in, using that new [hide]transmogrification feature[/hide] that was just announced. Will it be expensive? Oh, I’m sure it will be. It’s OK. I’ve been saving my gold for just such an occasion. Speaking of transmogrification, we’ve got a few reactions to the news, courtesy of the blogosphere.

[hide]Shattered Beginnings[/hide] is excited about the changes and shares some screenshots of [hide]tier sets[/hide] from days gone by.

I think it’s safe to say that [hide]Big Bear Butt[/hide] is also excited by the changes and looking forward to [hide]gathering gear[/hide].

[hide]The Suicidal Zebra[/hide] points out a handy place to go in order to look up info for [hide]tier lookalikes[/hide].

[hide]Warcraft Hunters Union[/hide] points out that transmogrification is [hide]cosmetic only[/hide] and what that means for excited hunters.

[hide]Blessing of Kings[/hide] thinks perhaps past looks are meant to [hide]remain in the past[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

Raid Rx: Healing Majordomo Staghelm

[hide][/hide]
Every week, [hide]Raid Rx[/hide] will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is [hide]Matt Low[/hide], the grand poohbah of [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and a founder of [hide]Plus Heal[/hide], a discussion community for healers of all experience levels and interests. Catch his weekly podcast on healing, raiding and leading, the [hide]Matticast[/hide].

Anyone else excited about transmogrification? I’ll be shooting for tier 2, tier 5 and tier 6 looks. I’d rank those three as the greatest-looking priest sets of all time. But we’re not here to talk about things like cosmetic looks, because no one cares about that stuff, right?!

This week, we duck back into Firelands and take a look at Majordomo Staghelm. Among encounters that emphasize the use of cooldowns, the heroic phase of Halfus would be the Superbowl of all healing cooldown encounters. But the 25-man version of Majordomo, I would classify as the Olympics. There is a ton of preparation that needs to happen before throwing the entire raid in there. Before we devise a strategy that’s going to work for you, there are a few questions you’ll want to ask.

How many healers do you want to take in?

How many overall defensive raid cooldowns are available?

Is your DPS amazingly high?

Хранилище Бездны в патче 4.3

Еще одна заметка из обновления 4.3 для World of Warcraft [hide]рассказывает[/hide] о Хранилище Бездны.

15 Minutes of Fame: Summer Games heat up summer fun and fall recruiting

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide].

Work warning: Guild chatter and text in these videos contain the occasional snippet of strong language.

Summer break tugging your raiding schedule to shreds? Instead of stressing out about it, maybe it’s time to shine your organizational mojo on something a little more fun: a Summer Games event. Time and Tide of Earthen Ring (EU) has done just that, building a weekend of off-season fun and games spanning multiple guilds and even both factions. This may not be the first time we’ve featured articles about [hide]trivia contests[/hide], [hide]funny challenges[/hide] and even other special events centering on games before — but I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anything as well-planned as these Summer Games.

Not content to simply entertain its own, Time and Tide opened the event realm-wide this year in a savvy recruiting move that undoubtedly raised their guild’s profile and sparked plenty of interest from other players. You’ll want to read our interview with GM and Summer Games organizer Firelash, if for no other reason than to snag some sweet ideas for a morale-boosting, team-bonding, raider-recruiting event of your own![hide]Continue reading 15 Minutes of Fame: Summer Games heat up summer fun and fall recruiting[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Interviews[/hide], [hide]15 Minutes of Fame[/hide][hide]15 Minutes of Fame: Summer Games heat up summer fun and fall recruiting[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. Addon Spotlight: Best. Addons. Ever. — The Bestening

Each week, WoW Insider’s [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] brings you a fresh look at [hide]reader-submitted UIs[/hide] as well as [hide]Addon Spotlight[/hide], which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same.

We haven’t done [hide]this[/hide] in a while, have we? Listen, students. There are two types of addons out there: addons that serve useful purposes and are functionally superior to the Blizzard user interface elements, and addons that provide information in new and exciting ways that make the minutiae of the game more palatable and accessible.

OK, I lied. There are also the best. addons. EVER.

Sometimes, addons don’t have to be useful at all. In fact, some critical addons are the opposite of useful. Today, it’s all about some fun addons that aren’t going to make or break your raid game or drastically change the way you play in any meaningful way. Instead, these addons are about having fun.[hide]Continue reading Addon Spotlight: Best. Addons. Ever. — The Bestening[/hide][hide]Addon Spotlight: Best. Addons. WoW Rookie: How to get by the summer blues

New around here? [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide] has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the [hide]WoW Rookie Guide[/hide]. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

We’re in the full swing of summer, complete with the lurking shadow of a new school year that begins any time now. As guilds plunge headlong into the Firelands, raid rosters get tighter and tighter as faithful raid members eschew the game in favor of playing in the sun, having river shenanigans, and soaking up the heat before it’s gone for the year.

August and early September are frequently lulls for many players. This downpoint isn’t quite the same as «expansion blues,» since it’s a normal yearly phenomenon. After all, it’s awfully pretty outside; who wants to wipe on Rhyolith all night when you could be outside in the pool? While raid leaders yearn for their missing raid members, the players themselves struggle with balancing outside time and game playtime.

How can you manage to keep up with the game, even while the summer winds are beckoning you? Here are some tips.[hide]Continue reading WoW Rookie: How to get by the summer blues[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Rookie[/hide][hide]WoW Rookie: How to get by the summer blues[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST.
