The Queue: The life of Deathwing

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky, senior editor at WoW Insider and cofounder of a [hide]new mobile gaming site[/hide], will be your host today.

Some things in WoW are bad

Legendaries can really make you mad

Those rogues just make you swear and curse.

When you’re hitting on Deathwing’s plate

Don’t grumble, give a whistle

And this’ll help things turn out for the best …

And … always stay on the right side of Deathwing …

Always look on the left side of the gunship …

And … scene!

DarkFinch asked:

Out of pure curiosity, can the Queue give an example of when datamining ’caused problems?'[hide]Continue reading The Queue: The life of Deathwing[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: The life of Deathwing[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 11:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: How to Win at Brewfest

You know what today is. I know what today is. Even Billy knows what today is. Today is the first day of [hide]Brewfest[/hide], the finest holiday in all of Azeroth. Now is the time when we slap on some funny-looking pants, snatch up some sausage, and enjoy the Light’s most glorious bounty … beer!

[hide]How to Win at Brewfest[/hide] is actually a year old; Wowcrendor created it for last year’s holiday. And while you all know I’m a Wowcrendor fan, I have to disagree with him about Brewfest. I really love me some Brewfest, and I look forward to it all year. Of course, that could be because I do the montage scene, just like Billy. My wife finds it terribly embarrassing.

Patch 4.3: Rogue tier 13 is «Bat»man-inspired

Tier 13 continues to be one of the [hide]most intriguing raid tiers[/hide] in terms of aesthetic armor sets that Blizzard has ever put out. Every set this tier has been a labor of love based either on some cool story character or a cool idea kicking around inside of the designers’ heads. Rogues will be sporting the new [hide]Blackfang Battleweave[/hide] in the upcoming [hide]patch 4.3[/hide], fusing together concepts of an Azerothian-styled Batman complete with bat shoulders, a cowl, and a nice patterned outfit.

I think this is going to be the most controversial armor set this tier among players, and I do not understand why. Personally, the rogue set just looks cool, no matter what it is based on. Tier 13 is the fantasy tier, as has been mentioned by Blizzard over and over in each of the tier 13 reveals. At this point in the expansion, the designers and artists are having fun making their versions of cool armor and fun ideas that they’ve been kicking around. From [hide]Time Wizards[/hide] and [hide]tentacle faces[/hide] to [hide]Deathwing look-a-likes[/hide] and Azerothian bat men, I think this is one of the most unique tiers yet.

And really, who epitomizes rogues better than the Dark Knight himself?

Blizzard announces first round of Firelands raid hotfixes

Blizzard recently announced that both the normal and heroic mode encounters in the Firelands would be [hide]rebalanced and nerfed[/hide] over the coming weeks to make the raid tier more accessible to many raid groups. The nerfs and changes begin this week, with the first round of nerfs to make the raiding experience a bit less demanding.

Normal difficulty bosses Shannox, Beth’tilac, and Rhyolith took 15% decreases to health and damage, whereas all of the other bosses in Firelands took a 25% hit. Certain trash packs have had their proverbial bite removed, and Alysrazor’s tornadoes will now move more slowly. All adds in these encounters have had their health pools and damage decreased in the same proportions to their corresponding bosses’.

On heroic difficulty, all bosses’ health pools and damage, along with adds’ corresponding health and damage, have been reduced by a blanket 15%, which is a huge nerf for heroic modes. Alysrazor also drops more feathers on both difficulty settings, and her Wings of Flame buff is now a static 30 seconds.

While many players will be upset with these nerfs, I can only imagine the many raid groups that will happily charge forward to finally defeat the encounters that they have been banging their heads against for the better part of the patch. Blizzard has said that there will be more nerfs coming, as this is just the first round, so make use of this time to get as many of the bosses as you can while the getting is hot.[hide]Continue reading Blizzard announces first round of Firelands raid hotfixes[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide][hide]Blizzard announces first round of Firelands raid hotfixes[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Totem Talk: Tier 13 and Patch 4.3 for restoration

[hide][/hide]

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Totem Talk[/hide] for [hide]elemental[/hide], [hide]enhancement[/hide] and [hide]restoration[/hide] shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from [hide]World of Matticus[/hide] and co-host of the [hide]For the Lore[/hide] and [hide]Raid Warning[/hide] podcasts), shows you how.

Last week, we had a chat about [hide]transmogrification and your choices[/hide] as a restoration shaman. We also covered the shamanistic style through the years, covering the various tiers of gear and how they were defined through their art style — strong tones of the elements and classic Warcraft shaman iconography.

This past week, we finally got our first look at the [hide]shaman tier 13 set[/hide]. Opinions have been varied, ranging from love and adoration of the set to outright hatred of it. So I thought this week we could talk a little bit about the shaman tier 13 armor set, as well as speculate as to what we might see this week in the [hide]upcoming patch 4.3 information[/hide] and what it could mean for restoration shaman.[hide]Continue reading Totem Talk: Tier 13 and Patch 4.3 for restoration[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Shaman[/hide], [hide](Shaman) Totem Talk[/hide][hide]Totem Talk: Tier 13 and Patch 4.3 for restoration[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 15:00:00 EST. Patch 4.3: Blizzard’s official preview of the Hour of Twilight heroic dungeon

The last of [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]’s time-traveling dungeons now has a preview available on the official website. The Hour of Twilight takes place in present-day Azeroth, where the Twilight’s Hammer is putting on a full-scale invasion of Dragonblight. Why Dragonblight? Because that is where the ultimate showdown with Deathwing will begin — and the Dragon Soul plays a key part in taking the former Aspect of Earth down.

