The Daily Quest: Cha-ching!

WoW Insider’s on a [hide]Daily Quest[/hide] to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

So, did you hear the latest about Diablo 3? Apparently, Blizzard’s going to allow players to purchase items on the auction house for [hide]real-life currency[/hide]. I am eagerly awaiting the day when my Diablo-obsessed friend puts his first collection of items up on the auction house and waits for the cash to roll in. Mostly to see the look on his face when he realizes everyone else playing the game is doing the exact same thing and remembers the basic rules of supply and demand.

Of course, the blogosphere is pretty chatty about this topic, so let’s take a look at some posts!

[hide]The Grumpy Elf[/hide] thinks this feature will eventually make its way to WoW and shares [hide]some reasons why[/hide].

[hide]Stabbed Up[/hide] stands up and asks who wants to be a [hide]professional gamer[/hide]?

[hide]Welcome to Spinksville[/hide] shares some thoughts on the [hide]upcoming Diablocalypse[/hide].

[hide]Procrastination Amplification[/hide] wonders what this will do to the [hide]psyche of players[/hide].

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our [hide]WoW Resources Guide[/hide] for more WoW-related sites.

The Classifieds: Celebrating world PVP

[hide]The Classifieds[/hide] brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness shout-outs to players who make your WoW sessions memorable.

Ahn’Qiraj: The Fallen Kingdom is a player-run event on Emerald Dream (US) to promote the idea of world PVP. It takes place on Aug 13 at 7 p.m. server time. If you’re not familiar with the term, essentially world PVP harkens back to the days when we didn’t have battlegrounds, arenas, or other fishbowl player-versus-player contests — just simple, random open warfare in the middle of the PVE zones. You can find out more about this event in the [hide]official forums[/hide]; this group is definitely hoping for a big turn-out.

In a whole different kind of news, Xander and Airielle of [hide]Pendragon[/hide] (Proudmoore US-A) put together this cover of [hide]Part of Your World[/hide] called [hide]Part of Your Raid[/hide]. Xander wrote the lyrics while Airielle performed it.[hide]Continue reading The Classifieds: Celebrating world PVP[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Classifieds[/hide][hide]The Classifieds: Celebrating world PVP[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Cenarion Hatchling raises over $1.9 million for Japan Earthquake Relief

Here’s some wonderful news for the WoW community — Blizzard’s [hide]recent charity drive[/hide] to help those in need after the recent devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan has [hide]raised over $1.9 million[/hide] for the American Red Cross efforts. At $10 per pet and 100% of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross, that’s over 190,000 pet purchases since the pet went on sale in May. Good job, WoW community!

The Cenarion Hatchling is still up on the Blizzard store, so if you missed your chance to purchase the little guy for charity, you’ll still be able to pick him up, as he is a permanent part of the store from here on out. Feel good about this one — that’s a lot of money going to people in need.

Know Your Lore: The humans, part 3

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, [hide]Matthew Rossi [/hide]and [hide]Anne Stickney[/hide] make sure you [hide]Know Your Lore[/hide] by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Imagine for a moment that you are, right now, a human of the same age that you are, but living in Azeroth. Depending how old you are, you either lived through or were born into the aftermath of three of the most devastating wars your world has ever seen. Keeping in mind the trouble with [hide]timelines[/hide], every human alive in the Warcraft setting has endured loss and hardship on a scale almost unimaginable; many were driven from their homes by invading monsters or demons from other worlds, or were forced to flee in advance of legions of walking corpses that relentlessly tried to kill them and dogged their steps all the way to safety.

The humans who congregate today in centers like Stormwind and Theramore have survived when vast numbers of their people died. Only the former high elves have lost more of their kind. The fact that humanity manages to remain a force to be reckoned with despite the loss of almost all of its former northern domains in the Eastern Kingdoms, the deaths of uncounted numbers of their people and the usurpation of their inheritance is a testament to their origin as a seed race of the Titan’s first arrival on Azeroth. Indeed, much like their dwarven cousins (for now humans and dwarves truly know they share a common origin, as do their gnomish relations), humans harbor a stony resolve in the face of adversity that could crush or corrupt another people.

