Today I’m answering a lot of the questions that we got asked over Twitter, in comments, via email, etc. And guess what? They all revolve around patch 4.3, void storage, and transmogrification.

And speaking of that word, it’s now known as transmog or tmog. Alternatively, it could be called talking congas.

Will you be able to transmog weapons?[hide]Continue reading The Queue: Patch 4.3 Q&A — The transmog edition[/hide]Filed under: [hide]The Queue[/hide][hide]The Queue: Patch 4.3 Q&A — The transmog edition[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 11:00:00 EST. WoW Moviewatch: Hard Like Heroic

Work warning: Some adult language and mature scenery in this video. The video is one big innuendo.

It’s been ages since we’ve taken another look a [hide]Hard Like Heroic[/hide] by [hide]Nyhm[/hide]. This video is about four years old but still retains its place as an iconic parody video. For better or for worse, Nyhm was the original belf rapper, even if folks don’t credit him for starting the trend.

Hard Like Heroic has always been my favorite Nyhm parody. The lyrics were fast and clever, without being cruel or overtly vulgar. For all that the song is just one big innuendo, the song feels clever and self-deprecating instead of just funky. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Official Void Storage preview

Blizzard has just released its official preview of the new Void Storage feature coming in patch 4.3. Void Storage is a new long-term bank storage option that will let you save old sets of gear and items that have sentimental value. It is not meant to be a replacement or auxiliary bank; instead, it’s meant to complement the use of transmogrification (see [hide]Blizzard’s official preview[/hide] for more information on that).

In the UI example above, it shows three items being deposited into the Void Bank, costing a total of 300g, or 100g/item. Blizzard notes that the final cost of depositing items is not final.

The big points of Void Storage:

Up to 80 slots

Access by talking to a Vaultkeeper in Stormwind or Orgrimmar

Costs gold each time you deposit or withdraw an item from Void Storage

Deposited items will be stripped of gems, enchants, and reforging

Item restrictions exist (not specified yet)

A new bag, bank, and void storage search field will appear in all inventory windows

Blizzard’s full blue post on Void Storage, after the break.[hide]Continue reading Official Void Storage preview[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Official Void Storage preview[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 12:13:00 EST. Scattered Shots: Hunter reforging priorities

Every Thursday, WoW Insider brings you [hide]Scattered Shots[/hide] for [hide]beast mastery[/hide], [hide]marksmanship[/hide] and [hide]survival[/hide] hunters. Frostheim of [hide]Warcraft Hunters Union[/hide] and the [hide]WoW Hunter Podcast[/hide] uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to [hide]Frostheim[/hide].

One of the most common questions asked by hunter is, «How should I reforge my gear?» Reforging is an elusive mystery, and if you listen to a lot of forum comments, you could quickly believe that reforging is the secret key to real ultimate DPS — if you’re not topping the charts, just reforge better to get those last few thousand DPS going your way. On top of that, we have tons of reforging tools available online, often offering contradictory reforging advice.

Happily, reforging is not nearly as complicated as it seems. Today we’re going to go over reforging advice for your BM, MM, and SV hunters. I’m going to be giving you my thoughts and research conclusions but also the point of view of some other top theorycrafters. We recently did a Hunting Party Podcast all about stats and theorycrafting with Zeherah from [hide]Female Dwarf[/hide] and Revulva from [hide]Ask Mr. Robot[/hide]. Sadly, unforeseen technical difficulties prevented us from recording the show (we turned on the recording for the sound check, then hit record when it was time to go live, accidentally turning it off — oops), but the gist of their advice will be included here.

Join me after the cut for everything you really need to know about reforging hunter gear.[hide]Continue reading Scattered Shots: Hunter reforging priorities[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Hunter[/hide], [hide](Hunter) Scattered Shots[/hide][hide]Scattered Shots: Hunter reforging priorities[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. The Overachiever: You can’t get there from here

Every Thursday, [hide]The Overachiever[/hide] shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, we write a somewhat pointless column.

I went back and forth over the idea of running an Overachiever on vanished mounts. Really, what’s the point? You can’t get them anymore, so what’s the purpose of running a column on stuff you can’t get? But then I thought, it’s not like these mounts don’t count toward [hide]Mountain O’ Mounts[/hide], and odds are pretty good that a sizable percentage of the reading audience will have at least one.

Some of the «disappearing mounts» in WoW disappeared for good reasons. Others were cut for kind of strange reasons.[hide]Continue reading The Overachiever: You can’t get there from here[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide], [hide]Achievements[/hide], [hide]The Overachiever[/hide][hide]The Overachiever: You can’t get there from here[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. More details emerge on Void Storage — 80 slots of space

More details are emerging from Blizzard’s recent talk at Gamescom. [hide]Kotaku sat down[/hide] with Blizzard’s Chris Metzen and Tom Chilton to talk about it all, and one of the things they covered was the upcoming void storage, slated to be released in patch 4.3.

