Spiritual Guidance: When I was your age …

[hide][/hide]
Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Spiritual Guidance[/hide] for [hide]discipline[/hide], [hide]holy[/hide] and [hide]shadow[/hide] priests. [hide]Dawn Moore[/hide] covers the healing side of things for discipline and holy priests. She also writes for [hide]LearnToRaid.com[/hide] and produces the [hide]Circle of Healing Podcast[/hide].

Every so often, I’m hit with this brilliant idea that I should level another priest. It always sounds like a lot of fun at first, especially when I’m just toying around in the character creation screen making my new baby all pretty. Do I want brown hair or blond hair? The sexy eyes or the vapid ones? Hmm … now what do I name her? The fun ends a few minutes later when after skipping the opening cinematic (which I’ve already seen), I pick up my first quest and realize I’ve done this before. Sure, maybe this time I’m picking up [hide]Salvaged Supplies[/hide] instead of [hide]Cactus Apples[/hide] — but really, it’s always the same. That’s why after about 5 minutes of killing eight boars or eight bandits or eight worgen, I bask in the glory of level 2 and log out.

Except for today. Today, I was determined to get my new darling Elyria up to level 12 so I could see all of the new Worgen content and the new Forsaken quests in Silverpine Forest after that. I was really determined this time, and as a result, I made it through something like 42 [hide]Smite[/hide] casts without logging out and got to learn [hide]Flash Heal[/hide] as a result That’s when I realized that damn, priests these days have it easy. Flash Heal at level 3? Really? Let me tell you how it used to be.[hide]Continue reading Spiritual Guidance: When I was your age ..[/hide].Filed under: [hide]Priest[/hide], [hide](Priest) Spiritual Guidance[/hide][hide]Spiritual Guidance: When I was your age ..[/hide]. originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 22:00:00 EST. Tuesday Morning Post: Non-answers edition

[hide][/hide]
Happy Tuesday morning, everyone. Probably one of the most intriguing pieces of news this week was a little quote from Tom Chilton, who was heard to say that the whole [hide]«Mists of Pandaria» thing was totally overhyped[/hide]. Honestly, as much as I used to say that Mists of Pandaria probably wasn’t an actual expansion, this answer sort of changes my mind. If Chilton wanted to deny the existence of the Mists as an actual product, this would have been a perfect time to do it. Instead, he gave a perfect, classic little Blizzard non-answer — sure, he said Mists of Pandaria was overhyped, but he didn’t say it wasn’t the next expansion. I don’t know. Now I’m thinking we are headed to a misty little island somewhere to grind to level 90.

Whether you think we’re headed to Pandaria for the next expansion or not, there’s plenty of new for you to peruse in this week’s roundup. While this morning’s downtime consists primarily of rolling restarts, a small handful of [hide]servers will have some extra downtime[/hide] from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. PDT, so you’ll have at least some time to get caught up. Stay tuned as well for more patch 4.3 news. When it breaks, we’ll have it here.[hide]Continue reading Tuesday Morning Post: Non-answers edition[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Realm Status[/hide], [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Tuesday Morning Post: Non-answers edition[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 07:00:00 EST. Breakfast Topic: Are you a fan of Azeroth’s sheer size or fine detail?

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

World of Warcraft certainly has a wide appeal. One need only look at the motley crew assembled on this news blog to take notice of that. Along with such a vast fan base come varying ways to appreciate the game world.

Depending on who you ask, Watchmen is either a great piece of popular literature, a great graphic novel, or an overhyped piece of junk. If you talk to somebody who falls in one of the former camps, you’re likely to hear that one of the key reasons for the novel’s success are the small details. Throughout the novel, a minor backstory involving Soviet aggression and the escalating chances of nuclear war in Dr. Manhattan’s wake plays out in the form of newspaper headlines. It’s one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it plot points, but it really helps to create a sense of reality in the novel’s dystopian alternate history.

Such minor details are often the key to success in most artistic media — and gaming is no different. Look no further than WoW’s famed arguing NPCs [hide]Asric[/hide] and [hide]Jadaar[/hide], or on a smaller scale the shifty vendor [hide]Griftah[/hide], whose magical amulets prove a little less than spellbinding. Such small aspects of a game world so massive can often go overlooked, yet it is there that the game finds its heart. On the other hand, few game worlds are as expansive and in constant flux as Azeroth. With four continents to explore and a growing story that evolves every few months, it’s hard to downplay the brilliant sense of scale and scope that Blizzard has brought to Azeroth.

What sells the game world for you — the details, or the big picture?

