Breakfast Topic: Why do you raid?

This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

The way I see it — and bear in mind, my vision isn’t exactly 20/20 — there are two chief motivators for those who raid. The first is a rather simple one — they know the game, and they’re going to play it. As real as Azeroth may seem at times, it is in the end simply a game to be enjoyed at its highest. For many, raiding fulfills that call. The allure of tackling impossible odds with nine or 24 of your friends in a stunning display of coordination is quite powerful and wholly compelling.

Yet on the other front, we have those who (like me) approach raiding not from a gameplay perspective but from a story perspective. Some see raiding as the way to conclude the story that we play through as we quest our way to the max level. After all, only by braving the Firelands is one afforded the opportunity to vanquish Ragnaros for good.

Why do you raid? Do you seek the thrill of downing a boss with your friends? Do you want to finally see that fiery menace destroyed for good? Or perhaps you are drawn by both possibilities — to see the story to its end, and to do so with a group of your friends? Or do you prefer to wash your hands clean of the raiding scene, drawn neither by the cooperative efforts and payoff nor by the allure of the story’s conclusions?

Gold Capped: Selling pets for fun and profit

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Gold Capped[/hide], in which [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide] and Basil «[hide]Euripides[/hide]» Berntsen aim to show you how to make money on the auction house. Feed Fox’s ego by [hide]emailing him[/hide] or tweeting him at [hide]@foxvanallen[/hide].

I will admit, I’m a sucker for collecting in-game pets. Maybe it’s because I like having someone following me around, even when I’m soloing content. Maybe it’s just because of the obsessive-compulsive Pokemon instinct, where I gotta catch em all regardless of the consequences. Maybe it’s just because I like [hide]tiny animals that depend on me[/hide].

I’m far from alone — collecting pets in WoW is serious business. There are [hide]achievements involved[/hide]. Exclusive [hide]bonus pets[/hide]. People have even [hide]created websites[/hide] devoted to the hobby of collecting vanity pets.

People love pets. And people will spend lots of money on the things they love, which makes making, buying, and reselling pets a very profitable endeavor indeed.[hide]Continue reading Gold Capped: Selling pets for fun and profit[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Economy[/hide], [hide]Gold Capped[/hide][hide]Gold Capped: Selling pets for fun and profit[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 09:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Death without dignity

[hide][/hide]
After an unexpected lava death on phase 2 of Nefarian, [hide]Vuviel[/hide] of [hide]Dramagods[/hide] on Burning Legion (EU-A) discovered her horrible, smiling skull-mask corpse somehow survived being dunked in lava with zero cosmetic damage. Even her dress was intact. I feel like if you fall in the red-hot magma, your clothes should at least get singed to an Undead-style degree.

The Queue: Narcissism begins

[hide][/hide]
Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. [hide]Alex Ziebart[/hide] will be your host today.

The next few editions of The Queue written by yours truly (generally Mondays and Wednesdays) will come packaged with a very special gift: narcissism. A few readers came through on my spur-of-the-moment art request, so why not show them off, eh? Today’s header image (which, as you now notice, is clickable) is drawn by Matt Krotzer, who you may or may not have seen in the comments before. He’s kind of shy. Doesn’t talk a whole lot, you know?

Andrew R. asked:

Do you think Blizzard will raise the level cap for guilds in the next expansion or just add more rewards tied to achievements?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Narcissism begins[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Narcissism begins[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: One More Soul

We take another tour toward something different today with this music video for [hide]One More Soul[/hide]. Created by Karash, the music is actually from the Silent Hill: Homecoming OST. The creator recognized the theme of the song could reflect the undead from WoW and created this video. The song makes an appropriate dirge from Sylvanas on behalf of her people.

Karash did a great job with this video. It sports plenty of ambiance and moody scenes. I love any movie where dozens of Undead are rocking out, and One More Soul has plenty of those gothic-themed shenanigans. I hope Karash keeps creating WoW movies. This one showed plenty of promise, and I’d like to see what might come in the future.

First chapter of new Wolfheart novel free to read

[hide][/hide]
The Sept. 13 publication date of [hide]Wolfheart[/hide], the newest WoW novel written by Richard Knaak, draws ever closer. We know surprisingly little about it at the moment. We know that it will take place on Kalimdor but will focus on [hide]King Varian Wrynn[/hide] and his relationship with the wolf spirit [hide]Goldrinn[/hide] and the new members of the Alliance, [hide]the Worgen[/hide]. If you’re eager for more information though, you’re in luck. Shelfari, a book wiki run by Amazon.com, has the [hide]first chapter of the book [/hide]available to read.

Click here for your [hide]free sample chapter[/hide] and choose the Read First Chapter Free button below the picture of the book cover on the left side of the page. You’ll be able to read the first chapter, as well as the chapter titles for the book (by pushing the back arrow on the pages). There are going to be a lot of spoilers in both the chapter names and the chapter itself, of course, so read at your own risk. For a quick (spoiler-filled) summary and a discussion of the possibilities, check after the break.[hide]Continue reading First chapter of new Wolfheart novel free to read[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide], [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Worgen[/hide][hide]First chapter of new Wolfheart novel free to read[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 09:00:00 EST. Around Azeroth: Nothing left for me to do but dance

[hide][/hide]
«What better place for a hearty round of ‘let’s go down to the disco’ after a long, discouraging night of raiding then the tallest tower in Dalaran?» writes [hide]Gwendyl[/hide] of [hide]Deeps More Deeping[/hide] on Smolderthorn (US-H). «It may be a ghost town these days, but at least nobody will notice when you accidentally disco off the edge.»

The Queue: Syrio lives

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky, senior editor at WoW Insider, will be your host today.

I hope everyone in the States had a good long weekend. I enjoyed myself — some Minnesota State Fair food and fun, along with a lot of other festivities.

Time for more WoW now, though … need to farm more honor.

WoW Moviewatch: Hiszi, Chapter 1

This movie is a little different from what we normally cover on Moviewatch, although it includes a familiar face. This movie is a PVP and leveling diary created by [hide]Kidsake[/hide], whose videos like [hide]A Westfall Drama[/hide] and [hide]God’s Gonna Cut You Down[/hide] are already fairly popular around here.

[hide]Hiszi, Chapter 1[/hide] isn’t very long, clocking in only a little over 3 minutes. While I’m normally not enamored of video diaries, especially of gameplay, Kidsake did a pretty good job of capturing my attention and keeping it. I think it might be the somewhat surreal opening or the awesome background music.

Like I said, this video is definitely a little different from what we do around here, but it’s worth checking out
