Breakfast Topic: What will you do after WoW?

[hide][/hide]
This [hide]Breakfast Topic[/hide] has been brought to you by [hide]Seed[/hide], the AOL guest writer program that brings [hide]your words[/hide] to WoW Insider’s pages.

I’m going to ask a question, and you’re not going to like it. In fact, you may want to take a big chug from a pint of Ironforge’s finest first. Go ahead, have a seat; I’ll wait. In fact, I’ll have one of my own.

Ready? Just remember, it’s hypothetical, all right? Okay, here goes: What would you do if WoW shut down tomorrow? Say there were a huge natural disaster (but all the Blizzard employees made it out okay; I’m not cruel) and there was major data corruption and destruction, or perhaps the game just ran its course and is over. Either way, there is no more Azeroth, no servers or realms, no character list, not even a login screen or an annoying dragon roar every minute. What would you do?

Do you have another game to fill your time? If it were sudden and unforeseen, would you be angry about all your lost time and give up games altogether? Would you fill up the void with other technological means, with another hobby, or with family time?

I would probably spend more time writing, and maybe get some of these brainstorms colliding in my head down on paper. There are other games I’ve been putting off so I could concentrate on WoW that I could give a whirl. How would you fill your time?

Around Azeroth: Go away, I’m moping

[hide][/hide]
Ugh. Nothing ruins a good staring into the ocean and brooding session like a big slimy murloc showing up and wanting attention. Now [hide]Viaola[/hide] of [hide]Strike[/hide] on Fenris (US-A) has to get up from her shipwreck and go kill this reptile. (Amphibian? Aquatic mammal? What are murlocs, anyway?) Getting up is so lame. Can’t she just send her rat to do it?

The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons

Welcome back to [hide]The Queue[/hide], the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

Seriously, what happened to the awesome night elves of Warcraft 3? I think all the problems started when night elf males couldn’t have kickin’ wizard beards (a deficit found in nearly all playable non-dwarf races).

Eviljiggy asked:

I want to get the achievement «Stood in the Fire» before it goes away once someone kills Deathwing on my realm, probably in a patch or 2. However, I’m never ever in the right area he barbeques. Is there any Add-on or chat channel or anything of the sort to track what zone he’s in or going to?

Unfortunately, the zone selection appears to be totally random, and there’s not really enough to time to get the zone and in range of his breath to get the achievement if you’re not already in the area.[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons[/hide][hide]The Queue: Burly mountain men and Amazons[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage

Every week, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Arcane Brilliance[/hide] for [hide]arcane[/hide], [hide]fire[/hide] and [hide]frost[/hide] mages. This week, we’re taking a trip through the first 20 levels of the game, which are now eternal. The important thing to remember about rolling a mage is that you’ve made the right choice; congratulations.

Between the newly adopted [hide]unending demo[/hide], the [hide]extended Recruit-a-Friend promotion[/hide], and the freshly bargain-priced WoW/The Burning Crusade bundle, it seems Blizzard is making a concerted effort to woo new players. And from my limited viewpoint, it seems to be working.

I have a brother, a year and some change younger than me, who doesn’t live near me. This sucks, because he and I have absolutely everything in common. We grew up taking turns watching each other play Shining Force, or designing Dungeons & Dragons campaigns to force each other to play through, but then college, family, and career separated us. I’m here in Las Vegas playing copious amounts of video games and ignoring my kids, and he’s at Purdue, working on his doctorate and just generally making me ashamed of the waste my life has become. Naturally, I’ve been trying for years to drag him down to my level. Thus far he’s resisted, but when I notified him of these new opportunities to play the game on the cheap, he finally took the plunge.

And rolled a warrior.

Sigh.

Oh well. At least it wasn’t a warlock, right?[hide]Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Mage[/hide], [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide](Mage) Arcane Brilliance[/hide][hide]Arcane Brilliance: Beginner’s guide to being a mage[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. WRUP: March 24, 1984

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, «What are you playing this week?» — otherwise known as: [hide]WRUP[/hide]. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

Dear Mr. O’Halloran,

I accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in Blogsmith for whatever it was that I did wrong … and what I did — volunteer to write WRUP — was wrong. But I think you’re crazy to make me write this post telling you who I think I am, or detail how far everyone has progressed into the Firelands.

What do you care?

You see us as you want to see us… in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions. You see us as a boomkin, a paladin, a shadow priest, a healer, and a McCurley. Correct? That’s the way we saw each other at seven o’clock this morning.

We were brainwashed.[hide]Continue reading WRUP: March 24, 1984[/hide]Filed under: [hide]WoW Insider Business[/hide][hide]WRUP: March 24, 1984[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Sat, 09 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. WoW Armory now displaying mounts and pets

The [hide]World of Warcraft Armory/community site[/hide] has [hide]been updated[/hide] with a useful new feature showing players the mounts and companion pets they have collected so far. You’ll be able to see where each pet or mount comes from or who drops them, a picture of each, and even a listing of not-yet-collected pets and mounts, making it easier to be an achievement hunter or collector.

The armory has changed drastically from its original interpretation and implementation, adding features over time that give players a more cohesive out-of-game experience. What is most interesting are the potential tie-ins later on with the [hide]previously announced WoW APIs[/hide] coming down the pipe in the near future; we are still unsure of the amount of data that developers will be able to access from the WoW armory. I would not be surprised to see collected pet and mount data also being part of that package.

We’ve got a pretty full-featured armory at this point. What other types of data do you think the armory could or should provide? Perhaps next we’ll see a tabard and title tab, showing players’ collected tabards and a scroll list of titles earned. The sky is the limit, apparently.[hide]Continue reading WoW Armory now displaying mounts and pets[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Blizzard[/hide][hide]WoW Armory now displaying mounts and pets[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST.

Ready Check: WoW Insider’s guide to Shannox

[hide]Ready Check[/hide] helps you prepare yourself and your raid for the bosses that simply require killing. Check back with Ready Check each week for the latest pointers on killing adds, not standing in fire, and hoping for loot that won’t drop.

Shannox is the leader of the Flamewalker hunters and generally the first boss that players tangle with in Firelands. He comes complete with his two pets, Riplimb and Rageface, all of which have to be fought at the same time. Shannox is different than most bosses in that he isn’t initially in the dungeon; you must first clear a fairly hefty amount of trash in order to force him to spawn.

Also unlike other boss encounters, he does not have a set location where you can fight him. Instead, he pads around the pathway that circles around the entire opening portion of the zone. He will always spawn at Baleroc’s gate in the back center of the room and from there circle counterclockwise.

Think your raid is ready to take on the best hunter in the Firelands?[hide]Continue reading Ready Check: WoW Insider’s guide to Shannox[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Raiding[/hide], [hide]Ready Check (Raiding)[/hide][hide]Ready Check: WoW Insider’s guide to Shannox[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. Drama Mamas: Confessions of a drama queen

[hide]Drama Mamas[/hide] Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas — and just as we don’t want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

People are people — even former drama queens.

When I started MMO gaming, there really weren’t a lot of girls playing. In my first game, I was the only girl in our large guild system for a very long time. I totally milked that, too-I’d get free things and was consistently supported by guys going out of their way for me. I discovered very quickly that I really liked the attention. I’m ashamed to say I was very much «that girl» who would send nude photos to some guys in exchange for favors, and I’m not sure how much worse a person could really get.

This behavior went on through multiple games; I liked being the «darling» of the group. And oh, the catfights that would ensue if another girl encroached on my territory…[hide]Continue reading Drama Mamas: Confessions of a drama queen[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Drama Mamas[/hide][hide]Drama Mamas: Confessions of a drama queen[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST.