Let us look at humanity’s most recent travails.[hide]Continue reading Know Your Lore: The humans, part 3[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Lore[/hide], [hide]Know your Lore[/hide], [hide]Arts and Crafts[/hide][hide]Know Your Lore: The humans, part 3[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. Ragnaros awakened in Minecraft

Last week in [hide]The Daily Quest[/hide], you may have seen a YouTube video of a [hide]recreation of Darnassus in Minecraft[/hide]. If you thought that was cool, there’s more where that came from. In addition to Darnassus, YouTuber [hide]kattooMC[/hide] and his servermates [hide]resresres1[/hide] and [hide]nessy27[/hide] have also created a scale model of [hide]Deathwing[/hide] (which has made the rounds once before) and, much more recently, Molten Core’s version of Ragnaros.

These Minecraft builds do use game mods or third-party tools, and there are blocks incorporated into the designs that cannot be placed by players (such as the blocks of Coal in Deathwing) — but cool is cool, regardless of how something is made. Many viewers of the Ragnaros video have commented that he looks a bit … green. However, kattooMC assured everyone it was just a result of video encoding. As a Minecraft player myself, I’ll back him up on that. I know what yellow wool blocks look like when I see ’em.

According to kattoo [hide]via Twitter[/hide], Stormwind is next on their Warcraft to-do list. I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

Blizzard registers Mists of Pandaria trademark

[hide]MMO-Champion is reporting[/hide] on a new Blizzard trademark that was just filed for «Mists of Pandaria,» [hide]potentially[/hide] the name of the next World of Warcraft expansion to be announced at [hide]BlizzCon[/hide] this year. This is not the first time Blizzard has filed for a trademark in such a way, as Blizzard [hide]filed for the «Cataclysm» trademark[/hide] back in 2009. While this trademark does not explicitly say that it is the name of the new expansion, the class of trademark does point to its being filed for computer game software and lines up, according to MMO Champion, with other Blizzard trademarks for expansions.

While it is not confirmed that Mists of Pandaria is the next expansion, it very well could be. We don’t exactly know what the next expansion has in store for WoW players, but we are certain to find out at BlizzCon. Mists of Pandaria could be an expansion that opens up many islands still as of yet explored and populated by players on Azeroth and could potentially provide some new land grabs for the Horde and the Alliance to quarrel over after Deathwing’s demise. Whether or not the Pandaren race will be playable is definitely up in the air, but Blizzard has apparently had issues with bringing panda people into the game in the past. Personally, I would much rather prefer another space exploration expansion like The Burning Crusade, as we’ve been on Azeroth for two expansions already, and I think it’s time to head to the stars again.

BlizzCon virtual ticket now on sale

Unable to attend BlizzCon 2011 in the flesh this fall? No problem. The BlizzCon virtual ticket for this year has just gone [hide]on sale for $39.99[/hide]. The virtual ticket provides streaming access to all convention panels, the Saturday night contests and to-be-announced concert, exclusive interviews, and more. Your $39.99 also nets you[hide] the BlizzCon 2011 exclusive pet[/hide]. You and I both know that when it comes down to it, that’s all you really care about.

If you’ve purchased the virtual ticket before and weren’t happy with the product, fear not: The online offerings of the virtual ticket have been much improved over the years. In 2009, the DirecTV coverage was shoddy all around, leaving viewers in the dark about half of the panels of the convention. In 2010, the multichannel coverage of all of the panels, the ability to go back and rewatch panels later or fill in gaps you missed earlier in the weekend, as well as the interviews with Blizzard that you can’t see anywhere else really made your $39.99 worth it. It wasn’t unusual for BlizzCon attendees in Anaheim to watch the panels from the comfort of their hotel rooms via online stream, only venturing out for evening parties and meetups (such as our own!). If you can’t physically attend BlizzCon 2011 (or even if you can), it’s money well spent. Give it another chance.

For the full details of the virtual ticket, head over to [hide]Blizzard’s official blog post[/hide] on Battle.net.
