WoW Archivist: Patch 1.11 for fools

The [hide]WoW Archivist[/hide] explores the secrets of World of Warcraft’s past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW’s history? What secrets does the game still hold?

Today’s Archivist topic would have been a grand one to save for the next [hide]April Fools’ Day[/hide], but that’s half a year away! Sticking strictly to chronological patch order, what the heck, let’s just tackle it today. In the early months of 2006, World of Warcraft players were eagerly anticipating patch 1.11, Shadow of the Necropolis, which would implement the original [hide]40-man version of the Naxxramas raid[/hide]. On April 1, 2006, former Blizzard community manager [hide]Caydiem[/hide] decided to go fishing for trolls: She posted what is known as Evil Patch Notes.

Some of the false patch notes released for patch 1.11 on April Fools’ are timeless, immediately obvious jokes that just click, even five years later. Others are relics of their time, references to popular complaints and hatreds of 2005 and 2006. Players who have only just started playing World of Warcraft in the last year or two may not understand them at all. Others, years later, are closer to the truth than Caydiem may have ever expected.

Patch 1.11’s Evil Patch Notes will now be presented in full, where they may speak for themselves. Enjoy![hide]Continue reading WoW Archivist: Patch 1.11 for fools[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Archivist[/hide][hide]WoW Archivist: Patch 1.11 for fools[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Totem Talk: Head of shaman healing for a day

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Totem Talk[/hide] for [hide]elemental[/hide], [hide]enhancement[/hide] and [hide]restoration[/hide] shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and co-host of the [hide]For the Lore[/hide] and [hide]Raid Warning[/hide] podcasts), shows you how.

We’ve spent the last couple of weeks going over the history of the restoration shaman, dating back from the days of [hide]vanilla WoW[/hide] all the way up through [hide]Cataclysm[/hide]. I feel that no matter what your current stance is on shaman healing, we can all agree that it has been one roller coaster ride from then until now.

I’m an amateur game designer currently working on my own little indie game. Whether or not it will see the light of day is a topic for another day, but needless to say, things like class balance and character design are always of interest to me. With that in mind, I did pose a question for the last two weeks. It seemed like a simple question, but the answers I received were incredibly well thought-out. It made it hard to choose just a few for this week’s article, and it may wind up making into a second part later on. Let’s see what you, the readers, would propose for class changes to restoration shaman if you were head honcho for a day.[hide]Continue reading Totem Talk: Head of shaman healing for a day[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide](Shaman) Totem Talk[/hide][hide]Totem Talk: Head of shaman healing for a day[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 15:00:00 EST. Shifting Perspectives: Not seeing your gear is no excuse

[hide][/hide]
Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Shifting Perspectives[/hide] for [hide]cat[/hide], [hide]bear[/hide], [hide]restoration[/hide] and [hide]balance[/hide] druids. This Tuesday, hunter polearms are tossed into the trash bin and are then very quickly retrieved.

As many of you know, transmogrification — from the ancient Greek trans, meaning «To make one’s gear look better,» and mogrification, meaning «Than it actually is» — [hide]is coming to the game[/hide] in [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. As such, we are joined again by Letitia, the official fashion consultant and [hide]Snark Passenger[/hide] to the Shifting Perspectives column. Some of you may already know her from [hide]Shifting Perspectives: Fun with race choice[/hide], in which we pronounced one particular human model a perfect in-game example of Stalinist realism, and [hide]Shifting Perspectives: The druid of 2010[/hide], in which Allison was scraped off a bus station bathroom floor in order to write the article.

In the interests of not seeing a flood of druids run around in uncoordinated ensembles, we have assembled a set of suggestions you may wish to review. They were compiled and ranked according to the scientific rationale of not wanting to flinch whenever I shifted out of form. Our priorities are the helm, shoulder, cloak, and chest slots — the ones that really define an outfit — and I’ll revisit the series on some future date, or whenever I can get Letitia away from her chosen career of throwing garbage at Los Angeles stylists.

Oh, and as an important aside — Anne’s [hide]World of Wardrobe series[/hide] has a lot of good tips for anyone looking to put together a complete tier set. Reddit’s [hide]WoW Transmogrification subreddit[/hide] also has a lot of good tips, as do Wowhead’s blogs on [hide]unique items[/hide] and [hide]NPC sets to copy[/hide]. The [hide]Visual Roleplay Gear List[/hide] is also an incredibly addictive site, though not all of the sets it features will be possible to use for «mogging.»[hide]Continue reading Shifting Perspectives: Not seeing your gear is no excuse[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Druid[/hide], [hide]Humor[/hide], [hide](Druid) Shifting Perspectives[/hide][hide]Shifting Perspectives: Not seeing your gear is no excuse[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 17:00:00 EST. Lichborne: Analyzing the proposed patch 4.3 death knight tanking changes

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Lichborne[/hide] for [hide]blood[/hide], [hide]frost[/hide], and [hide]unholy[/hide] death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let’s show the other classes how a hero class gets things done. This week’s header image comes to us from everyone’s favorite WoW Insider commenter, [hide]Orkchop[/hide].

So recently, Lead Systems Designer Greg «Ghostcrawler» Street posted a new [hide]Dev Watercooler[/hide] discussing the ins and outs of the new active mitigation tank philosophy. Since he dedicated a whole section to proposed death knight changes in [hide]patch 4.3[/hide], I figured it would be a good idea to take a look at the stuff and see what it does.