Around Azeroth: My baby’s all liquored up

[hide][/hide]
When you’re the smallest member of a faction best known for 8-foot trolls, huge cow-men and green-skinned brutes, you may want to consider that the drinks in Orgrimmar might be a bit stronger than your body can process. Otherwise you’ll end up like this goblin, wasted away again in Margaritaville, snookered and snoring on the floor after half a pint of lager. (Thanks to [hide]Alizar[/hide] of [hide]Frater In Telum[/hide] on Auchindoun [EU-H] for the screenshot!)

Sunday Morning Funnies: Sweeps

[hide][/hide]
[hide]Sunday Morning Funnies[/hide] is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

We’re back for another week of chuckles and intrigue and cliffhangers!

A special thanks to reader [hide]Moeru[/hide], who found the [hide]archives of the Equinox comics[/hide] using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. I hope this helps you, [hide]Michael[/hide]! But seriously, if any of you haven’t read through these archives, they’re worth it!

Now, for the trivia questions:

What’s going on in the picture above?

Who is wearing a monocle?

Name a typical video game move (bonus points if it is a WoW move) that works like PPPP.

The Queue: What am I going to do with all these Green Proto-Drakes?

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Mathew McCurley[/hide] will be your host today.

I am practically swimming in [hide]Green Proto-Drakes[/hide]. I don’t even know what to do with them any more! [hide]Satchel of Exotic Mysteries[/hide], please give me mounts that I don’t already have. Worthless bags.

Tfish92 asked:

How is it fair that a hunter could switch from a gun to a bow because they like the way the bow looks but want the guns racial bonus but any other class that has a weapon type bonus can’t do the same? What if I want to keep my 2h sword for the bonus but I want to use an axe?

It’s the same concept and I don’t think one type should be the exception.

I see that you do not play a hunter. That statement is not meant to be mean or belittling in any way, but as the commenters have made note of, it is not about the look of the weapon per se but the sound each makes. Guns in WoW have a very audible sound that cannot be turned off without lowering the sound effects volume (which lowers all sound effects) or using an addon to suppress the gun firing noise. Guns are loud; bows are not. Each time you use an ability — boom. Each Auto-Shot — boom. It gets annoying quickly. That is why guns to bows and bows to guns is the exception to the rule.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: What am I going to do with all these Green Proto-Drakes[/hide]?Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: What am I going to do with all these Green Proto-Drakes[/hide]? originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Know Your Lore: Lore Q&A-palooza

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Warcraft has a huge story behind it that stretches back over three expansions and an original MMO, three RTS games, and expansions to those RTS games. It covers novels, comics, manga, short stories, and even books, quests, and items currently found in World of Warcraft. The sheer amount of information out there can be a dizzying, massive pile of stuff to keep track of for the average player. Though Cataclysm’s done pretty well with incorporating story and lore into gameplay, there are still tons of question out there left to be answered. Cataclysm doesn’t cover everything.

That said, this week I decided to mix it up a bit and answer some lore questions from previous posts. To mix it up even more, I also put a [hide]call out[/hide] on Twitter for everyone’s burning lore questions. I won’t be doing these too terribly often, but if you’ve got a question that isn’t answered in this post, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll come back here next time I decide to do a Q&A. Let’s get started, shall we?

@ericisgame from Twitter asked:

How many Old Gods are there currently and how many do you think will be eventually revealed?[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: Lore Q&A-palooza[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: Lore Q&A-palooza[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST. The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm

[hide][/hide]
Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]The Light and How to Swing It[/hide] for [hide]holy[/hide], [hide]protection[/hide] and [hide]retribution[/hide] paladins. Every Sunday, [hide]Chase Christian[/hide] invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to [hide]email me[/hide] with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

Of the three roles in WoW, healers are the odd man out. While mages might call it damage and a warrior might call it threat, the fact is that DPSers and tanks both excel at hurting their opponents. One of my guildmates often refers to tanking as «just DPSing from the front.» Healers, on the other hand, have nearly no offensive capabilities. The developers were nice enough to give every healer a cheap spell or two to spam to make us feel like we’re contributing, but our DPS is abysmal. Healers, more than any other role, are pointless without a group to support.

Throughout the years, we’ve heard the legends of [hide]the shockadin[/hide] — the holy paladin build that doled out merciful healing and wrathful judgement in equal doses. While offensive builds for the holy tree have always been around, they’ve never been truly viable in any serious situation. I love the thought of [hide]Holy Shocking[/hide] some hunter right off his high horse, but the numbers just don’t add up.[hide]Continue reading The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Paladin[/hide], [hide](Paladin) The Light and How to Swing It[/hide][hide]The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST.