The details on the new void storage are as follows:

80 slots to store items

All items put in void storage will have the following removed from them:

Enchants

Gems

Name of player who crafted the item

Kotaku’s article doesn’t list what exactly are the item restrictions in the void storage. It does say «extra items,» which could lead one to believe there are no restrictions. However, in the past Blizzard has said it wants to do a gear-only storage for older gear sets, so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise if there are some item restrictions in place. We’ll be finding out about that as patch 4.3 is released on the PTR (eventually).

The full bit from Kotaku’s interview with Chris Metzen and Tom Chilton is as follows:

Another addition coming with the patch is «Void Storage», a new 100 to 150 [See Editor’s Note] items slots. Like transmogrification, void storage comes from the Ethereals. Void storage is a pocket dimension created for a player that allows them to store extra items, but there is a downside.

Anything stored in the void is stripped of its enchantments and gems and the name of the person who crafted it, Chilton said. The stripping isn’t tied to the lore of the game, either, but is the byproduct of a technical issue that makes this new storage system possible. (Read: Silly databases!)

Editor’s Note: Blizzard has sent word that it’s actually 80 slots in the Void Storage, not 100 to 150 as originally reported at Kotaku.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. Look at what’s ahead: new [hide]item storage options[/hide], [hide]cross-realm raiding[/hide], [hide]cosmetic armor skinning[/hide] and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from [hide]astride his back[/hide]!

WoW Moviewatch: A Westfall Drama

After looking at [hide]Heroes[/hide] by [hide]Kidsake[/hide] last week, I wanted to take another pass at [hide]A Westfall Drama[/hide]. The video enjoys a lot of the same mystique, but A Westfall Drama manages to capture a sense of loss, misery, and grief.

The music is Goddamn You, Jim by the Felice Brothers. I hadn’t been aware of the song until I heard it in this video, and my hat’s off to Kidsake for using such original music. The poetry of the lyrics and haunting voice supplements the video very well, matching both the tone and ponderous narration.

Kidsake really does amazing work. It’s worth the wait between each of his videos, but I can’t help but to hope for more.

Official Transmogrification preview

Blizzard has released its [hide]official Transmogrification preview[/hide] for the upcoming [hide]patch 4.3[/hide]. The preview basically covers everything that we already know (plus a few new details) from an official Blizzard source:

You can make one piece of armor look like another piece from the same slot.

You will be able to change the looks of weapons, guns, and shields.

There are restrictions (plate can only look like plate, cloth like cloth, etc.).

You’ll be able to see a preview of the transmogrification before it happens.

It’s going to cost some gold. In the preview picture, it’s over 100g.

You can undo it, just like you do with reforging.

It doesn’t appear that an item will be destroyed in the process, but it does appear that you’ll need to have the item you want your current gear to look like in your inventory.

The devil will be in the details here, and the only way we’ll get those details is to get on the patch 4.3 PTR … which can’t come soon[TM] enough.

Blizzard’s full statement after the break.[hide]Continue reading Official Transmogrification preview[/hide]Filed under: [hide]News items[/hide][hide]Official Transmogrification preview[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:25:00 EST. Transmogrification and the dismissal of the silhouette theory

Blizzard [hide]recently announced[/hide] at the Gamescom gaming convention in Germany that patch 4.3 is coming, and it’s coming on strong. With brand new features like a separate bank for your old gear, a transmogrification NPC who can change the look of your gear, and even Deathwing himself as a raid, patch 4.3 opens up a ton of possibilities for the future of World of Warcraft that we might not have seen coming.

For me, the most stark change that patch 4.3 is bringing about is not a change to the systems or gameplay, but a philosophical change at the heart of World of Warcraft that spells out some of the potential big announcements that might be coming our way during BlizzCon.

Transmogrification is bigger as a philosophical leap than we think, and here’s how.

The silhouette theory

World of Warcraft’s factions are rooted in an idea called silhouette recognition. What this means is that you can easily tell who your friends or enemies are based on their aesthetic look. The reason there are no «humans» on the Horde side is because Blizzard wants you, as a Horde player, to point out a human on the battlefield. The same goes for every race. No two sides have races that feature identical silhouettes. This is even the reason worgen are forced into their bestial forms in combat — players need to know that you’re a worgen.

This goes for gear as well. Blizzard practically invented the gear tier system in raiding and made it so your two most prominent pieces, shoulders and headpieces, were the sought-after marks of power and prestige, and a physical reminder of player accomplishment. My shoulders currently tell you that I’ve been to the Firelands, killed many bosses, and taken their stuff. My silhouette is instantly recognizable as a raider who is geared and powerful.[hide]Continue reading Transmogrification and the dismissal of the silhouette theory[/hide]Filed under: [hide]Analysis / Opinion[/hide][hide]Transmogrification and the dismissal of the silhouette theory[/hide] originally appeared on [hide]WoW Insider[/hide] on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST.