My preliminary verdict would be pretty simple: It’s a pretty big help. It fixes or mitigates a lot of our quality of life issues, it makes a little less squishy, and it nullifies rune tetris nicely. I can’t really disagree with the individual changes or the rationale behind them. That said, it doesn’t completely solve our problems, and there are probably one or two more little things to be done before stuff looks really good. Let’s take a look at the specifics.[hide]Continue reading Lichborne: Analyzing the proposed patch 4.3 death knight tanking changes[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Death Knight[/hide], [hide](Death Knight) Lichborne[/hide][hide]Lichborne: Analyzing the proposed patch 4.3 death knight tanking changes[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: How to Win at Fishing

I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting [hide]How to Win at Fishing[/hide]. It doesn’t seem like an obvious subject for [hide]Wowcrendor’s[/hide] trademark brand of humor, but he picked up the subject and knocked it out of the park.

This movie has a slightly different format than most of Wowcrendor’s work. Instead of a simple dialogue between Billy and the narrator, How to Win at Fishing mimics common television infomercials. Once Billy’s convinced to try fishing, we get an exciting play-by-play of actual in-game fishing action.

Two Bosses Enter: Beauty vs. Zanzil

[hide][/hide]
In [hide]Two Bosses Enter[/hide], WoW Insider’s series of fantasy death matches, the bosses of World of Warcraft face off in the squared circle. Your vote determines who wins and claims the season title.

Wow. Wow. [hide]Last week’s[/hide] Two Bosses Enter matchup was incredibly close. At one point, both competitors were tied, with votes ticking up each side until the final day. When the poll finally closed, Jan’alai took the victory by only three apparently four votes. Four votes. Now, I don’t know what this tells me. People must hate each of these bosses equally. Suffice it to say, this was an awesome matchup that went down to the wire. More excitement like that, please!

This week’s matchup features two bosses that hearken back to the days of vanilla World of Warcraft — the great corehound Beauty and her adorable litter face off against cauldron master Zanzil’s voodoo trickery. Whose cuisine will reign supreme?

Officers’ Quarters: Classic blunders

[hide][/hide]

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes [hide]Officers’ Quarters[/hide], a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of [hide]The Guild Leader’s Handbook[/hide], available now from [hide]No Starch Press[/hide].

Last week, we heard about an incident where a player received a rather [hide]hostile in-game mail[/hide] from an officer after missing a raid following the death of a relative. The issue stemmed from a lack of communication among the guild’s officers.

Along that theme, this week’s email describes a case where lack of communication — and some other [hide]classic blunders[/hide] — escalated into a full-blown drama bomb.

Hey Scott,

So I’m an Officer in a medium sized guild. Our main focus is to simply have fun, help each other out, PVP, raid, and everything else in between. I’ve only recently become an Officer for our guild as decided by other Officers and the Guild Leader.

About a month ago we got a new recruit. Let’s call him Jack. Jack is a personal friend of our guild leader which we thought was awesome. Having at least one person you know in the guild personally has always helped us stay grounded in and out of the game. My girlfriend is a recruit in the guild and one of my best friends is one of the Officers.

So about a week ago, I logged in to see that Jack had mysteriously been ranked up to Officer rank as well. This confused me. I had been in the guild for almost a year before I was even considered for a role of responsibility. I pulled out my phone and texted my Officer buddy, let’s call him Bob, to come over. I explained to him that I didn’t think it was very fair that Jack got to be an Officer when everyone else had to work their way up in the guild. To my surprise, Bob had no idea about Jack’s promotion. There are only 3 people in our guild that can even rank someone up to Officer and that’s our GL, Bob, and another high ranking Officer. Bob proceeded to contact our GL and found out that she had promoted Jack without consulting any of her officers first. Now Bob was pissed.[hide]Continue reading Officers’ Quarters: Classic blunders[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Officers’ Quarters (Guild Leadership)[/hide][hide]Officers’ Quarters: Classic blunders[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST. Drama Mamas: Raid leader woes

[hide]Drama Mamas[/hide] Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas — and just as we don’t want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

WoW is a great place to practice one’s social skills. Too bad that Busybody and Negative Nancy haven’t figured that out yet.

Hello Drama Mamas,

I am GM of a smaller guild with only one progressive raid group on a server ranked near the bottom of the charts so there isn’t a huge player base of good raiders to choose from which makes it so guilds tend to put up with certain personalities if they are good players because there really aren’t any others to replace them. Since the release of cataclysm I have encountered problem after problem with our main 10 man group and have had to find several new people which has been no easy feat so I’m just ready for some stability. The issue now is that I have two personalities that are clashing with the overall flow of the group, the busybody and the negative nancy. Both have been with the group for over a year but as time goes on the issues only seem to get worse.[hide]Continue reading Drama Mamas: Raid leader woes[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Guilds[/hide], [hide]Drama Mamas[/hide][hide]Drama Mamas: Raid leader woes[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST. The Daily Quest: I like gold. Do you like gold?

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

Some of my earliest childhood memories involve this song playing on my mother’s eight-track player. You ever had one of those moments when you listened to a childhood song and then suddenly paid attention the lyrics? It took me nearly 20 years before I realized that song was about marrying a rich guy. Or gambling.

… I guess it wasn’t exactly meant to be one of those role-model-type tunes, was it?

Today we’ve got some posts involving gold making in World of Warcraft, and none of them involve getting hitched to a rich guy — I promise.

[hide]Mountain O’ Gold[/hide] ran some reports on solo Kara runs, which aren’t just fun — they’re [hide]profitable too[/hide]!

[hide]Wragstoriches[/hide] takes a look at Chaos Orbs and exactly how much they [hide]ought to be worth[/hide].

[hide]The Gold Mint[/hide] is beginning to wonder whether patch 4.3 will contain the one thing we haven’t seen in Cataclysm content yet: [hide]epic gems[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.