Included with the preview are some unsettling images of Wyrmrest Temple crawling with the tentacles of Old God minions, as well as some shots of the surrounding areas. There are three bosses mentioned with the preview: Arcurion, a formidable water ascendant who is tasked with killing Thrall; Asria Dawnslayer, a deadly agent of the Twilight’s Hammer; and a third face who should be instantly recognizable to Alliance players. If you want to avoid spoiler content, I’d avoid the preview, but the third boss is a shock for those familiar with him in game so far.

Did we mention [hide]Thrall[/hide]? That’s right, he’s there too, and players must escort him and the Dragon Soul safely to [hide]Wyrmrest Temple[/hide]. I’m having flashbacks to CoT: Durnholde Keep, but they are good flashbacks. From the looks of things, these events tie directly into [hide]Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects[/hide]; those who are wanting to know more about the events in Hour of Twilight should check out that novel.

All in all, it looks like the three dungeons are similar to the last three dungeons of Wrath of the Lich King. They tie into the final raid encounter in a crucial way, and the story is interlocked between all three dungeons. Check out the [hide]official website[/hide] for the full preview, plenty of images, and more boss information.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. Look at what’s ahead: new [hide]item storage options[/hide], [hide]cross-realm raiding[/hide], [hide]cosmetic armor skinning[/hide] and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from [hide]astride his back[/hide]!

Patch 4.3: Zarhym clarifies tier 13 drop methods

[hide][/hide]
One of the most intriguing non-story tidbits to come out of the recent flood of patch 4.3 news is the fact that tier 13 will not be purchasable with valor points. If you want your tier 13 set, you will have to raid for it. Zarhym has clarified [hide]how this will all work[/hide] in a forum post. Here’s the juicy stuff:

All pieces will drop from multi-class set tokens. Ten-man raids will see a slight buff to drop rates to compensate for the lack of purchasable tier pieces.

Valor point gear will feature a wider array of gear for a wider array of slots, meant both for people who are having trouble with token drops and for people who don’t raid at all.

There will be three tier 13 sets for each class: Looking For Raid level, normal level, and heroic level. Each will have a different item level, but you’ll be able to mix and match pieces from all three sets for your set bonuses as needed.

Gold Capped: Warcraft needs a new gold sink, and it needs it yesterday

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Gold Capped[/hide], in which [hide]Fox Van Allen[/hide] and Basil «[hide]Euripides[/hide]» Berntsen aim to show you how to make money on the auction house. Feed Fox’s ego by [hide]emailing him[/hide] or tweeting him at [hide]@foxvanallen[/hide].

Last month in this column, we discussed [hide]in-game inflation[/hide]. Inflation is an inevitability in any economy — a natural (albeit controllable) erosion of the value of money.

Usually, Blizzard falls over itself to do everything it can to promote balance. Are too many people dying to a certain mechanic? Slash the damage that mechanic inflicts by 10%, or change the frequency at which it occurs. Is a certain class struggling in PVP? Boost one of the bursty attacks by 8%. It’s a subtle back and forth that goes on all the time.

With all the emphasis on balance, you’d think that Blizzard would micromanage the in-game economy to the nth degree. This quote (or this paraphrasing) from Lead Designer Tom Chilton from Gamescom stuck out rather prominently in my mind when I read it:

Blizzard Interview at Gamescom

No gold sinks are coming soon because of the large variance in the amount of gold players have.

[hide]source[/hide]

What in the heck are they thinking?[hide]Continue reading Gold Capped: Warcraft needs a new gold sink, and it needs it yesterday[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Economy[/hide], [hide]Cataclysm[/hide], [hide]Gold Capped[/hide][hide]Gold Capped: Warcraft needs a new gold sink, and it needs it yesterday[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:00:00 EST. Patch 4.3: Dragon Soul raid preview

We’ve been hit with a ton of [hide]patch 4.3[/hide] news today, from previews of all of the [hide]new[/hide] [hide]5-man [/hide][hide]content[/hide] to the [hide]new loot distribution[/hide] for tier pieces coming with the next raid encounter. Now, players are given a sneak peek at the raid instance for patch 4.3, Dragon Soul, where heroes from the Alliance and Horde will face off against Deathwing himself.

Three difficulties of Dragon Soul will be available out of the gates, including normal, heroic, and the new Looking For Raid difficulty intended to give players an easier time with casual raiding in a new, less raiding-severe setting. The raid begins at Wyrmrest Temple, where Thrall has successfully delivered the Dragon Soul that was nabbed out from under Malfurion long ago in the Caverns of Time instance The Well of Eternity. The aspects are all there, ready to deal the final blow. First, however, players face off against 6 bosses, and then two encounters against Deathwing.

The first fight is a mighty elemental, Morchok, who attacks Wyrmrest itself. Players then face off against Warlod Zon’ozz, Yor’shaj the Unsleeping, and Hagara the Binder, all minions of the Old Gods assisting Deathwing in his plans to destroy Azeroth. Ultraxion, a dragon of immense dark energy, will attack players on Wyrmrest, followed by an army of Twilight’s Hammer drake riders led by Warmaster Blackhorn. Most interestingly absent is Chromatus, the great 5-headed chromatic dragon who first appeared as an enemy in Christie Golden’s Twilight of the Aspects, and was pegged to be a raid boss in the coming patches.

Finally, players will take the fight to Deathwing himself, landing on his back for the first part of his encounter and then attacking him in his final form on the edges of the Maelstrom. I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am for these final raid encounters from Cataclysm. Way to turn up the epic, Blizzard.
